When she tld McNee hw hard it culd be t get students excited abut math, her favurite discipline, he made a surprising suggestin: “Why nt thrw in smething they enjy, like sprts?” The idea f mixing basketball and mathematics gt its first sht in 2011, when the nw clleagues — wh had launched a tutring nn-prfit — were invited t run a summer-schl prgram fr kids wh’d failed Grade 9 math at Gerges Secndary Schl.
When the students shwed up fr their first day, they weren’t exactly excited. Over the next few hurs, Mandekic and McNee gave the kids techniques t imprve their shting while als helping them calculate their field-gal percentage — which, in turn, taught them abut fractins and decimal (分数和小数) pints. At the end f the game, the winning team was determined based n which grup had the highest ttal percentage and had dne the mst efficient math. “When the bell rang, they were s fixated n cllecting their data and figuring ut which team wn that they didn’t leave,” says Mandekic. “I realized we might be nt smething.”
The classes, later named BallMatics, sn spread t ther schls. “I was terrible at math,” says Duglas, wh enrlled in a fast-track summer prgram. “But nce I started BallMatics and realized the sprt I lved was directly tied t math, it made me a lt better at it. Every time I played basketball, I was thinking abut math.”
Almst any math prblem, McNee and Mandekic realized, can be taught n the curt. Kids can learn hw t navigate an X-Y grid t find their next shting spt r absrb the basic principles f trignmetry based n the angle at which they release the ball. In 2019, McNec and Mandekic established a private high schl called Uchenna Academy. At the schl, kids with tp basketball skills can study all subjects, train at their sprt and wrk part-time helping ut with the BallMatics afterschl prgrams.
Duglas, nw 20 and earning a degree in educatin believes the schl’s cmmitment t academics is the key reasn it’s been a winner. “If we didn’t d ur wrk, we weren’t playing at the game,” he says, adding that caches wuld bench kids wh didn’t keep up in class. “At Uchenna, we were student athletes, nt athlete students.”

Media literacy (素养) is finally getting sme late-arriving attentin. Whether it’s the increasing awareness f plitical disinfrmatin r the threat f AI, discussins abut media literacy are n the rise. The adptin f media literacy in the classrm, hwever, stagnates.
The driving frce fr prviding kids with media literacy skills ften gets lst in the mral panic ver technlgy and kids. Fear has verrun reasn, and peple can’t decide whether t blame scial media, mbile devices, tech cmpanies, r the Internet. They are cncerned with claims that technlgy and scial media are the causes f teenage mental health issues despite the weak assciatins. In respnse, t many slutins are “strich plicies (鸵鸟政策) ” that want t ban devices and shut dwn scial media but dn’t address mre fundamental issues.
Plicies that set age limits n scial media access and restrict devices during schl t minimize disturbance can be helpful but are incmplete slutins. Scial media didn’t invent bullies (霸凌) r the enrmus effect f peer pressure. Scial media platfrms may be a new battlegrund, but they are nt the surce. Unfrtunately, many current plicies ignre the need t teach kids hw t manage these challenges. There is frighteningly little attentin paid t preparing kids t make gd decisins when they will, unavidably, get nline.
On the bright side, the rapid develpment f AI and increasing attentin t the amunt f misinfrmatin nline have helped nrmalize the acceptance f media literacy as a cre skill. While suggestins t limit inapprpriate device use, increase face-t-face scializatin, and engage in utdr play arc beneficial, they d nt build the cre skills that will keep kids safe ffline and are fundamental t well-being and life success: gd citizenship, self-awareness and self-cntrl. Thse things take teaching, whether yu are nline r utside.
Media literacy is an essential life skill that, nce learned, can be applied t any cntent. While waiting fr public educatin t catch up, parents and educatrs can build media literacy skills at hme with numerus resurces, ranging frm family technlgy cntracts and discussin guides t easy activities that can be dne at hme with kids.

It’s a classic cmplaint in relatinships, especially rmantic nes: “She said she was kay with me frgetting her birthday! Then why is she thrwing dishes in the kitchen? Are the tw things related? ”
The answer is YES. Cmmunicatin is mre than wrds. It’s hw thse wrds are said, the tne, the rder, even the chice f a particular wrd. It’s multi-dimensinal, as explred by Deirdre Wilsn and Dan Sperber in Meaning and Relevance. Cnsider the fllwing example: Peter gt angry and Mary left; Mary left and Peter gt angry. Thugh identical in wrds, their meanings differ cmpletely. The first ne may have us thinking: Ww, Peter must get angry ften if Mary leaves. The secnd sentence suggests that Peter wants mre frm Mary. Same wrds — a ttally different cntext.
Human language is nt a cde (编码). True cdes have a ne-t-ne relatinship with meaning. One sund, ne definitin. This is what we see with animals. Wilsn and Sperber explain that “cded cmmunicatin wrks best when emitter (发出者) and receiver share exactly the same cde. ” Nt s fr humans. We cmmunicate mre than the definitins f ur wrds wuld suggest. This is inferential cmmunicatin, and it means that we understand nt nly the wrds spken, but the cntext in which they are spken. .
Irny (反语) is a great example f hw pwerfully we can cmmunicate cntext with a few simple wrds. It is mre than just stating the ppsite. Fr example, when Mary says, after a bring party, “That was fun”, she is neither saying literally that the party was fun nr saying “irnically” that the party was bring. Rather, she is expressing an emtin. Three wrds replace paragraphs, shwcasing language’s efficiency.
Wilsn and Sperber cncluded that human language develped and became s pwerful because f tw unique abilities f humans: language and the pwer t try t interpret mental states f thers. We lk fr cntext fr the wrds we hear. And we shuld be very gd at absrbing this cntext t infer meaning.
12 What des the cmplaint in Paragraph 1 mainly indicate?
A. The incnsistence between wrds and meaning.B. The imprtance f remembering vital mments.
C. The necessity f straightfrward cmmunicatin.D. The unavidability f argument in a cuple's life.
13 What may make human language different frm true cdes?
A. The cntext included in understanding meanings.
B. The definitins made by wrds in cmmunicatin.
C. The cded cmmunicatin between emitter and receiver.
D. The ne-t-ne relatinship between wrd and meaning.
14. Hw des Mary’s statement “That was fun” illustrate abut irny?
A. It simplifies language t save time.B. It cvers the true feelings f peple.
C. It needs wrdy explanatins t make sense.D. It uses fewer wrds fr cmplex meanings.
15. What des the authr suggest in cmmunicatin?
A. Fcusing n the ppsite.B. Taking language literally.
C. Reading beynd the wrds.D. Aviding using irnic tnes.
