My daughter is a smart kid. But she never read bks fr pleasure.
When I faced this truth a few mnths ag, it felt like a parenting failure. Certainly, my daughter’s having
landed a smartphne last year is part f the prblem. I culd see that what my daughter was lking fr, like s
many her age, was escape. T me, that felt develpmentally apprpriate. The prblem was that the easiest way fr
her t find escape was t dive int the addictive chas f her smartphne.
S I campaigned. I tld her she needed t read because nvels are the best way t learn abut hw peple’s
insides wrk. She said she culd learn mre frm watching the peple she fllwed n scial media, wh were all
abut spilling their insides.
I culd nt win ur debates, I realized, because few f my daughters’ arguments against reading seemed
wrng t me. Yes, reading is a way t braden yur universe and discver new wrlds—but s is the entire internet.
S I decided t cut thrugh all the reasning with a cld, hard practicality: cash. I tld my 12-year-ld I wuld
pay her $100 if she finished the bk I picked fr her within a mnth.
We then embarked n a beach hliday. And befre the seventh day was dne, my daughter had finished the
bk. When we gt back hme, she asked fr the sequel, and then finished it in abut tw weeks—at n extra
charge.
第 5页/共 13页
It actually wrked! But will this lead t her reading “Little Wmen”? T tearing thrugh “Catcher in the Rye”
and “White Teeth”? Will it result in a lng reading life full f night-stand piles f bks?
I dn’t knw. What I d knw is that tgether, we finally pened a new dr fr her t the printed page: a
quiet persnal place that I imagine—I hpe—will serve her fr a lifetime. That feels like the best mney I ever
spent.
24. Hw did the authr feel abut her daughter’s attachment t smartphnes?
A. She fund it an ideal escape.
B. She cnsidered it t be her fault.
C. She regarded it as understandable.
D. She blamed it n her daughter’s peers.
25. Why did the authr give up trying t persuade her daughter?
A. Nvels failed t reflect real life.
B. Her daughter dismissed peple’s insides.
C. The internet ffered brader experiences.
D. Her daughter’s arguments made sme sense.
26. What des the underlined wrd “sequel” in paragraph 6 prbably mean?
A. Plan. B. Reward. C. Warm-up. D. Fllw-up.
27. Why des the authr mentin “Little Wmen” and ther bks in paragraph 7?

Brnze Age desert dwellers (居住者)unearthed frm graves in what’s nw nrthwest China were buried with
cheese spread n their heads and necks — perhaps as a snack packed fr the afterlife.
A decade after the dairy discvery, scientists have sequenced DNA frm the 3,600-year-ld cheese, the ldest
in the archaelgical recrd. The analysis revealed hw the Xiahe peple made cheese, shwing the way humans
made use f micrbes (微生物) t imprve their fd and hw micrbes can be used t track cultural influences
thrugh the ages. The findings, published Wednesday in the jurnal Cell, pen a “new frntier in ancient DNA
studies,” said Christina Warinner frm Harvard University, wh wasn’t invlved in the research.
A team led by Chinese palegeneticist Qiamei Fu identified gat and cattle DNA in samples f the cheese.
The researchers were als able t sequence DNA f micrbes cntained in the cheese, cnfirming it was kefir, a
第 6页/共 13页
type f cheese that’s still widely made and eaten tday.
Fu’s team discvered that the three cheese samples frm the graves cntained Lactbacillus kefiranfaciens,
which is cmmnly fund in present-day kefir cheese. Tday, there are tw majr grups f Lactbacillus bacteria
— ne that riginated in Russia and anther frm Tibet, China, accrding t the study. When Fu and her
clleagues cmpared Lactbacillus kefiranfaciens frm the ancient kefir cheese with the mdern-day species, they
fund that it was clsely related t a less cmmn grup f Lactbacillus that riginated in Tibet.
“The bacterium’s rigins challenge a lng-held belief that kefir began nly in Russia”, Fu said. “By examining
dairy prducts, we’ve gained a clearer picture f ancient human life and their interactins with the wrld. This is
just the beginning.”
It was remarkable that nt nly had the cheese survived but that it was pssible t sequence DNA frm the
fdstuff, Fu said. “Ancient DNA analysis, especially n micrbes, faces significant technical prblems, largely
due t the presence f mdern bacteria in the samples,” he added.
28. What did the analysis f the ancient cheese reveal?
A. The burial custms f the Xiahe peple.
B. The effect f diet n health in ancient China.
C. The develpment f ancient cheese-making tls.
D. The use f micrbes t imprve fd and t track culture.
29. What can we learn abut kefir cheese frm Fu’s study?
A. It is the mst ppular mdern-day type. B. It is nt cmmnly cnsumed in Russia.
C. It might have riginated in Russia and Tibet. D. It must have evlved cnsiderably ver time.
30. What des Fu think f the study?
A. Insightful. B. Inaccurate. C. Puzzling. D. Cmprehensive.
31 What is the best title fr the text?
A. The Origin f Cheese Calling fr Further Research
B. DNA frm Ancient Cheese Sequenced by Scientists
C. A Dairy Discvery Making fr a Dietary Breakthrugh
D. 3,600-year-ld Cheese Fund in Ancient Graves in China

