“What have I gtten myself int?” I wndered as I sat thrugh a research meeting cnducted entirely in Plish, unable t even read the title n the screen. Having nly basic Plish language skills, I fund my experiment in crss-culture cperatin mre challenging than I had expected.
The idea f spending time abrad hadn’t ccurred t me until my advisr suggested it during my first year. With his supprt, I enjyed a remarkable summer in a labratry in Japan, which left me wanting mre. S, I applied fr a Fulbright fellwship in Pland. T receive the fellwship, I first had t find a lab t hst me, and neither I nr my advisr had any cnnectins t Pland.
Relying n Ggle t translate lab websites, I began t send cld emails. When my eventual hst respnded, eager t cllabrate, I was thrilled. I suddenly felt the pssibilities fr my research career were endless and glbal.
I was the first visiting schlar my research grup had hsted frm the United States, and my Plish clleagues were curius abut what brught me t their cuntry. This led t many fruitful discussins abut the similarities and differences in hw science is cnducted acrss cultures. Fr example, much f the funding in Pland is awarded t teams rather than individuals. The system prmtes crss-disciplinary ( 跨 学 科 的 ) cperatins acrss the cuntry, which in turn shapes hw scientists design and carry ut studies.
I learned as much abut the histry and culture in Central and Eastern Eurpe as I did
scientifically. Clleagues related firsthand accunts abut challenges the regin faced during the Cld War. Many labratries had limited resurces, and they rarely published their research in English. Thse cnditins helped shape research n antimicrbial treatment int bacteriphage and antibitics, and Pland remain leaders in the frmer t this day.
My cultural immersin made me a better researcher. I nw see crss-cultural cperatins as a way t vercme cmmunicatin barriers that can blck prgress in science. By stepping utside my cmfrt zne, I gained the cnfidence t navigate my research in new directins that I might have therwise bxed myself ut f.
Why did the authr apply fr fellwship in Pland?
      T fllw the advisr’s suggestin.
T practise Plish and learn its culture.
      T have anther rewarding experience.
T cntinue the research started in Japan.
Hw did the authr benefit frm the experience in Pland?
He became an expert in Cld War histry.
He had access t crss-disciplinary cperatins.
He btained scientific knwledge and a glbal perspective.
He secured individual funding fr future research prjects.
Which wrds best describe the authr?
Helpful and diligent.B. Curius and innvative.
      C. Ambitius and cmpetitive.D. Adventurus and cperative.
What des the authr imply abut crss-cultural cperatins?
They are essential fr the advancement f science.
They might bx researchers ut f a certain directin.
They shuld priritize language training ver research.
They are valueless fr creative minds in scientific field.

This year saw the publicatin, in stages, f the sixth reprt by the UN's Intergvernmental Panel n Climate Change (IPCC) — a reprt which was depressing reading fr many climate scientists, and in sme ways ffered a ray f hpe.
Why depressing? Because the reprt cnfirmed what scientists have been saying fr years: That human activity, particularly in the frm f emissins f greenhuse gases, is respnsible fr the warming in the past few centuries, and that unless such emissins are greatly reduced, we will sn bring abut ur entire ecsystem's destructin. The reprt cncluded that 1.5°C f glbal warming ver the next cuple f hundred years is already “baked in”. This makes the gals utlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement — that natins agreed t keep warming belw 2°C and hpefully belw 1.5°C — much harder t meet. Wrse still, the IPCC reprt was fllwed later in the year by the COP27 summit (峰会), described by Prf. Dann Mitchell, as "a cmplete failure, ther than sme cmmitment t lss and damage.”
And the ray f hpe? The IPCC's sixth reprt was brader in apprach than previus studies —lking in-depth fr the first time at the rle played in warming by shrt-term greenhuse gases such as methane,fr instance.
“Reducing carbn emissins is always the best apprach: stp the prblem at its surce,” said Mitchell. "But we als need ther appraches t help with this. Methane is imprtant, but it's s shrt-lived—that's why we haven't been s bthered when cmpared with CO2.”
The IPCC wrking grups shwed ptential adaptatin paths, and they are the ther things we can d in terms f fighting climate change and relieving its wrst effects, rather than simply reducing carbn emissins. This wuld include taking measures such as switching t a mre plant-based diet (t reduce methane emissins), cntrlling ppulatin grwth, reducing financial inequality and develping means by which we might remve CO2, which is already in ur atmsphere, rather than simply preventing it being released.
Which f the fllwing can best describe the sixth reprt by IPCC?
      Seemingly cntradictry.
      Whlly prmising.
      Particularly hpeless.
      Exceptinally new.
What des the underlined phrase “baked in” in paragraph 2 mean?
      ut f date.B. in prgress.
