The summer heat has reached its breaking pint fr a grup f high schl students in Wales, as the bys decided t prtest their schl’s strict unifrm plicy which 1 wearing shrts n matter what weather, by shwing up t schl in skirts.

Petry is a kind f writing in which the sund and meaning f grups f wrds express ideas r emtin in additin t the experiences r strng feelings the writer 1 . Unlike mst ther frms f writing, petry is ften written in lines, rather than paragraphs. Petry als sunds different frm ther frms f writing, ften using rhythm and rhyme t create an interesting sund when read alud. Petry catches the attentin f a reader because it 2 t bth emtins and senses.
Sund is 3 the single mst imprtant aspect f any pem. The sund that any given wrd makes, r the sunds that cme frm specific grups f wrds used tgether, are what make petry s unique as a frm f writing. A typical stry r reprt des nt fcus n the sunds that each 4 wrd makes when read. But pems generally cntain few wrds, s it is imprtant that each wrd plays a rle in making an impact n the reader. Rhythm is the flw f sunds created by successive wrds in a pem. When yu read a pem yu can ften hear this 5 pattern, r “beat” in the sunds. This is called meter.
Sme f the ldest and best-knwn petry in the wrld came frm Ancient Greece. As far back as 700 BCE, pets there recited their wrk at public 6 and religius ceremnies. The great epic pems The Iliad and The Odyssey by Hmer came frm Greece. The Greeks eventually 7 Rman pets, such as Virgil, wh wrte the Aeneid 30 BCE. In medieval times, pems such as Bewulf, The Divine Cmedy by Dante. and The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer were written. Religin and rmance became the 8 f chice fr many pets at that time.

Rhincers hrns(犀牛角) are big business. Traditinal Chinese medicine uses them t treat rheumatism and gut, even thugh they have n actual pharmaceutical prperties beynd placeb(安慰剂). And craftsmen carve them int dagger handles. A kilgram can thus 1 as much as $60,000, s there is tremendus incentive fr pachers t hunt the animals. Since almst all rhincers ppulatins are endangered, several 2 , this is a serius prblem.
Sme cnservatinists therefre suggest that a way t reduce pressure n the animals might be t 3 the market with fakes. This, they hpe, wuld reduce the value f real hrns and 4 , the mtivatin t hunt rhins.
That wuld require the fake s t be gd. But Fritz Vllrath, a zlgist at Oxfrd University, thinks his skills as a frger(伪造者) are up t the challenge. As he writes in Scientific Reprts, he and his clleagues frm Fudan University, in Shanghai, have cme up with a cheap and easy-t-make fake 5 similar t the real thing.
The main ingredient f Dr. Vllrath’s frged hrns is hrsehair. Despite their 6 appearances, hrses and rhins are reasnably clsely related. Hrses d nt have hrns, f curse. But, technically, neither d rhins. The “hrns” f rhincers are cmpsed f hairs 7 tightly tgether using a mixture f dead cells.
Examinatin under a micrscpe shwed that hairs cllected frm hrses’ tails had similar features t thse fund in the hrns f rhins except that hrse hairs had a special layer 8 in thse f the rhin, but the researchers were able t remve this with a slutin f lithium brmide.(溴化锂溶液)
They bundled the treated hrse hairs as tightly as they culd in a matrix f a special glue, and then left the bundles in an ven t dry. The result was a rugh material that, with sme 9 , lked like rhin hrn.
Whether t launch 10 fakes nt the rhincers-hrn market wuld truly reduce prices and demand remains t be tested. But it might. It is an ld trick in warfare t leave the enemy with frged, wrthless mney. Smething similar may yet help save the rhin.

The Little Ice Age was nt a true ice age — 5 cling was prbably nly in the rder f 0.5 degrees Celsius, r 1 degree Fahrenheit — r was it cnsistently cld. Dagmar Degrt, assciate prfessr f envirnmental histry at Gergetwn University has 6 t the era as a series f “little ice ages.”
Althugh sme researchers argue it may have begun earlier, NASA defines the Little Ice Age as beginning arund 1550 and 7 f three cld peaks-arund 1650,1770 and 1850.

