Des adversity (逆境) warm hearts r harden them? Recently, my graduate student Daniel and I set ut t explre the relatinship between adversity and cmpassin (同情).
We cnducted a study nline and reached mre than 200 peple frm all walks f life. After asking them abut the hardships they faced and hw ften they experienced cmpassin, we ffered them the chance t dnate sme f the mney they were abut t be paid fr taking part in the study t help peple in need. The result shwed that thse wh had faced serius adversities in life feel mre cmpassin fr suffering peple. And as a result, they dnated mre mney.
Nw, if experiencing any type f hardship can make a persn mre cmpassinate, yu might assume that the cmpassin wuld be reached when smene has experienced the exact misfrtune that anther persn is facing. Interestingly, this turns ut t be dead wrng.
In an article recently published in the Jurnal f Persnality and Scial Psychlgy, the Kellgg Schl f Management prfessr Lran Nrdgren and his team fund that the human mind refuses t wrk as usual when it cmes t remembering its wn past hardships: it regularly makes them appear t be less painful than they actually were. Therefre, recalling a bad experience in yur wn past may make yu underestimate (低估) the difficulty f thers’ challenges. Yu vercame it, yu think s shuld he. The result? Yu lack cmpassin.
Our findings, taken tgether with thse f Prfessr Nrdgren and his team, are that living thrugh hardships desn’t either warm hearts r harden them; it des bth. Knwing suffering in life usually enhances the cmpassin we feel fr thers, except when the suffering invlves specific painful events that we knw all t well.
      12. Which f the fllwing is TRUE abut the authr’s study?

      B. Peple suffering frm adversity are easy t break dwn.
      C. Peple tend t remember their hardships easily.
      D. Hardships lead t peple’s lack f cmpassin.
      15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
      A. The Hidden Pwer f Cmpassin
      B. Cmpassin: A Gift frm Persnal Adversity
      C. Surprising link f Adversity and Cmpassin
      D. Adversity: A Pathway t Deeper Cmpassin
B 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第一段第二句“Recently, my graduate student Daniel and I set ut t explre the relatinship between adversity and cmpassin (同情).
根据第三段“Nw, if experiencing any type f hardship can make a persn mre cmpassinate, yu might assume that the cmpassin wuld be reached when smene has experienced the exact misfrtune that anther persn is facing. Interestingly, this turns ut t be dead wrng. 故选A项。
根据第四段后四句“Therefre, recalling a bad experience in yur wn past may make yu underestimate (低估) the difficulty f thers’ challenges. Yu vercame it, yu think; s shuld he. The result? Yu lack cmpassin.
