My tenth-grade chemistry teacher culd tell that I wasn’t the next Mendeleev. Early in the year, he gave us tugh exams, warning that students wh struggled shuld recnsider staying in the advanced-level class. I’d never excelled in science, s I determined that if I culd nt get an A n the next assignment, I wuld drp dwn a level. Befre returning the assignment, he asked if anyne was taking the new Chinese class. I raised my hand hesitantly.
I gt an A n the assignment, and my chemistry teacher had written what lked like tw Chinese characters n the label f the flder. When I asked him what they meant, he explained they frmed the Chinese characters fr “chemistry”.
He used t tell us, with a twinkle in his eye, that chemistry was the mst imprtant subject, fllwed by math, with the humanities (such as histry, literature, and philsphy) cming last. Hwever, he smetimes brught Chinese trinkets (小件饰物) and shwed us vides abut Chinese culture. It seemed that in practice, he didn’t fllw his wn ranking system.
My father, an engineer, viewed math and sciences as superir t the humanities, which made me decide t prve that the humanities were better. My chemistry teacher, thugh paying lip service t the same ideas as my father, freely mixed cultural studies, literature recmmendatins, and family tips int ur classes. He als invited teachers frm China t tell us what schls were like there. These experiences didn’t distract me frm chemistry, but rather enhanced it, helping me understand hw it wrked and why it mattered.
It turned ut that I was indeed n Mendeleev. I didn’t majr in chemistry, but I gt a PhD in Chinese literature. Nw, I may nt be teaching chemistry, but the curisity, penness, and crss-disciplinary thinking my chemistry teacher instilled in me are at the heart f what I d.

Kelp frests are diverse underwater ecsystems stretching alng castlines wrldwide. They prvide hmes fr marine wildlife, rank amng Earth’s mst prductive habitats, capture carbn efficiently, and prtect casts frm ersin (侵蚀). These “lungs f the cean” play a vital rle in maintaining marine health.
In recent years, hwever, kelp frests n Nrth America’s west cast have declined due t threats like marine heatwaves — extended perids f abnrmally warm cean water linked t climate change. Using 40 years f satellite data, researchers frm the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles (UCLA) studied hw Marine prtected Areas (MPAs) affect kelp recvery alng Califrnia’s cast. Their findings shwed that kelp frests within MPAs recvered mre quickly after heatwaves. “MPA-prtected kelp bunced back better than prtected areas after majr climate disturbances,” nted lead authr Emelly Ortiz-Villa. She added that restricted fishing znes prtecting predatrs (捕食者) like lbsters saw strnger regrwth, suggesting MPAs bst ecsystem resilience (恢复力) t climate events.
MPAs are cean areas where human activities are limited t supprt ecsystems and species living there. But prtectin levels vary greatly: sme are “n-take” znes with strict rules, while thers have lse restrictins r pr management. Prfessr Rick Staffrd frm the British Eclgical Sciety emphasized, “UCLA’s research prves lcal prtectin helps cunter glbal threats like climate change. Given the widespread lss f marine ecsystems, such effective lcal prtectin mdels shuld be prmted glbally t maximize eclgical benefits. We can’t assume these benefits will cntinue withut cnsistent supprt fr expansin.”
Senir authr Kyle Cavanugh explained, “Our findings can guide where t create new MPAs r ther prtectin measures.” Hwever, the team warned that nt all MPAs perfrmed better than prtected areas, indicating ther factrs influence kelp resilience. They plan t identify these factrs in future research t determine when and where MPAs mst effectively supprt kelp recvery.
      8. What is the main idea f the first paragraph?
      A. Kelp frests’ eclgical significance.
      B. Kelp frests’ urgent need fr prtectin.
      C. Kelp frests’ rle in reducing climate impacts.
      D. Kelp frests’ way f regulating marine temperature.
      9. What did the researchers at UCLA find abut kelp frests?
      A. They captured carbn well in MPAs.
      B. They needed predatrs t recver in MPAs.
      C. They declined mre after marine heatwaves.
      D. They regrew faster in MPAs after heatwaves.
      10. What pint des Prfessr Rick Staffrd emphasize?
      A. MPAs shuld be effectively expanded glbally.
      B. Human activities in MPAs must be banned.
      C. Effective management is key t MPA success.
      D. Climate change makes MPAs less effective.
      11. What will the researchers fcus n next?
      A. Develping new satellite technlgies.
      B. Assessing the effect f MPAs’ management.
      C. Explring ther factrs affecting kelp resilience.
      D. Cmparing kelp in MPAs and prtected areas.