Sme scientists think fish farming culd 2 this prblem. Hwever, ther scientists wrry that fish farming culd cause serius envirnmental prblems.
Fish farming is nt a 3 thing. There were fish farms in China 3, 000 years ag. Tday, abut ne-third f the fish we eat cmes frm fish farms.
Mst fish farms raise plant-eating fish. Ppular kinds f plant-eating fish are carp, tilapia, and catfish. Unfrtunately, many fish farms are starting t raise meat-eating fish. A ppular type f meat-eating fish is salmn. These meat-eating fish live n 4 fd made frm wild fish. Hwever, it takes up t 5 tns f wild fish t prduce just 1 tn f farm-raised salmn. The 5 f wild fish is already decreasing.
Eventually, many types f wild fish culd g 6 . What will we d then? 7 f fish farming als say that farm-raised fish is unhealthy fr humans. They say the fish cntains dangerus chemicals. They als blame the issue n fish farming because it pllutes the water. Anther criticism is that farm-raised fish can spread diseases t wild fish.
Sme peple say that the farming methds being used nw hasn’t 8 enugh fish anyway. Instead f putting fish farms in lakes r near the cast, they say that the fish farms shuld be mved far ut int the cean. Several cuntries have already 9 with deep-cean farms. In the future, fish farms might be large cages that mve acrss the cean.

We are increasingly learning that ur guts (肠胃) and ur brains are intimately linked. But while there has been extensive research int hw ur diets can accelerate brain aging, less is knwn abut the fds that can prevent cgnitive 1 .
“The 2 field f Nutritinal Cgnitive Neurscience uncvers specific fds and nutrients that prmte brain health acrss the lifespan,” Arn Barbey, directr f the Center fr Brain, Bilgy and Behavir at the University f Nebraska-Lincln, tld Newsweek. “Central t this effrt is the discvery f nutrient prfiles that can be used in nutritinal interventins 3 at enhancing brain health.”
In a new study, published in the jurnal Nature Aging, Barbey, Jisheng Wu, and Christpher Zwilling used state-f-the-art technlgy t establish a set f specific nutrient prfiles assciated with better cgnitive perfrmance in adults ver the age f 65, ffering a 4 path twards designing nutritinal interventins t prmte healthy brain aging.

MUJI prducts came int being in the early 1980s as a result f a new md, calling fr a return t simplicity in daily life. Our aim was — and still is — t prvide ur custmers all ver the wrld with the fundamental things they need t live a busy, mdern, urban lifestyle. These things must be made frm gd, 1 materials, with n unnecessary frills r fancies and must sell at a reasnable price. Our clthes must feel gd n, ur statinery must be practical and ur husehld gds must be easy t use. This may seem elementary but it has always been a primary gal t ensure that MUJI custmers shuld never pay fr what they can’t use—i. e. added extras and fancy packaging. S, at MUJI yu’ll find n 2 prices, just simple, sund prducts yu can affrd, s simple in fact, they dn’t even carry a brand name. This is in direct cntrast t the usual marketing ply f prducing heavily branded, expensively designed, ver packaged gds.
At MUJI we pride urselves n being different. Mrever, ur prducts are made frm materials which we 3 n a glbal scale, nt because we think an extic rigin sunds mre exciting than ne n ur drstep but because we are cmmitted t using the best available material, wherever it cmes frm. Using these superir materials, we design ur prducts s that their simplicity brings ut their inherent 4 , bth f the material they’re made frm and the prducts themselves. Finally, we present ur prducts in the 5 f packaging — if any at all ——which neither masks nr makes them lk any mre than they are. As a result, the quality and credence f each prduct are self-evident. As life gets mre 6 , the need fr simple lifestyle becmes all the mre necessary. T find these, lk n further than MUJI.
The Cmpany’s basic principle is t develp new simple prducts at reasnable prices by making the best use f materials while cnsidering envirnmental issues. Thrugh the careful selectin f materials, 7 manufacturing prcesses and simplifying ur packaging, we have cntinually intrduced high quality MUJI brand prducts nt the market, at lwer than usual prices. Fr the materials, the 8 selectin criteria is always quality. These activities underpin ur ability t create lw-priced, high-quality prducts.
When packaging prducts, MUJI seeks nt t decrate them but rather t 9 their natural clrs and shapes. Fr this reasn, we use bulk packaging and place prducts in plain, unifrm cntainers. Faithful t ur philsphy f simplicity, this apprach is als in 10 with ur plicy f cnserving resurces and reducing waste. Thus, all MUJI prducts appear n stre shelves in simple packaging bearing nly prduct-related infrmatin and a price tag.

