Much f the methane (甲烷) in air cmes frm human activities. But methane has natural surces t. Micrbes (微生物) in wetland sils and trees als release methane.
Vincent Gauci, an envirnmental scientist, knew the trees in wet places, like the trpics, give ff methane frm their trunks. Then, he wanted t study its release frm trees in drier sils. “We were surprised t see the exact ppsite,” says Gauci. The trees were actually taking in methane.
Trees taking in and releasing gases is gas exchange. Researchers typically measure methane exchange lw n the trunk, near the grund. But Gauci’s team measured higher up n the tree, thinking this wuld better estimate hw much methane the whle tree might send ut.
Gauci’s tw students measured methane release frm trees in the UK and Panama, setting up a gas-exchange chamber n a tree t mnitr hw much methane it’s absrbing r sending ut. They expected methane emissins wuld drp as they measured higher up the trunk. Their guess at first seemed t hld. Higher up the trunk, methane release dipped. But at chest height, the numbers drpped belw zer — here, trees were absrbing methane.
T further check their findings, the team analyzed trees frm fur regins — Brazil, Sweden, Panama and the UK. The result was the same at all sites. Overall, the trees tk up mre methane than they released. Using data frm the fur sites, the team estimated all the wrld’s frests may be absrbing 50 millin tns f methane every year.
The scientists believe methane is taken in by micrbes that live in tree bark. On average, trees absrbed mre methane than they released, with faster uptake in warmer climates.
Gauci says, “Peple release far mre methane than what nature can remve. S we have t cut back n fssil fuels. Trees are even mre imprtant fr climate than we thught. We must be aware f the need fr immediate actin t safeguard this vital natural resurce.”

A. Trees can remve all methane.B. Prtecting trees is crucial.
C. Methane has n natural surces.D. Methane is imprtant t climate.
11. Which f the fllwing may be the best title fr the text?
A. Trees may be big climate heresB. Gauci fund ut trees’ grwth secret

When radilgist Puneh Razavi reads a patient’s chest X-ray, she hunts fr blips (光点) in the X-ray image that culd indicate breast cancer. Then, a secnd reader, artificial intelligence (AI), lks at the image, and the tw cmpare results.

What can be extremely challenging fr humans may be a ripe pprtunity fr AI. With massive quantities f high-quality digital images, scientists can train AI cmputer mdels t seek ut specific features in a persn’s scan, like signs f lung disease n an X-ray. Such mdels may help imprve radilgists’ accuracy and efficiency, s dctrs can priritize cases based n which nes may need immediate attentin.
The mdel isn’t ready fr widespread rll-ut. The researchers first need t train it n mre data. “With t many variables that might cnfuse it, the researchers estimate that mre training plus trials t cnfirm the mdel wrks culd take five years,” says Julia Vgt, a cmputer scientist at ETH Zurich.
“Using AI tls thughtfully culd ultimately make health care mre efficient,” Vgt says. “AI is nt magic r perfect, but it has the ptential t slve sme prblems. By easing wrklads, fr example, AI culd give dctrs mre time with their patients. That wuld be a huge achievement.”
12. What is the main functin f AI in Puneh Razavi’s wrk?
A. T cllect data fr research.B. T train dctrs in imaging.
C. T detect breast cancer indicatrs.D. T find ut the blips in her images.
13. What des Langltz’s busy Saturday mrning shw?
A. His devtin t wrk.B. His excellent medical skills.
C. A lack f dctrs in the lcal hspital.D. The desire fr AI’s applicatin in his wrk.
14. What des the underlined wrd “rll-ut” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Reactin.B. Launch.C. Research.D. Attentin.
15. What is Vgt’s attitude t AI?
A. Objective.B. Uncertain.C. Negative.D. Uncaring.