Skltech researchers have develped a mathematical mdel t explre memry functin, with findings published in Scientific Reprts that culd advance rbtics, artificial intelligence (AI), and ur understanding f human memry strage. Ntably, the study suggests an ideal number f senses may exist — indicating that humans’ five traditinal senses might nt be sufficient.
Fllwing an early 20th-century research traditin, the team fcused n mdeling engrams (记忆痕迹), the basic units f memry. An engram is a scattered (分散的) set f neurns acrss different brain regins that activate tgether, each representing a cncept defined by specific features. Fr humans, these features are related t sensry experiences: the cncept f a banana, fr example, includes its lk, smell, taste, and ther sensry traits. In this framewrk, a banana becmes a five-dimensinal bject in the brain’s mental space that hlds all stred memries.
Engrams evlve ver time, becming sharper r mre unclear depending n hw ften they are activated by external sensry input. This prcess mirrrs hw humans learn and frget thrugh interactins with the envirnment. “We have mathematically demnstrated that engrams tend t evlve tward a steady state,” explained study c-authr Prfessr Niklay Brilliantv f Skltech AI. “After sme shrt perid, a ‘mature’ distributin f engrams emerges and cntinues.”
A key discvery came when the team examined the ultimate capacity f cnceptual spaces with different numbers f dimensins. “Smewhat surprisingly, we fund that the number f distinct engrams stred in the steady state is greatest fr a seven-dimensinal cncept space,” Brilliantv nted. This led t the “seven senses claim”: if each dimensin crrespnds t a sense, seven senses wuld maximize memry capacity and deepen verall understanding f the wrld.
Imprtantly, this number is stable — it desn’t rely n the mdel’s specific details. While the cnclusin abut human senses is highly theretical, Brilliantv added that the findings, hwever, are useful fr rbtics and AI thery. Advancing the theretical mdels f memry will be instrumental t gaining new insights int the human mind and creating humanlike memry in AI agents.
      12. Why des the authr mentin the cncept f a banana in paragraph 2?
      A. T shw five sensry frmatins f bananas.
      B. T cmpare different ways f string memries.
      C. T explain hw sensry features frm a cncept.
      D. T shw the five-dimensinal structure f the brain.
      13. What can we learn abut engrams frm paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
      A. Their mature distributin appears fast but lasts shrt.
      B. They get unclear nly with rare internal signal activatin.
      C. A seven-dimensinal space stres the mst distinct engrams.
      D. Their evlutin has n link t human learning and frgetting.
      14. What is Brilliantv’s attitude tward the study’s findings?
      A. Dubtful.B. Optimistic.C. Uncncerned.D. Critical.
      15. What is the main purpse f the passage?
      A. T discuss human senses’ evlutin.
      B. T cmpare different memry strage theries.
      C. T explain hw AI recreatest humanlike memry.
      D. T intrduce a memry mathematical mdel and its findings.

As an authr, I recgnize the need fr an impressive cver. Several years ag, I published Under the Almnd Trees. ____18____ I wanted clr rather than black and white, thugh. I was very happy with the result. Later, thugh, I realized smething was missing. I liked the blue sky, the blssms n the trees, the clr f the fnt, but the feel just didn’t scream, “Pick me up!” ____19____ I remember telling her that I liked the design, but smething was ff. Her resulting design was similar. The almnd trees were still there, as was the hrse and cart. The clrs and fnt were better. It was nthing I culd have described, but the new cver was breathtaking. It was even a finalist in a cver design cmpetitin.
S whether yu are tld t judge a bk by its cver r nt, I knw such judging ccurs. A ptential reader decides whether t pick up a bk r nt based n the cver infrmatin. ____20____
