Mlecules in bld and urine may reveal hw much energy a persn cnsumes frm ultra-prcessed fds, accrding t a new study.
It’s the first time that scientists have identified bilgical markers that can indicate higher r lwer intake f the fds, which are linked t a number f health prblems, said Erikka Lftfield, a US Natinal Cancer Institute researcher wh led the study.
She said it culd help us t understand mre abut the impact f these prducts n ur health. Ultra-prcessed fds — like sugary cereals, sdas, chips, frzen pizzas and mre — are prducts created thrugh industrial prcesses with ingredients such as additives, clrs and preservatives nt fund in hme kitchens.
Hwever, studying their health impacts is hard because it’s difficult t accurately track what peple eat. Typical diet studies rely n asking peple what they ate during a certain perid. But such reprts are knwn t be unreliable because peple dn’t remember everything they ate, r they dn’t recrd their diets accurately.
In this study, Lftfield and her clleagues examined existing data f mre than 1,000 lder US adults. Mre than 700 f them had prvided bld and urine samples, as well as detailed dietary recall reprts, cllected ver a year.
The scientists fund that hundreds f metablites — prducts f digestin and ther prcesses — crrespnded t the percentage f energy a persn cnsumes frm ultra-prcessed fds. Frm thse, they devised a system using 28 bld markers and up t 33 urine markers that reliably predicted ultra-prcessed fd intake in peple cnsuming typical diets.
It’s still early research, but identifying bld and urine markers t predict cnsumptin f ultra-prcessed fds is “a majr scientific advance,” said Dr. Dariush Mzaffarian frm Tufts University, wh was nt invlved in the study. Lftfield said she hped t apply the tl t existing studies where bld and urine samples are available t track, fr instance, the effect f cnsuming ultra-prcessed fds n cancer risk.
Hwever, at a time when supprt fr gvernment research is being cut, funding remains uncertain.
28. Hw did the researchers cnduct their study?
A. By testing new fd additives in labratries.
B. By interviewing peple abut their eating habits.
C. By analyzing bld and urine samples with dietary data.
D. By cmparing hme-cked meals with prcessed fds.
29. The wrd “metablites” in paragraph 6 mst likely refers t _________.
A. artificial fd clrs.B. kitchen cking ingredients.
C. substances frm bdily prcesses.D. industrial additives in prcessed fds.
30. What is Dr. Dariush Mzaffarian’s attitude tward the new methd?
A. Skeptical.B. Favrable.C. Indifferent.D. Critical.
31. What is the authr’s primary purpse in writing this passage?
A. T criticize the fd industry’s use f additives.
B. T prmte gvernment funding fr cancer research.
C. T cmpare different methds f dietary assessment.
D. T explain a scientific breakthrugh in diet tracking.
【答案】28. C 29. C 30. B 31. D

D
In the early 1960s a grup f psychlgy students at the University f Nrth Dakta were asked t assist with an experiment invlving lab rats. Six f the students were tld that their rats had been bred fr brightness in running the maze, while the ther six students were infrmed that their rats culd be expected fr “genetic reasns” t have limitatins t learning t run the maze. In fact, nne f the rats had been trained t get ut f a maze and had been randmly assigned t either f the tw cages.
Prir t learning the results, I predicted that n differences wuld be fund between the grups in learning t run the maze. It turned ut that my predictive pwers were ntably lacking. But what culd pssibly accunt fr these results? Rbert Rsenthal, a renwned scial psychlgist at Harvard University, explred what specifically was invlved in the different ways in which the tw grups f rats were “handled”.
Rsenthal fund that the students with “brighter rats” ranked their subjects as brighter, mre pleasant, and mre likeable than did the students wh had “duller rats”. They als said they handled their animals mre than the students expecting pr perfrmance did. It’s interesting t think that n sme level, rats nt nly “knew” the students cared abut them by the way they were handled but that this handling imprved their learning t run the maze.
Based n the study, Rsenthal cnducted a test in Spruce Elementary Schl, where teachers were tld there were a grup f students in each class wh were set t “blssm” academically during the new schl year. In fact, this grup f students was randmly selected. A year later, these students’ IQ scres imprved significantly mre than ther students’. He called what had ccurred the Pygmalin Effect — expectatins influencing perfrmance.
The Pygmalin effect is best understd as a reminder t be mindful f the ptential influence f ur expectatins. Having high expectatins in many situatins can inspire thers regarding their wn capabilities. Peple’s limitatins can be stretched if yu change yur perceptin f their limitatins.
32. What can we learn frm the Nrth Dakta study?
A. Genetic factrs played a decisive rle in study utcmes.
B. Students perceived the differences in the rats’ intelligence.
C. There was a difference in maze-running ability between the rats.
D. Students’ expectatins subcnsciusly affected the rats’ perfrmance.
33. What des the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 imply?
A. The authr’s reasning ability is cmparatively weak.
B. The actual results cntradict the authr’s initial predictin.
C. The authr was verly cnfident in his earlier assumptin.
D. The unexpected results result frm the experimental methds.
34. Which example demnstrates the Pygmalin Effect?
A. A cach favrs athletic players in cmpetitins.
B. Students study harder after receiving a lw grade.
C. Emplyees wrk vertime t meet a strict deadline.
D. Managers’ expectatins lead t wrkers’ high prductivity.
35. What is the suitable title fr the passage?
A. Pygmalin Effect: Its Practical Applicatins
B. Pygmalin Effect: Belief’s Impact n Learning
C. Pygmalin Effect: Expectatins Affect Outcmes
D. Pygmalin Effect: Reassessing Our Expectatins
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. D 35. C
