Scttish-brn Dame Evelyn Glennie is ne f the wrld’s mst recgnized percussinists (打击乐器乐手). Hwever, she started ging deaf at the age f eight due t a nerve disease. At 12, she ttally lst her hearing.
At first, Glennie was desperate. But her percussin teacher at schl taught her t feel particular ntes. Fr example, she had t place her hands n a wall, and he wuld play tw ntes n tw timpani. He wuld then ask her which was the higher nte and where she felt the vibratin. Thrugh trials and errrs, she managed t distinguish the pitch f ntes by assciating where n her bdy she feels the sund. Tgether with her lip-reading skills, and amazing musicianship, she has cnquered any trubles and incnvenience caused by her impairment.

When preparing fruit and vegetables, many peple will peel (削皮) them. But ften, it’s nt necessary.

S culd cnsuming fruit and vegetable peels help with this issue by adding imprtant nutrients t peple’s diets?
They can certainly cntribute. Fr example, nutritinally imprtant amunts f vitamins and minerals are fund in the peels f seven rt vegetables: beetrt, field mustard, wild carrt, sweet ptat, radish, ginger and white ptat. And the US Department f Agriculture shws that unpeeled apples cntain 15% mre vitamin C, 267% mre vitamin K, 20% mre calcium and 85% mre fibre than peeled apples.
Anther reasn is the effect n the envirnment. Accrding t the UN’s Fd and Agriculture Organizatin, uneaten fd, including peels, generates 8%-10% f the wrld’s greenhuse gas emissins. New Zealand alne reprts an annual wastage f 13,658 tnnes f vegetable peels and 986 tnnes f fruit peels.
Given the nutrient cntent f peels and its cntributin t fd waste, why d peple peel fruit and vegetables at all? Sme must be peeled as the uter parts dn’t taste nice, are hard t clean r cause harm. Als, peeling may be a necessary part f the recipe, fr example, when making mashed ptat. But many peels, such as carrt and kiwifruit, are suitable t be eaten, yet peple habitually peel them anyway. Sme peple peel fruit and veg because they are cncerned abut pesticides (杀虫剂) n the surface.

With the data cllected, researchers characterized peple by hw they mved. The first grup dutifully exercised fr a half-hur and then sat, almst nnstp, fr mre than 10hurs a day. Anther grup similarly wrked ut fr 30 minutes and sat fr lng hurs. But, in between, they rse ften and tk walks arund, spending time in light activities like fetching anther cup f cffee. The third grup sat, uninterrupted, fr up t 10 hurs, but als cllected an hur f exercise mst days. The final grup, which the researchers named “the mvers,” exercised abut an hur mst days, while als mving lightly fr abut tw hurs mre.
When the researchers crss-checked these grups against peple’s current health data, the first grup had the wrst indices. On the cntrary, the ther grups were all better ff and t abut the same extent, with relatively imprved bld sugar cntrl and chlesterl(胆固醇) levels and abut 8 percent less bdy fat than the first grup.
“A single 30-minute, daily wrkut ‘might nt be enugh’ t reduce the dwnsides f lng time sitting,” said Vahid Farrahi, the lead authr f the new study.“In additin t a brisk(轻快的) wrkut, we need t mve lightly and ften, cleaning, taking the stairs, taking a walk in the halls r just nt remaining still.”
