We grw up ging t schl and learning abut “cmmn cre” subjects, alng with
thers. We are als given infrmatin abut things frm the media, gvernments, and the
Internet. We are cnditined by all f this infrmatin t see reality. But all that learning is nt as
imprtant as it's made ut t be.In fact,it can be limiting yu t a life f medicrity (平庸).
The mre yu learn abut things, whether they are true r nt,the mre rigid yur reality becmes. The less pssible certain things seem t be limiting yur ability t imagine pssibilities
as a child des. This ges fr infrmatin as well as applied activities.
This is nt t say that yu shuld nt learn anything. The key is,yu shuld be able t learn,
unlearn, and relearn.Yu shuld be able t get rid f infrmatin that becmes cntradicted by
smething with mre evidence supprting it,and reprgram ver things which n lnger serve
yur cntinued evlutin.
The sner yu allw yurself t g thrugh the prcess f unlearning, the easier it will be t
unlearn things which are limiting yur ability t see things as the limitless pssibilities they are.As
Seneca nce said,“The mind is slw t unlearn what it learned early.” This is why yu see ld
peple becme set in their ways, being imprisned by the same beliefs they had in their
yuth.Once thse beliefs are frmed in the brain, it will take smething extrardinary t
reprgram ver them.
Yu can g abut unlearning by making a list f a few beliefs yu have abut things which
yu feel may be hlding yu back frm evlving. Then explre what else is pssible in regards t
thse areas and take actin. When yu cme acrss infrmatin and receive greater understanding
n smething, make it a part f yur reality and belief system.
Remind yurself that even thugh sme new infrmatin has replaced what yu believed was
true and wrth cntinuing t supprt,it may ne day als be replaced by smething even mre
cnsistent with truth and mre helpful with yur evlutin.
Learning t unlearn is the highest frm f learning.Yu will begin t ntice yu are grwing
nce again.
28.When shuld yu unlearn things?
A.When they becme bring.
B.When they are n lnger helpful.
C.When they are against yur beliefs.
D.When they are difficult t learn.

Nt nly d we humans enjy talking—and talking a lt—we als d s in very different
ways: abut 6, 000 languages are spken tday wrldwide.Hw this wealth f expressin
develped, hwever, largely remains unknwn.A grup f researchers at the Max Planck Institute fr Psychlinguistics have nw fund that wrdrders in languages frm different language
families develp differently.
This cntradicts the cmmn understanding that wrdrder develps in accrdance with a
set f universal rules, applicable t all languages. The researchers have cncluded that languages
d nt primarily fllw innate (固有的) rules f language prcessing in the brain.Rather, sentence
structure is determined by the histrical cntext in which a language develps.
The researchers analysed 301 languages frm fur majr language families:Austrnesian,
IndEurpean,Bantu and UtAztecan. They fcused n the rder f the different sentence parts,
such as “verbbject”,“prepsitinnun”,r “relative clausenun”,and whether their
psitin in the sentence influenced the ther parts f the sentence. In this way,the researchers
wanted t find ut whether the psitin f the verb has ther syntactic (句法的) cnsequences:if
the verb is placed befre the bject,fr example,“The player kicks the ball”,is the prepsitin
als placed befre the nun (“int the gal”)? Such a pattern is bserved in many languages,
but is it a cmmn feature f hw languages develp?
“ Our study shws that different prcesses ccur in different language families,” says
Michael Dunn, the lead researcher.“The evlutin f language des nt fllw ne universal set
f rules.” Fr example, the “verbbject” pattern influences the “prepsitinnun” pattern
in the Austrnesian and IndEurpean languages, but nt in the same way,and nt in the ther
tw language families.
“ Cultural evlutin has much mre influence n language develpment than universal
factrs.Language structure is apparently nt s much bilgically determined as it is shaped by its
ancestry,” says Michael Dunn.
32.What des the underlined “This” in Paragraph 2 refer t?
A.Peple enjy talking a lt in different ways.
B.Abut 6,000 languages are spken tday wrldwide.
C.The grup f researchers at the Max Planck Institute.
D.Wrdrders in different languages develp differently.
33.Why did the researchers analyse the 301 languages?
A.T find ut which language family they belnged t.
共 10 页 第 6页
B.T find ut whether they had an influence n sprts.
C.T find ut hw sentences in them were frmed.
D.T find ut whether they develped the same way r nt.
34.What can be knwn frm the study abut the language develpment?
A.It's a natural prcess. B.It's a cultural prcess. C.It's a universal prcess. D.It's a bilgical prcess.
35.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Hw Languages Changed in Histry
B.What Rules Language Develpment Obeys
C.Histrical Cntext Guides Language
