I’d planned t spend my weekend in the sun, ptting flwers utdrs. But that was befre the pair f crws. Out f nwhere, they had set up their base camp in ur backyard.
We first discvered ur feathered enemies n Friday mrning. It was early and the sund the birds made travelled thrugh ur neighbrhd. I figured they’d g away sn. But, n. They were getting luder and prbably annying my neighbrs nearly as much as us with the nise. I admit I gt a little desperate.
Then, n Sunday afternn, I lked ut the kitchen windw t see ur dg Quatchi staring at smething n the grund. I went t explre and fund a small cal-black bird in the grass. Its eyes were milky, and it stayed perfectly still as my dg inched twards it. Only when Quatchi tuched his nse t its head did it walk away. I grabbed the dg and lcked him inside and came back with my camera.
It never ccurred t me that the yung wuld be hanging ut n the grund, grwing and gaining strength as its parents guarded it frm abve. The secnd I saw this little creature I frgave the crws.
T be hnest, I’ve never been much f a bird persn. I als have a healthy respect fr birds, and by healthy I mean slightly fear-based. They’re basically living dinsaurs.
I wish they’d chsen anther backyard. There are nly s many sunny days in Seattle, and I still can’t d any gardening ut there. But I’m als grateful that I gt t see this little bit f nature unfld up clse. It’s pretty amazing.

“We have always assumed that liking drives intake--we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But n ne has actually directly bthered t cnnect these persnality traits(特点) with intake f chili peppers,” said Prfessr Jhn Hayes frm Pennsylvania State University, wh led the study.

In the study, 97 participants, bth male and female, were asked t fill ut questinnaires abut certain traits f their persnality, fr example, whether they like new experiences r tend t avid risks. They were then given cups f water with capsaicin, the plant chemical that makes chili burn, mixed int them.
By cmparing the answers t the questinnaires and what participants said they felt abut the spicy water researchers fund that thse wh were mst inclined t enjy actin mvies r take risks were abut six times mre likely t enjy the spicy water.
Interestingly, we used t believe that the reasn why sme peple can withstand spicy fd is that their tngues have becme less sensitive t it. Hwever, this latest study has fund therwise. “It’s nt that it desn’t burn as badly, it’s that yu actually learn t like the burn,” Hayes explained.
