Nthing screamed freedm fr me as a kid like green rubber bts. Each winter meant new bts fr my little brther and me. Smetimes they were Christmas presents, but mre ften they were simply necessities fr tw bys wh tk their jb f getting dirty very seriusly and whse feet grew like they stepped in fertilizer(肥料) each night.
Depending n the mdel, they might have lng yellw laces(鞋带) all the way up the frnt and a strip f yellw rubber arund the tp. Smetimes we gt the cmmn slip-n kind, but I liked the lace-up type better. I lved threading thse laces in and ut and in and ut and then fastened them dwn tight at the tp t lck the legs f my veralls r jeans in place. Yu culdn’t maintain the wavy effect with the slip-n kind, s yu culdn’t lk like a British sldier fr very lng with thse.
The nly drawback t the laces was that ver time the plastic tip wuld wear ff and the laces wuld be wrn ut. Then threading them thrugh the eyes gt t be a chre—especially when sme weeds r insects wuld grab hld f the ends and make a sticky mess.
Getting bts at the stre was nice, but nthing was better than getting bts in a wrapped-up bx. The best nes have a pretty lid and pen like a treasure chest. Smetimes a big sticker with a picture f the bts greeted us frm under the wrapped paper. But every time, raising the lid released a sweet smell f rubbery gdness.
I lved the smth inside f the bt, and mving my tes in it. There was always plenty f space fr grwing feet. Then came the imprtant walk arund the rm and up and dwn the hall, bming alng n the hardwd flr. Best f all was the bang f the back dr, the clumping dwn steps, and the heavy, thunderus thunk, thunk acrss the yard t the nearest hle f mud and freedm.

      C. Visual effect n clthing.D. Easier utdr mvement.
      26. Hw des the authr view the laces’ drawback?
      A. Disappinting.B. Insignificant.C. Regrettable.D. Cnfusing.
      27. Where is the passage mst prbably taken frm?
      A. A children’s strybk.B. A persnal recllectin.

New research indicates that physical activity lwers cardivascular (心血管的) disease risk in part by reducing stress-related signals in the brain.
In the study, which was led by investigatrs at Massachusetts General Hspital (MGH), peple with stress-related cnditins such as depressin experienced the mst cardivascular benefits frm physical activity.
T assess the mechanisms (机制) underlying the psychlgical and cardivascular disease benefits f physical activity, Ahmed Tawakl, MD, an investigatr and cardilgist in the Cardivascular Imaging Research Center at MGH, and his clleagues analyzed medical recrds and ther infrmatin f 50,359 participants frm the Mass General Brigham Bibank wh cmpleted a physical activity survey. A subset f 774 participants als underwent brain imaging tests and measurements f stress-related brain activity.
Over a median fllw-up f 10 years, 12.9% f participants develped cardivascular disease. Participants wh met physical activity recmmendatins had a 23% lwer risk f develping cardivascular disease cmpared with thse nt meeting these recmmendatins. Individuals with higher levels f physical activity als tended t have lwer stress-related brain activity.
Significantly, reductins in stress-related brain activity were driven by gains in functin in the prefrntal crtex (前额叶皮质), a part f the brain invlved in executive (执行的) functin (i.e. decisin making and impulse cntrl). It is knwn t cntrl stress centers f the brain.
As an extensin f this finding, the researchers fund in a grup f 50,359 participants that the cardivascular benefit f exercise was substantially greater amng participants wh wuld be expected t have higher stress-related brain activity, such as thse with pre-existing depressin.
Analyses accunted fr ther lifestyle variables and risk factrs fr cardivascular disease. Mrever, reductins in stress-related brain signals partially accunted fr physical activity’s cardivascular benefit.
“Physical activity was rughly twice as effective in lwering cardivascular disease risk amng thse with depressin. Effects n the brain’s stress-related activity may explain this nvel bservatin,” said Tawakl, wh is the senir authr f the study.
      28. Why did the research grup analyze medical data f the participants?
T find ut hw exercise lwers cardivascular risk.
T evaluate the impact f cardivascular disease.
T examine the impacts f cardivascular disease.
T test hw much physical activity the participants needed.
Hw may physical activity lwer cardivascular disease risk?
By prmting functin f the brain.
By cntrlling stress centers f the brain.
      By decreasing stress-related brain activity.
By reducing executive functin f the brain.
      What advice may Tawakl give?
      T wrk ut regularly.B. T eat healthily.
T be in a gd md.D. T avid cardivascular disease.
In which sectin may the text appear in a newspaper?
Mind and learning.B. Matter and energy.
Science and sciety. D. Health and medicine.

ChatGPT appears t have better “bedside manners” than sme dctrs—at least when their written advice is rated fr quality and empathy (同理心), a study has shwn.
The study, published in the jurnal JAMA Internal Medicine, used data frm scial news website Reddit’s Ask Dcs frum, in which members can pst medical questins answered by verified healthcare prfessinals. The team randmly sampled 195 exchanges frm Ask Dcs where a verified dctr respnded t a public questin. The riginal questins were then psed t the AI language mdel ChatGPT, which was asked t respnd. Finally, a panel f three licensed healthcare prfessinals, wh did nt knw whether the respnse came frm a human physician r ChatGPT, rated the answers fr quality and empathy.

Christpher Lnghurst, f UC San Dieg Health, said:“These results suggest that tls like ChatGPT can efficiently draft high-quality, persnalized medical advice fr review by clinicians, and we are beginning that prcess at UCSD Health.”
Prfessr James Davenprt, f the University f Bath, wh was nt invlved in the research, said: “The paper des nt say that ChatGPT can replace dctrs, but des, quite reasnably, call fr further research int whether and hw ChatGPT can assist physicians in respnse generatin.”
Sme nted that, given ChatGPT was specifically designed t be likable, it was nt surprising that it wrte texts that came acrss as empathic. It als tended t give lnger, chattier answers than human dctrs, which culd have played a rle in its higher ratings. Others cautined against relying n language mdels fr factual infrmatin due t their tendency t generate made-up “facts”.
What des the underlined wrd “verified” in paragraph 2 mean?
      dedicated. B. licensed.C. intelligent.D. enthusiastic.
What is the percentage difference in empathy ratings between dctrs’ respnses and ChatGPT’s respnses?
      A. 17 percent. B. 40 percent. C. 57 percent. D. 74 percent.
      34. What’s Prfessr Davenprt’s view regarding the paper’s prpsal fr additinal investigatin int ChatGPT’s supprt fr physicians?
      Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Uncncerned. D. Disapprving.
What cncern was raised abut using ChatGPT?
      A. Its respnses might be ne-sided. B. It fails t give empathic respnses.
      C. It may prduce unreliable infrmatin. D. It is unable t ffer high-quality advice.

I was enjying the phts when ne caught my eye. It was a picture f the pumpkin we had carved tgether. Underneath, Brian had written, “My first real win with my brther. Even if we didn’t get first, it was a victry because we wrked as a team.” Seeing thse wrds, a wave f guilt washed ver me. I remembered hw I had selfishly taken all the mney and lied t him. I realized hw much I had let him dwn. I turned t Brian, ready t cnfess everything.
      Paragraph 2:
“Yu actually knew and didn’t say anything?” I was shcked. Brian just smiled gently and said, “I always knew. But I als knew that yu needed that game mre than the mney at that time. And I was prud f ur teamwrk, nt the prize. I hped ne day yu’d understand the real meaning f winning tgether.” His wrds made me feel even mre ashamed. I aplgized sincerely, vwing t make it up t him. Frm then n, I truly understd my rle as his guardian angel and the imprtance f true brtherhd.