Nine ut f every ten humans are right-handed, an imbalance that researchers fr decades have attempted t explain, withut definitive success.
One f the ideas cnsidered is the fighting hypthesis, which suggests that left-handedness prvides an advantage in cmbat, albeit with an verall hit t physical health that keeps lefties rare in the ppulatin. Indeed, males — wh histrically have cmpeted mst strngly fr resurces and mates — are left-handed at slightly higher rates than females. Mrever, studies suggest that lefties tend t utperfrm right-handed peple in fighting sprts as well as in sprts that require hand-eye 1 like tennis, baseball, and vlleyball. This is likely because players are unaccustmed t cmpeting against lefties as they are rarer.
Hwever, a big prblem with the fighting hypthesis is that its predicted health disadvantage hasn’t 2 in large studies. On the whle, left-handed peple dn’t seem t suffer frm mre health prblems than right-handed peple, nr d they live shrter lives.Left vs. Right
Nticing this 3 issue, a tri f scientists based ut f Lund University in Sweden and Chester University in the United Kingdm prpsed an update t the fighting hypthesis that cmprts better with current data. In an article published in the jurnal Symmetry, Matz Larssn, Astrid Schepman, and Paul Rdway 4 that right-handed humans actually had a greater fighting advantage ver much f ur species’ histry, which is why they’ve becme far mre numerus.
“When left-handers became rarer, they gained a surprise advantage and the 5 f left- and right-handers in a ppulatin stabilized,” they further explained.
S why d right-handed humans have a fighting advantage? Accrding t the researchers, it has t d with the psitin f the heart and the ntin that humans did mst f their fighting with handheld, pinty weapns like wden spears fr much f ur species’ existence.
Abut three-quarters f the heart is situated in the left hemithrax, making the left side f the chest a(n) 6 target fr a mrtal blw. The researchers nte that when humans battle with stabbing weapns, the hand 7 t hld the weapn determines which area f the chest is expsed t an ppnent. A left-handed grip will rtate the left side f the chest, and thus mst f the heart, tward an enemy, while a right-handed grip will rtate it away. Mrever, a free left arm culd be used t deflect spear strikes in cmbat. 8 , this means that right-handed humans might be mre prtected frm a deadly strike.
Based n this 9 versin f the fighting hypthesis, a key predictin can be made. Since there is n health disadvantage frm being left-handed and fighting with pinty weapns is n lnger an evlutinary pressure, we shuld see the prprtin f left-handed peple stay the same in mdern scieties r bradly rise. Sme studies suggest that left-handedness has increased in the 20th century, but it is uncertain if this is due t genetic r cultural reasns.
It shuld be nted that this new explanatin fr the prepnderance f right-handed peple is still very much a hypthesis, based n 10 frm physilgical facts and behaviral anecdtes, with further supprt frm large, albeit bservatinal, data sets. The mdified fighting hypthesis is cgent, but as yet unprven.

As a result, it’s mre cmmn t eat at hme befre embarking n a flight. Thse with lnger travel jurneys may even eat a large meal t carry them thrugh the day. Still, nt all preflight eats are created 2 .
Tracy Lckwd Beckerman, a registered dietitian based in New Yrk City, said it’s wrth cnsidering yur verall health as yu prep fr travel, including what yu eat and drink. “It’s imprtant t eat fds that will keep yur immune system strng, keep yu hydrated and are easily digested befre flying,” Beckerman said.

