Like many new graduates, I left university full f hpe fr the future but with n real idea f what I wanted t d. My degree, with hnrs, in English literature had nt really prepared me fr anything practical. I knew I wanted t make a difference in the wrld smehw, but I had n idea hw t d that. Neither did my family.
Eventually, hwever, I wn the supprt f my family, and I sent in all the paperwrk needed fr applicatin. After cuntless interviews and presentatins, I managed t stand ut amng the candidates and survive the test alne. Several mnths later, I finally received a call asking me t reprt fr duty. I wuld be ging t a small village near Abuja, Nigeria. Where? What? Nigeria? I had n idea. But I was abut t find ut.
After cmpleting my training, I was sent t the village that was small and desperately in need f prper accmmdatin. Thugh the lcal villagers were pr, they ffered their hmes, fd, and hearts as if I were their wn family. I was asked t lead a small team f lcal peple in building a new schlhuse. Fr the next year r s, I taught in that same schlhuse. But I smetimes think I learned mre frm my students than they did frm me.
Smetime during that perid, I realized that all thse things that had seemed s strange r unusual t me n lnger did, thugh I did nt get anywhere with the lcal language, and returned t the United States a different man. The Lighthuse Prject had changed my life frever.

Hadeda ibises, knwn as “ African alarm clcks ” fr their lud calls, have lng legs and thin beaks (鸟喙) and shiny feathers n their wings. Histrically restricted t nrtheastern Suth Africa, hadedas have significantly expanded their range t many urban areas.
Varius ibises use remte-tuch t detect mvements f prey (猎物) in the sil and lcate their hidden place. This ability is facilitated by a sensry rgan in their
beaks, called the bill-tip rgan, which develped during the time f the dinsaurs. My recent research cnfirmed that hadedas have this“ sixth sense ” and fund it is clsely tied t sil misture (湿度) levels.
We cnducted sensry tests with hadedas in bird cages. We presented them with bxes f sil cntaining buried wrms (虫), masking any sunds with white nise and mixing dead wrms int the sil t remve scent cues (气 味 线 索 ). The birds cnsistently fund live wrms faster than dead nes, indicating they are able t sense mvements f prey and use remte-tuch t find them.
Further testing revealed that hadedas fund wrms mre quickly in wetter sils. If the sil was t dry, they lst this ability and had t rely n randm searching. These findings suggest that the hadedas’ expansin in Suth Africa is related t increased artificial watering systems. They require wet sil t use remte-tuch effectively, which culd explain their absence in dry regins. Drughts and heatwaves, expected t wrsen with climate change, culd threaten their ppulatin by making prey detectin mre challenging.
The study highlights the brader implicatins fr ther remte-tuch hunting birds, many f which are already endangered. As sil misture levels decrease, these birds culd becme mre at risk, stressing the imprtance f cnsidering sensry requirements in cnservatin effrts.
      28. What d we knw abut hadeda ibises?
      A. They are knwn fr shiny feathers.
      B. They barely see any rise in numbers.
      C. They recall images f the dinsaurs.
      D. They have a specialized sensry rgan.
      29. Why were white nise and dead wrms used in the experiment?
      A. T get a mre reliable result. B. T add experimental items.
      C. T cpy natural habitats. D. T avid disturbing the subjects.
      30. What des the research suggest abut the impact f climate change n hadedas?
      A. Climate change will decrease their reliance n sil misture.
      B. Drughts culd make it mre difficult fr them t find prey.
      C. Increased rainfall will help them relcate t urbanized areas.
      D. Rising temperatures culd increase their feeding efficiency.
      31. What des the text mainly talk abut?
      A. The specialty f hadedas’ rgans. B. The masters f dry land hunting.
      C. Hadedas’ prey detectin in wet sil. D. Hadedas ibises’ urban expansin.
      D
A new study, led by Dr Steven Stagg f Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), fund the benefits f letter-spacing and clured verlays (涂层) amng a grup f dyslexic (诵 读 困 难 的 ) and nn-dyslexic children. It discvered that text with increased space between letters prvided a benefit fr bth grups f children. On average, the dyslexia grup shwed a 13% increase in reading speed, while the cmparisn grup f nn-dyslexic children shwed a 5% increase in reading speed.
The study invlved 59 children aged between 11 and 15,32 f whm had dyslexia, with 27 nn-dyslexic children frming a cntrl grup. The participants were frm six UK schls in Cambridgeshire, Hertfrdshire and Lndn.
Participants read fur texts with either standard r extra-large letter-spacing, bth with and withut a clured verlay. The children were instructed t read these texts ut lud while being recrded. The recrdings were used t measure the number f errrs they made— specifically missed wrds, added wrds, wrng wrds, and
prnunciatin—as well as the participants’ reading time.
In additin t imprving reading speed f children with and withut dyslexia, the larger letter-spacing als resulted in a significant reductin in the number f wrds being missed by the children with dyslexia. Dr Stagg said“, We believe that extra-large letter-spacing reduces what is knwn as the ‘ crwding effect’, which can prevent the recgnitin f letters and reduce reading speed. ”
When viewed in the cntext f previus research, the findings strngly suggest that teaching prfessinals shuld be cnfident that all children will be helped by increased letter-spacing in reading materials. It’s a relatively simple change fr teachers t make when they prduce handuts and exercises, and children with dyslexia wn’t feel singled ut by the intrductin f specially adapted reading materials, as this change is smething that everyne can benefit frm.
The study shwed clred verlays didn’t affect reading speed r errr reductin in children. Despite this, Dr. Stagg recmmends using them, as they might imprve reading stamina (耐力).
      32. What des the new study fcus n accrding t Paragraph 1?
      A. The features f dyslexia.
      B. The gap in children’s reading ability.
      C. Ways f examining children ’ s cmprehensin.
      D. Certain factrs helping imprve children’s reading ability.
      33. What did the researchers d during the study?
      A. They asked children t dcument the reading material.
      B. They taught children sme reading skills.
      C. They studied the recrdings f children’s reading.
      D. They bserved children’s perfrmances in class.
      34. Hw are children with dyslexic affected by the “ crwding effect ” ?
      A. They may read materials faster than usual.
      B. They may make mre mistakes when reading.
      C. They are frced t reflect n themselves mre.
      D. They are willing t spend mre time reading.