      C. under discussin.D. under cntrl.
Accrding t the passage, what can we learn abut methane?
It has been lng regarded as a majr surce f glbal warming.
It is cnsidered as a new apprach t reducing glbal warming.
Its bst t glbal warming is as much as ther greenhuse gases.
Its rle in glbal warming had been verlked befre the reprt.
Hw many aspects d the adaptatin paths invlve in the last paragraph?
      A. 2B. 3C. 4D. 5
      D
The emergence f generative AI by Western firms like OpenAI and Anthrpic has cncentrated technlgical pwer. Much like the early industrial revlutins, the develpment f AI appeared t have prmted us int an era where nly a handful f firms
—furnished with vast surce f funding, specific data, and deep-rted ecsystems —are set t dminate the market. Hwever, it is challenged by DeepSeek, a new player, claiming its R1 reasning mdel was develped at a fractin f the typical cst — $5-6 millin versus hundreds f millins.
This breakthrugh depends n targeted enhancements: mixed-precisin arithmetic (算术 ), GPU lad balancing, and YaRN cntext extensin. These innvatins reduce cmputatinal demands, ptentially lwering barriers t AI develpment. Critically, DeepSeek’s apprach builds n prir research and develpment fundamentals by Western
firms. Open-surce framewrks pineered by well-funded labs enabled DeepSeek t plish existing technlgies rather than starting frm scratch.
While its cst-efficiency culd demcratize ( 使民主化) AI by empwering startup cmpanies, significant risks accmpany its mdel. Security analysts warn that DeepSeek’s prmises f impressive perfrmance and lw peratinal csts cme with heightened risks. Critics have raised alarm bells arund security, warning that its cst-effective, pen-surce design appears t cme at the cst f strng safeguards — making it ntably easy t generate harmful, insecure, r prejudiced utputs. Studies suggest it prduces harmful cntent at higher rates than Western mdels and cllects sensitive user data (e.g. IP addresses) stred n Chinese servers, raising privacy cncerns.
Plicymakers face a duble reality: DeepSeek breaks the assumptin that AI dminance requires vast fund, yet its peratinal mdel intrduces mral dilemmas. The key t slving the prblem lies in balancing cmpetitin with safety standards. Market strategies may shift tward efficiency-driven, pen-surce cperatin. Ultimately, DeepSeek’s emergence highlights a tensin — demcratizing AI while reducing risks f insecure utputs.
In an era f rapidly evlving AI ecnmics, DeepSeek’s breakthrugh may serve as a catalyst (化剂) fr a brader, mre inclusive technlgical revlutin —ne where cmpetitin, rather than cncentratin, defines success.
What is the breakthrugh claimed by DeepSeek in AI develpment?
      Reducing cmputatinal demands significantly.
      Creating a new frm f mixed-precisin arithmetic.
Cnstructing its AI system with a substantially lwer cst.
Balancing GPU lad mre efficiently than previus mdels.
Which f the fllwing statement is TRUE abut DeepSeek regarding data practices?
Its mdels require expensive user subscriptins.
It cllects sensitive data stred n Chinese servers.
It refuses t share research with Western cmpanies.
It has strng safeguards t avid generating harmful utputs.
What dilemma d plicymakers face abut DeepSeek’s emergence?
Priritizing data cllectin ver user privacy.
      Prmting clsed-surce ver pen-surce mdels.
Chsing between funding startups and established firms.
Weighing up technlgical innvatin accessibility and safeguards.
Which f the fllwing best states the main idea f the passage?
DeepSeek intrduces a new era f AI demcratizatin.
DeepSeek faces criticism ver its ptential security risks.
DeepSeek challenges traditinal AI develpment with a cst-efficient mdel.
The emergence f generative AI by Western firms has led t market dminatin.

      一、评分原则
      总分25 分,按 5 个档次给分。
      读后续写评分以 17 分为参考线,根据续写内容的连贯性、情节的合理性以及语言质量定档给分,然后以该档次的要求衡量、确定或调整档次,最后给分。
      评分时,应主要从以下四个方面考虑:
      与所给短文及段落开头语的衔接程度; (2)内容的合理性;
      (3)应用语法结构和词汇的丰富性和准确性; (4)上下文的连贯性。
      重点关注续写完整度,结尾处有升华,可加 1~2 分。(关于升华,不要出现几个抽象
      词就简单加分,要上升到正能量层面的完整表达,要出彩,因为这是加分项,不能滥用。)
      如果仅续写一个段落,三档中位 12.5 分为上限,在此基础上相应扣分。
      拼写与标点符号是语言准确性的一个方面,评分时,应视其对交际的影响程度予以考虑。英、美拼写及词汇用法均可接受。
