An hur befre the shw, the backstage (后台) was busy and nisy. Yung male Peking Opera artists in their 20s were applying makeup, adjusting cstumes, stretching, and clearing their thrats. The air was filled with the sunds f traditinal Chinese instruments.
“These yung peple started learning with me when they were just kids—nw they’re adults, leading the shws themselves,” says Yang Shachun, an 85-year-ld Peking Opera master.

Wuxi, r martial (武术的) play, is the base f the fighting and mvement part in Peking Opera. Wei Pengyu, a 29-year-ld actr, was attracted t Peking Opera as a child—nt by the music r stries at first, but by the clrful, amazing facial masks that brught the characters t life. At 14, he began training in Peking Opera, especially in wusheng—a male rle type. “Fr me, stepping int the rle f a her is a dream cme true,” he says.
“Playing wuxi isn’t just abut actin—it’s abut expressing the character’s curage, justice (正义), lyalty and strength thrugh mvements,” says Xu Zhuyi, 25, anther male actr.
Later that evening, a classic piece San Cha Ku was played by tw yung actrs, Wu Zeyu and Shu Jiaxing. The viewers were attracted t the great scene and cheered fr the actrs’ excellent martial art mvements.