      A. The significance f previus dyslexia children research.
      B. The necessity f paying attentin t children with dyslexia.
      C. The suggestins and expectatins frm teaching prfessinals.
      D. The practicability and benefits f specially adapted reading materials.

A recent study has revealed that the famus brnze-winged lin in St. Mark’s Square, Venice, may have riginated in 8th-century China. Thrugh metallurgical (冶 金 学 的 ) analysis, a multidisciplinary team f experts discvered that much f the brnze 56 (use) in the lin came frm sutheastern China.

When Judy was yunger, she thught that her grandmther was the best ck in the entire wrld. Every time she visited her grandmther with her family she wuld be treated t lts f delicius fd — buttery shrtbread ckies and plates f crispy cheese crackers t snack n; piles f pancakes fr breakfast; glden fried chickens and thick, hearty sups fr dinner. N ne wuld ever leave hungry r sad when they visited grandmther’s huse.
But, as Judy grew lder, she started t ntice that her grandmther had begun t ck less and less. The cmplicated meals grew simpler, and the visits t her grandmther’s beautiful life-filled hme grew fewer. Eventually, Samantha’s parents tld her the truth: her grandmther had arthritis (关节炎) in her hands, which meant it was t painful fr her t ck the elegant dishes.
“Why dn’t we visit grandmther and just get fd frm a restaurant?” she asked. It seemed t her t cruel just t visit when her grandmther culd ck fr them and t pay n visit when her grandmther was sick.
Her parents smiled, appreciating their daughter’s kind heart, and tld her they had suggested this but the idea had been rejected, “Yur grandmther lves cking. It saddens her t be reminded that she can’t share her fd any mre because f her illness.” Judy tld her parents she understd, but she silently determined t find a way t help.
A few weeks later, Judy stpped by her grandmther’s huse t deliver sme grceries. As she carefully put away the bxes and cans in the kitchen cabinets, Judy discvered smething she had never seen befre. Sitting n ne f the highest shelves was a small wden bx.
