She fills the days with wrk, cleaning the windws, mwing the lawn and sweeping the staircase f the 90-ft lighthuse twer. She reads a lt and has watched a lt f sunsets. And she enjys every minute. “It's a relief t be ut n the island,” Ms. Snwman, 70, said. When she's by herself, “the wheels stp spinning.” Her time alne is restrative.
But nt everyne feels the same way abut slitude(独处). Hw we feel abut time alne is largely dependent n whether we've chsen it, said Virginia Thmas, an assistant prfessr f psychlgy at Middlebury Cllege wh studies slitude. “Peple wh pursue slitude f their wn free will tend t reprt that it feels full—— like they' re full f ideas r thughts r things t d,” Dr. Thmas said. In this way, it's distinct frm lneliness, a negative state in which yu' re discnnected frm ther peple and it feels empty.
The key is t see slitude as a chice, nt a punishment. Jenn Drummnd, a muntaineer in Park City, Utah, has spent a lt f time alne as she trains t becme the first wman t climb the Seven Secnd Summits, the secnd highest—— and generally mre difficult—— muntains n each cntinent. In the jungle f Rme's rads, there is an invasive species. Native t the fairways but nw racing abut ancient squares, it has made residents quite restless. Hundreds f glf carts(车)laded with turists race arund the streets f the eternal city, annying taxi drivers, blcking bus lanes and cnfusing city fficials wh cannt wrk ut hw t ban them.
“It's madness—— yu get eight r nine f them hlding up traffic when they pull up at the Bcca della Verità where parking is frbidden,” said Rme's transprt chief, Eugeni Patanè. “We wuld need a plice fficer n every crner t stp this.”
The carts, which ften cme with a driver and are favred by American and British turists, are the latest evidence f verturism in Rme. Despite mving annyingly slwly n the city's streets, the carts are able t avid plans t get rid f them because f a lphle(漏洞) in the law. Classified as “nn-typical vehicles” under Article 59 f the Italian Highway Cde, the glf carts must be registered by their peratrs at the twn hall, which then has 30 days t apprve their use.
The prblem, said Patanè, was that during that 30-day perid the carts are allwed t perate. “We have had 33 applicatins and rejected all but ne, but at the end f the 30 days they simply apply again and get anther 30 days in which they can perate befre being rejected again, and s n,” he said.
S what is it like t drive a cart in Rme? A man by a drinks stand in the Villa Brghese park put me behind the wheel f a fur-seater fr €30 an hur. “We cannt keep up with demand,” he said, “Turists see them n the streets and want ne.”
Once n Via del Tritne, the traffic came t a standstill. Then I studied the cart ahead f me in the traffic, driven by a tur guide and carrying a cuple with their tw children. Bred by the traffic jam, they started arguing. Rather than rushing frm mnument(古迹) t mnument, they were getting the true Rman experience—— lsing their cl while stuck in traffic.
28. What is the city fficials' feeling abut the crazy glf carts?
A. Pride. B. Helplessness. C. Guilt. D. Thrill.
29. What is a lphle in Italy's traffic law accrding t the text?

A. Turists benefit a lt frm ppular glf carts.
B. Crazy glf carts cause Rme's traffic prblems.
C. Turists are welcmed by the residents f Rme.

That satisfying feeling after dmscrlling thrugh endless TikTk vides r impulsively shpping nline mimics the relief f scratching an itch. This is dpamine(多巴胺) at wrk——a brain chemical respnsible fr feelings f reward and accmplishment. Whether engaging in viral vides r new hbbies, dpamine creates a sense f achievement that keeps us cming back fr mre.
Hwever, reliance n these dpamine hits can lead t lasting brain changes, particularly in teenagers and yung adults. This is what my team and I at Lndn Suthbank University study. We investigated which brain regins and cnnectins change due t increased scial media engagement—— r “dpa-mining”, as we call it.
Using scial media lights up the same parts f yur brain as ther addictins, such as drugs, alchl and gambling. Scientists have fund that every time yu get a “like”, r even watch a vide yu enjy, yur brain's reward system gets activated. This is the same system that makes peple feel pleasure when they win mney r eat their favrite snack.
But here's the catch: the mre yu use scial media, the harder it can be fr yur brain t resist it. It's like training yur brain t lng fr thse dpamine hits—— just like an addictin.
Ever wnder why scial media feels s addictive? It's because yur brain starts trimming neurns(修剪神经元), a bit like cutting away extra branches n a tree, t make the “reward pathway” faster.
This sunds efficient, but it's nt great. The shrter pathway means yur brain can “feel” rewards faster, but we knw frm research that it can als make yu mre excited and less able t stp yurself frm scrlling. Over time, this trimming can cut dwn the size f certain brain areas, which are key fr cntrlling emtins and making decisins.
32. What des the underlined wrd “dmscrlling” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
A. Scrlling thrugh a lt f negative news.
B. Scrlling thrugh varius vides fr creatin.
C. Scrlling lng thrugh scial media aimlessly.
D. Scrlling thrugh specific cntents t gain knwledge.
33. What des the authr's team at Lndn Suthbank University study?
A. Ways t engage in new hbbies.
B. Dpamine prductin in the brain.
C. Brain regins affected by scial media.
D. Similarities amng different addictins.
34. What is the result f the brain trimming?
A. It enables peple t make wise decisins.
B. It helps peple better cntrl their emtins.
C. It strengthens the links between brain regins.
D. It makes the size f certain brain areas smaller.
35. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The functins f dpamine in the brain.
B. The benefits f scial media engagement.
C. The explratin int brain's reward system.
D. The lasting effects f scial media n the brain.

Hw Natural Smells Affect Well-being

“Our findings are especially relevant when we want t appear mre sincere and 59(strength) scial ties, such as at the beginning f a relatinship r when we need t make a gd impressin,” said lead researcher David Fang. The research, 60 (publish) in the Jurnal f Experimental Psychlgy: General, analyzed cnversatins frm 37 cuntries and mre than5,300 texters. The cnversatins, including nes with and 61 abbreviatins, came frm messages n chatrms.
