Sn after Mr. & Mrs. Bacchus started farming their little patch f land, they faced a majr prblem — a plague f birds fed n their precius crps. Then, a man stpped n the rad utside their huse, and asked the cuple if he culd take phtgraphs f the birds n the prperty. Afterwards, he suggested that instead f trying t get rid f the birds, they shuld instead learn t live alngside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was brn.
Tday, the cuple credit this man, the celebrated bird phtgrapher Manu Espinsa, with changing their lives, and helping them persuade thers f the vital imprtance f cnservatin in this regin.
Birding turism is flurishing in Ecuadr, with increasing numbers f specialist tur grups. Ecuadr cntains a variety f ecsystems at differing elevatins, which helps explain why it’s amng the tp 10 cuntries in the wrld fr bird diversity. The cuntry is hme t ver 1,600 bird species — nearly duble the number fund in all f Eurpe — within an area just slightly larger than the UK.
As the business f birding grws, mre and mre farmers are switching their land frm agriculture t bird reserves, benefiting nt just the birds, but the cuntry’s ecnmy t. One ntable example is the Ajila family, wh have devted themselves t preserving the lng-wattled umbrellabird. On his land near Recint, landwner Luis Ajila has switched frm dairy farming t cnservatin, replanting trees and prmting the site t wildlife turists — wrk that he says is a better livelihd than farming.
“Wildlife turism is much mre prfitable than farming, but that wasn’t ur nly mtivatin,” says Luis Jr., Ajila’s sn. “We aimed t prtect nt just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them fr future generatins.”
Since 2005, Angel Paz has transfrmed his frmer dairy farm int a bird reserve. At first, things didn’t g t plan: it tk a mnth fr the first visitr t arrive, and he paid just $10 fr a fur-hur tur. Since then, hwever, thusands f peple have made the pilgrimage. “I have prtected my hme and its birdlife fr almst tw decades, and finally watched the wildlife — and the peple wh visit — flurish,” Angel Paz says.

In February, the CEO f Wendy’s, a ppular American fast-fd chain, said that they wuld start experimenting with dynamic pricing. Fr example, the bacn might cst $7.99 at 7 a.m. when everyne eats breakfast, and $6.99 three hurs later when it’s nt breakfast time, but als nt lunch time either.
“Lad balancing” is a similar cncept in energy and transprtatin. Utilities (公用事业) charge less fr pwer vernight, and transit (运输) agencies charge higher fares during rush hur t encurage users t shift tward ff-peak times, when energy and trains are in less demand. And there is “peak-perid pricing” n ride-hailing (打车) platfrms, which is meant t quickly stimulate mre drivers t start picking up passengers.
In an era befre the Internet, changing prices was cstly, requiring updating signs r applying markdwn stickers by hand. As restaurants, retailers, parking garages, gyms, hair salns became mre autmated, price changes became effrtless even at physical stres. It’s easy t understand why cmpanies want t change prices mre frequently: t make mre mney. But des that mean that as dynamic pricing spreads, prices will be higher n average. Senatr Sherrd Brwn,Demcrat f Ohi, psed the questin t the Federal Reserve chair, Jerme H. Pwell, calling the technique “just anther way fr crpratins t make it harder fr cnsumers t seek ut lwer prices”.
Mr. Pwell respnded that dynamic pricing lwers prices as well as raises them, and the verall impact n price levels isn’t yet knwn. When ne cmpany dminates the market, dynamic pricing is mre likely t raise prices verall. But in a cmpetitive envirnment, dynamic pricing can als lead t price wars that benefit cnsumers.
8. Which f the fllwing situatins belngs t “dynamic pricing”?
A. Lwer ticket prices n weekdays.B. Lwer rm prices fr advance bking.
C. Higher fd prices fr nn-members.D. Higher prducts prices fr large amunts.

A. Supprtive.B. Critical.C. Objective.D. Indifferent.
11. Which is the best title fr the text?
A Histry f Fd price Plicies.B. Innvatins n Fast Fd Menus.
C. Great Influence f Dynamic Pricing.D. Dynamic Pricing in Mdern Ecnmy.

A recent survey fund children wuld rather be nline influencers (网红) than astrnauts. It made headlines and led t plenty f cmplaints abut “kids these days”. Is influencing a prmising career path? The lifestyles we see advertised n scial media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain incme, pay inequality, disability and mental health issues.
Successful influencers will be the first t claim that anyne can make it in the industry. Hwever, scial media ecnmy experts uncvered a huge incme gap between successful influencers and everyne else. Fr mst peple trying t becme an influencer, their passin prjects f cntent creatin ften becme free wrk fr brands.
Mst influencers are self-emplyed, ften experiencing incnsistent incme and a lack f prtectin that cmes with lng-term emplyment. The risks f self-emplyment are increased in the influencer industry by an absence f industry standards and little pay transparency. Influencers are ften frced t assess their wn value and determine fees fr their wrk. As a result, cntent creatrs ften undervalue their wn creative labur, and many end up wrking fr free.
Influencers are als ften at the mercy f algrithms — the behind-the-scenes cmputer prgrams that determine which psts are shwn, in which rder, t users. Platfrms share little detail abut their algrithms, yet they finally determine wh and what gains visibility and influence n scial media. The threat f invisibility is a cnstant surce f insecurity fr influencers, wh are under cnstant pressure t feed platfrms with cntent. If they dn’t, they may be “punished” by the algrithm — having psts hidden r displayed lwer dwn n search results.
Cnstant nline presence leads t ne f the mst cmmn issues in the influencer industry: mental health cncerns. Influencers can cnnect t their platfrm wrkspaces and audience at any time f day r night, which can lead t them verwrking. Cupled with the fear f nline criticism, it cntributes t mental and physical health issues.
Althugh becming an influencer may lk appealing t mre and mre peple, the industry’s dark underside needs t be made visible and imprved thrugh enhanced emplyment regulatin and industry-led cultural change.
12. Which f the fllwing wrds cans replace “enticing” in Paragraph 1?
A. Imaginative.B. Similar.C. Attractive.D. Traditinal.
13. What’s ne f the reasns fr influencers’ undervaluing their creative wrk?
A. Standardized prtectin.B. Invisibility f payment.
C. Assessment f wn wrk.D. Passin fr cntent creatin.
14. What may cause the influencers’ stress accrding t Paragraph 4?
A. Having t wrk ut the rder f psts t be displayed.
B. Finding it difficult t create new cntent cnstantly.
C. Having little knwledge f platfrm algrithms.
D. Being unequally punished by platfrms.
15. Why des the authr write this text?
A. T shw the dark side f wrking as an nline cntent creatr.
B. T reveal relatinships between platfrms and influencers.
C. T stress the imprtance f visibility in the nline wrld.
D. T describe the life f self-emplyed cntent creatrs.