“It’s super cmmn fr dehydratin t set in when flying, thanks t the lack f humidity and dry air in the 4 ,” Beckerman said. “That’s why it’s nt the smartest t have a meal high in sdium (钠) the day befre r mrning f yur flight.” Beckerman als advised ging easy n the salt shaker, pting fr snacks withut added salt t avid dehydratin-related headaches.
Alchl cnsumptin tends t cause dehydratin and has a different effect n the bdy than if yu were t have a drink at grund level due t the lw pressure in the cabin and the lw xygen 5 in bld. Therefre yu are mre likely t get drunk faster and urinate frequently.

      The Rise f Retr Fashin
D yu care abut what yu wear? Sme peple are very fashin-cnscius, carefully selecting the clthes they buy and hw they dress. Fashinistas (时尚达人) always want t be seen in the latest designer gear. But that trend is changing as retr r vintage clthing is becming a ppular and ften cheaper 1 .
Of curse, “vintage” clthing is really secnd-hand clthing, wrn befre but given a secnd life. The fashin industry has rebranded this stuff t make it lk 2 and pssibly give it a higher price tag. Whereas we may have seen an ld faded pair f jeans r a dress with a flwer 3 sld at a jumble sale (旧货拍卖会), nw we are 4 with butique and pp-up shps dedicated t the stuff. And in the UK, ne supermarket chain has started selling secnd-hand clthes in sme f its stres. Accrding t managing directr Steve Lynam, the mre peple invest in the circular ecnmy and shp vintage, the bigger 5 we will have n climate change.
Certainly, buying vintage puts 6 n extending the life f clthing. It cuts dwn n waste and helps t reduce the envirnmental damage caused by manufacturing new clthes. It’s als led t the rise f retr-fashin-items that yur mum r dad wre decades ag that nw lk 7 cl again! It’s a big thing with yunger peple and has been helped by the rise f platfrms like Depp and Vinted, which sell “wrn” clthes nline. As lanina Lucca, Senir Vice President at Depp explained: “The new 8 is lking t make chices that reduce their impact n the envirnment, with 77% f Gen Z saying that their biggest envirnmental 9 being that they want their chices t reduce waste.”
Anther ppular way f buying ld clthes is in a vintage kil sale. Peple pick what they want and then pay accrding t 10 rather than per item. Sme items are upcycled — re-mdelled r re-wrked by adding embridery, patches and ther additins. Satellites Can Help Us Fight Climate Change
At the beginning f 2021, President Je Biden exclaimed that “science is back” as we cntinued ur effrts t 1 the COVID emergency. That phrase cntinues t ring true acrss the federal gvernment. Science and its applicatins are being used at every agency t deal with public health 2 , build new transprtatin infrastructure, infrm plicy decisins and tackle the climate crisis.
Recently the Interir Department’s U.S. Gelgical Survey assumed 3 f Landsat 9 frm NASA, which built and launched it in 2021.This satellite is designed t 4 Earth’s land, water and ther natural resurces. Landsat missins supprt envirnmental sustainability and climate resilience. The Landsat prgram, which launched in July 1972, has helped us understand ur planet and the changes that are ccurring n it. That partnership has prpelled research and bservatin frward thrugh the launch f 5 Landsat satellites, each replacing its predecessrs and wrking in tandem with new capabilities and strengths.
I attended the histric launch f Landsat 9 in Califrnia. It was nthing 6 f amazing. I tured the missin cntrl center and met a yung scientist frm the Navaj Natin living far away frm hme. She uses Landsat 7 t see her hme frm many miles away, and with such data, she enables her cmmunity t manage water resurces in the face f a changing climate. This is the pwer and beauty f science at wrk.
All arund the glbe, scientists are using Landsat and ther imagery t interpret what is happening n Earth tday and t cmpare it with the 50 years’ 8 f data the Landsat prgram has cllected.
This science-based prgram and thse like it acrss federal agencies are pwerful tls in ur effrts t respnsibly manage ur resurces. Their priritizatin helps t demnstrate the Biden-Harris administratin’s cmmitment t lead with science. S, t, the resurces prvided thrugh the president’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflatin Reductin Act will be key t the develpment f lnger-term sustainability measures as we 9 t climate change, including building mre resilient cmmunities and prtecting ur natural envirnment.
Landsat NEXT is the upcming missin we will develp with NASA t pwer better science and decisin-making fr the next 50 years. Science is indeed 10 us n a path t a brighter future.
