In the US, trnades are respnsible fr many deaths and injuries each year. Althugh they ccur quite frequently, trnades are difficult t predict. Why? Trnades develp frm strms, but nly sme strms are likely t becme trnades. Scientists dn’t knw where and when a strm will tuch the grund and turn int a trnad. Tday, the warning time fr a trnad is usually just 13 minutes.

This tl measures things like a trnad’s temperature, humidity (湿度), and wind I speed. With this infrmatin, Samaras can learn what causes trnades t develp. If meterlgists (气象学家) understand this, they can warn peple abut trnades sner and save lives.
Hw des Samaras hunt trnades? It’s nt easy. First, he has t find ne. Trnades are t small t see using weather satellites. S Samaras can’t rely n these tls t find a trnad. Instead he waits fr trnades t develp. Every May and June, Samaras drives abut 40,000 kilmetres acrss an area knwn as Trnad Alley, lking and hping t spt a trnad.
Once Samaras sees a trnad, the chase begins. But a trnad is hard t fllw. Sme trnades change directin several times-fr example, mving east and then west and then east again. When Samaras finally gets near a trnad, he puts the turtle prbe n the grund. Being this clse t a trnad is terrifying. Debris (碎片) is flying in the air. Then wind is blwing at high speed. He must get away quickly.

We knw that ur pet dgs and cats can recgnise ur faces, but ur pet fish? A team f scientists frm Britain and Australia have discvered that archerfish (喷水鱼) can distinguish human faces!
This marks the first time that a species f fish has shwn such an ability. Such abilities have been previusly shwn in birds, but unlike fish, they have been prven t have structures similar t the necrtex (大脑新皮层), the researchers added.
“Being able t distinguish between a large number f human faces is a surprisingly difficult task,” Dr Newprt said, “mainly due t the fact that all human faces share the same basic features.”
During their experiments, Dr Newprt and her c-wrkers presented archerfish with tw images f human faces, and trained them t chse ne by spitting jets (喷射流) f water at that picture. Next, the fish were presented with the familiar face and several that were unfamiliar, and were able t crrectly pick the ne that they had been trained t recgnise, even when features such as head shape and clur were remved frm the selected pictures.
In the first experiment, the archerfish were tasked with picking the previusly learnt face frm a grup f 44 new nes, which they did with 81% accuracy. In the secnd, the researchers decided t make things a little harder. They tk the pictures and made them black and white and evened ut the head shapes. Yu wuld think that wuld shck the fish. But n, they were able t pick the familiar face even then-and with mre accuracy: 86%!
“Fish have a simpler brain than humans and entirely lack the sectin f the brain that humans use fr recgnising faces. Despite this, fish may still be capable f finding the face they are trained t recgnise,” Dr Newprt said. “The fact that archerfish can learn this task suggests that cmplex brains are nt necessarily needed t recgnise human faces.”
      12. What did the scientists train archerfish t d in the experiments?
      A. Cmmunicate with humans.B. Distinguish different clurs.
      C. Spit water n a familiar face.D. Ignre human facial features.
      13. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined phrase “evened ut” in paragraph 5?
      A. nrmalisedB. standardisedC. cmplicatedD. clarified
      14. What des the research shw?
      A. Archerfish are cleverer than ther fishes.
      B. All fishes can be trained t recgnise human faces.
      C. Cmplex brains are nt necessary fr facial recgnitin.
      D. It is very difficult fr animals t recgnise human faces.
      15. Where is the text mst likely frm?
      A. A bilgy textbk.B. A medical reprt.C. An animal TV prgramme.D. A science magazine.

D It is very difficult fr animals t recgnise human faces.
      15. Where is the text mst likely frm?
      A. A bilgy textbk.B. A medical reprt.C. An animal TV prgramme.D. A science magazine.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据第四段中的“During their experiments, Dr Newprt and her c-wrkers presented archerfish with tw images f human faces, and trained them t chse ne by spitting jets (喷射流) f water at that picture.(在实验中,Newprt博士和她的同事们向喷水鱼展示了两张人脸图像,并训练它们通过向这张照片喷水来选择其中一张)”可知,研究人员训练喷水鱼往熟悉的人脸图片上喷水,故选C。
第五段介绍的是具体的实验数据,画线短语所在句“They tk the pictures and made them black and white and evened ut the head shapes.”
根据文章最后一段“‘The fact that archerfish can learn this task suggests that cmplex brains are nt necessarily needed t recgnise human faces.’(‘射水鱼能够学会这项任务的事实表明,识别人脸并不一定需要复杂的大脑。’)”
根据全文内容,结合第一段中“A team f scientists frm Britain and Australia have discvered that archerfish (喷水鱼) can distinguish human faces!(来自英国和澳大利亚的一组科学家发现,喷水鱼可以分辨人脸!)”