The United States has the largest prisn ppulatin in the wrld and the highest rate f imprisnment per
persn. In 2016, 2.3 millin peple were imprisned, despite a massive decline in bth vilent and prperty crimes.
第 7页/共 13页
These alarming statistics prvide insight int why crime regulatin and mass imprisnment are such ht tpics
tday, and many schlars, lawyers, and plicymakers have explred theries and strategies t ensure public safety,
with the brken windws thery being ne f the mst influential.
The brken windws thery states that visible signs f disrder, such as brken windws, create an urban
envirnment that prmtes even mre crime and disrder. As such, plicing these minr issues will help create a
safe sciety where crime rates, including vilent crime rates, are lw.
A majr assumptin that the brken windws thery makes is that an envirnment’s landscape cmmunicates
t its residents in sme way. A brken windw, fr instance, symblizes a defenseless, disrderly cmmunity that
cannt handle crime — pening the drs t all kinds f unwanted activity t ccur. In such envirnments,
residents n lnger see their cmmunities as safe spaces and will avid spending time in public spaces t prtect
themselves frm ptential attacks. Additinally, the neglect f these brken windws als symblizes a lack f
infrmal scial cntrl — actins that regulate behavir, such as fllwing scial nrms and intervening as a
bystander when a crime is cmmitted. Withut this cntrl, individuals wuld be mre likely t engage in criminal
behavir, bth vilent and nnvilent, in this type f area.
Peple have different appraches t the applicatin f the brken windws thery. Supprters hld that
infrmal scial cntrl (such as cmmunity invlvement) and frmal scial cntrl (such as plice interventin) are
crucial fr effectively regulating crime. Hwever, critics pint ut that there is n clear causal relatinship between
lack f rder and crime. Additinally, ver-plicing minr ffenses can unfairly impact marginalized (边缘化的)
cmmunities.
Despite nging debates, cities such as Fergusn, Missuri are heavily pliced and fine ffenders heavily fr
brken windw types f crimes. Crime regulatin is nt easy, but the brken windws thery prvides an apprach
t reducing ffenses and maintaining rder in sciety.
32. What d the statistics in paragraph 1 demnstrate?
A. The decline in crimes. B. The rt f imprisnment.
C The strategy t ensure safety. D. The need t cntain crimes.
33. What is the fcus f brken windws plicing?
A. Fighting serius crimes. B. Handling minr disrder.
C. Repairing brken windws. D. Prmting cmmunity unity.
34. Which f the fllwing can best illustrate the brken windws thery?
第 8页/共 13页
A.
B.
C.
D.
35. What is the authr’s attitude twards the brken windws thery?
A. Critical. B. Unclear. C. Supprtive. D. Dubtful.

When I bught my huse fifteen years ag, it came with mre than just lse flrbards and peeling paint.

It was like stepping int a frgtten museum exhibit.
