Fr ur glbal prject, we wanted t d ne f their vlunteer trips in anther cuntry. Of curse, this sunded like a great pprtunity and we were ready t jump n it, but nne f us were unaware f the term “vlunturism". This is when peple travel t develping cuntries t vlunteer, but in reality, they just make things wrse than they riginally were. This was definitely smething we wanted t avid, s we did a lt f research int the credibility f this prgram.
After research, we fund it very credible and really liked the idea behind their prjects, which was t give “hand ups”instead f “handuts". This means that they wrk t help the lcal peple learn t maintain the wrk that they help start rather than just setting prjects up and then leaving them behind.
When we arrived in Ecuadr, we wrked alngside cmmunity members t dig ut ld pipes n the tp f a muntain that led t the twn and gave them access t running water. Digging ut pipes at such a high altitude was definitely a challenge, but being able t wrk alngside great peple while ding it made it s much better. What’s mre, my perspective has widened and nw I lk frward t a time when I can d smething like this again.

A system f canals (运河) used t direct and catch fish was fund in Belize establishing “cntinuity” between the Mayans and a predecessr (前一代) as they cntinued t use them. First believed t have been a Mayan cnstructin, after running numerus radicarbn dates, researchers frm the University f New Hampshire(UNH) made a discvery that these fish-trapping canals were cnstructed befre the pwerful Mayan civilizatin.
The netwrk directed the annual fld waters int a surce pl where they culd trap thusands f fish, which were able t feed a grwing ppulatin. It has been estimated that the Mayan ppulatin numbered eight millin. “It seems likely that the canals allwed fr annual fish harvests and scial meetings, which wuld have encuraged peple t return t this area year after year and stay fr lnger perids f time,” said Marieka Bruwer Burg, prfessr at the University f Vermnt.
In the largest inland wetland in Belize, Central America, New Hampshire researchers cnducted tests n a large-scale pre-Clumbian fish-trapping facility. At first, they never expected that anyne but the Mayans culd have cnstructed such a cmplex means f catching fish. Yet, the presence f the canals extended ver a thusand years in the past, befre the Mayans began t appear, which “surprised” researchers due t its massive size.
“In general, we tend t regard agricultural prductin as the engine f civilizatin, but this study tells us that it wasn't just agriculture,” accrding t Eleanr Harrisn-Buck, directr f the Belize River East Archaelgy prject. Cllecting samples alng the walls, the researchers investigated carbn levels t determine “envirnmental changes ver time”. With n evidence f crp prductin in sight, they cncluded that these channels served as large-scale fish-trapping facilities.
“Such intensive investments in fishery shw ancient fishers knew hw t prtect their resurces and use them in a way that culd sustain these habitats,” Samantha, prfessr f gegraphy at Texas State University, explained. “Knwing hw t use canal resurces respnsibly is essential fr the cntinued availability f these resurces bth in the past and tday.”
28. What did the researchers frm the UNH find?
A. A fish-trapping skill is kept till tday.
B. Mayan civilizatin hlds great mysteries.

Orb-weaver spiders (圆网蜘蛛) dn’t have ears, yet they can still “listen”, which may seem unbelievable. Hwever, in 2022, a research team led by mechanical engineer Rn Miles at Binghamtn University discvered that spider silk functins as a highly sensitive listening device, capable f detecting sunds frm up t ten feet away.
Human hearing is based n air pressure changes in ur ears. When pressure shifts, ur eardrums vibrate at different frequencies, sending electrical signals t the brain t identify sunds. “Micrphnes were designed t cpy this prcess, but t make micrphnes mre pwerful and sensitive, they need t be larger, which ges against the desire fr easy-t-take technlgy. Humans just mdeled micrphnes after ur wn ears, but that’s nt always the best apprach; spiders might ffer a better slutin,” says Miles in an interview.
Spiderwebs are less affected by changes in air pressure. Instead, they vibrate in the airflw created by a sund wave, allwing spiders t “hear” by feeling that mtin — and even judge the directin f the nise. After testing the sensitivity f spider webs frm the Binghamtn University campus, Miles and his clleague fund that spider silk can register sunds ranging frm 1 hertz t 50 kilhertz — mre than the human hearing range f 20 hertz t 20 kilhertz.
Inspired by these findings, Miles, alng with pstdctral researcher Junpeng Lai, has develped a micrphne. Instead f using actual spider silk, the device emplys silicn (硅) t detect airflw changes. “Because spider silk is, f curse, created by spiders, it is unfeasible t apply it t the billins f micrphnes that are made each year,” Miles says. “It des, hwever, teach us a lt abut what mechanical features are desirable in a micrphne.”
Miles and thers are wrking t develp new instruments that can register extremely quiet sunds sent by the human ear, which might help detect and treat hearing prblems in babies, reprts The New Yrk Times. Besides, accrding t the reprt, spider silk-inspired sund systems may enable researchers t pick up n ther sunds utside the human ear’s range — such as lw-frequency nises, which scientists can use t predict and track the strms.
32. What did the 2022 research fcus n?
A. Spiders’ silk-prducing ability.B. Spiders’ listening device.
C. Spiders’ sensitivity t the envirnment.D. Spiders’ sund-prducing mechanisms.
33. What feature might Miles expect micrphnes t have?
A. Being ear-like and adaptable.B. Being flexible and adjustable.
C. Being tiny yet well-perfrming.D. Being light yet widely available.
34. What des the underlined wrd “unfeasible” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Unnecessary.B. Flexible.C. Effective.D. Unrealistic.
35. What des the reprt in The New Yrk Times mainly want t shw?
A. The practical inspiratin f spider silk.B. Spiders’ ability t detect disasters.
C. Spider silk’s side effects in treating hearing.D. The similarities f human and spider hearing.
