Cral reefs (珊瑚礁) are amng the mst prductive ecsystems in the wrld. They’re als in serius danger——climate change and ther threats are killing them ff. But researchers have cme up with an inventin they think culd help the reefs: 3D-printed crals.
At the heart f reef ecsystems lies a symbisis (共生关系) between crals and algae (藻类). Crals use light and they’re phtsynthesizing (光合作用). The algae inside crals’ tissues (组织) make use f the light t generate energy, and that energy is then transferred t the cral animal hst. That animal hst, in return, transfers certain by-prducts t the algae, s they have a symbisis ging n.
This bnd between algae and crals is what makes reefs s incredibly prductive.Because f this symbisis, crals have evlved cmplex skeletal (骨骼的) and tissue structures fr cllecting sunlight which usually fades rapidly. Thrugh the skeletn, light is pumped and guided int deeper, therwise shaded areas.
Scientists cpied sme tricks that crals use. They imaged crals t analyze their skeletal and tissue makeup and then used a 3D biprinter t build a cmplicated structure that mimics real crals. The printed crals were made f bimaterials like cellulse (纤维素) and had algae planted in them.
The researchers replicated (复制) cral structure s well that the algae grew very quickly—— up t 100 times mre densely than they nrmally grw in the lab. The 3D-printed creatin culd be used as a medium t grw algae t prduce bienergy and als as a tl fr studying the cral-algae symbisis.
Of curse, there are many ther ways this technlgy can be further scaled and imprved t create smething like artificial crals in the future. S this is just the first step, where they created the animal hst, but they are nw cntinuing t further replicate this animal-algal symbisis and develping mdel systems. Eventually, it wuld be nice that this can have direct applicatins in cral reef restratin.
8. What is the functin f the algae inside crals’ tissues?
A. T perfrm phtsynthesis.
B. T pump light int shaded areas.
C. T prduce energy needed by their hst.
D. T build cmplex skeletal structures.
9. What d algae get in the symbitic relatinship with crals?
A. Strnger tissues.B. Certain by-prducts.
C. Bimaterials like cellulse.D. An animal hst.
10. Scientists use 3D-printed cral structure t .
A. make a study f the cral-algae symbisis
B. strengthen the bnd between algae and crals
C. change cean cnditins fr crals t survive
D. remve the harmful algae inside the tissues f crals
11. What is the best title f this passage?
A. Fantastic Cexistence f Crals and Algae
B. Crals Evlving Symbisis t Avid Extinctin
C. Cral Reefs: Prductive but Endangered Ecsystem
D. 3D-Printed Technlgy Hpefully Saving Cral Reefs
