An internatinal team led by researchers frm the University f Adelaide and the University f Cpenhagen recnstructed an 11,700-year eclgical baseline fr bwhead whales, which are a threatened Arctic native species.
Using cmputer mdels, fssils, and hunting recrds, the team mapped the lcatin and size f suitable summer fraging habitat (觅食栖息地) fr bwhead whales, finding that until recently it had remained nearly unchanged. Hwever, they predict (预测) that future climate change will destry 65—75 percent f this fraging habitat by the end f the 21st century. In the Sea f Okhtsk, which is hme t ne f nly fur ppulatins f bwhead whales, usable summer habitat is likely t vanish entirely by 2060.
The reasn fr the reductin is the breakup f a clse relatinship between bwhead whales and summer sea ice cver. “Bwhead whales have preferred t frage amng sea ice fr thusands f years,” said lead authr Nichlas Freymueller. “Hwever, Arctic sea ice has becme less in recent decades, and this is set t be wrse in cming decades, causing where bwhead whales currently gather in large numbers t be lst.”
