One f my earliest memries is f my father sitting me dwn at ur kitchen table with canvases, paints, and
brushes. He taught me hw t blend clrs and use different materials. Whenever we felt inspired, we set ut all
ur materials and painted what ur hearts desired.
My father grew up in a small village in the Dminican Republic. Despite nt having many materials available,
he created art with whatever he had. My father saved his mney t buy paints and clred pencils t draw n the
walls arund his hme. When he was 15, he arrived in America alne and stayed with his aunt in Flrida fr a
while befre finishing high schl in New Yrk with anther aunt. He studied very hard. Eventually, my father was
      able t btain his citizenship.
As I gt lder he cntinued t give me lessns, teaching me different brush strkes and hw t take care f
my art supplies. He taught me t find beauty in everything and everyne arund me. I grew t lve drawing peple,
as I culd highlight the physical features that make everyne unique and beautiful.
It wasn’t until I began lking carefully int my father’s paintings and the wrk f ppular artists n

My father nticed that I had been drawing and painting less and tld me, “Mia, yu shuld auditin fr the
schl. I wish I’d had an pprtunity t study art like this when I was a kid.” My father’s bravery and strength are
things that I desire t have. S ver the next few mnths, I wrked n my prtfli. Lking back at my pictures, I
can see hw much I have imprved since then. The schl must have seen ptential in my drawings because I gt

in! It was eye-pening t attend a cllege that specializes in the arts. I learned t embrace my individuality and my
talent. I have becme mre pen abut sharing my artwrks and receiving cnstructive criticism, which raises my
      self-belief in my art.

When yu think f 3D printing, yu may think f small bjects. But three cmpanies are wrking tgether t
print smething much bigger. They’re using a giant 3D printer t create what they say is the first tw-strey
      3D-printed huse in the US.
Usually, 3D printing invlves a machine building smething by putting dwn many layers f a material —
ften ht plastic. When the material hardens, the layers stick tgether t create a finished bject. The methd here
      is similar, but uses cncrete.
Leslie Lk, wh designed the huse, says there are special challenges invlved in printing a tw-strey huse.
One f the biggest is the size f the machine needed fr the building. The 3D printer in Hustn is massive. It
      weighs ver 12 tns.
Ms Lk says printing the huse will take the massive machine abut 330 hurs. That’s abut eight nrmal
      第 5页/共 12页
wrk weeks. Thugh it’s a tw-year prject, the team isn’t in a rush. “We are nt trying t beat the clck,” says
Hikmat Zerbe, wh wrks fr a cnstructin cmpany called CIVE. Instead, they’re using the huse as a “big
labratry” t learn mre abut 3D printing huses. They want t see hw the cncrete reacts “under different
weather cnditins”. They als want t figure ut hw t make 3D printing faster and cheaper. Mr Zerbe says that
currently, 3D printing a huse with cncrete csts mre than building a huse with wd.
With time, Mr Zerbe expects the csts f 3D printing huses t g dwn. He thinks printers will imprve and
make it easier t create mre huses quickly. The 3D-printed cncrete huses are strnger and hld up better in
serius strms than huses built with wd. This can save mney in the lng run. Since the machine is ding the
building, fewer wrkers are needed, which als saves mney.
      8. What d we knw abut the first 3D-printed huse?
      A. It’s newly-designed by Mr Zerbe. B. It is created by a huge machine.
      C. It is built with ht plastic. D. It is a building with three flrs.
      9. What d the underlined wrds “beat the clck” in the furth paragraph prbably mean?
      A. Accmplish smething quickly. B. Hit smething suddenly.
      C. Cncentrate n the task. D. Invent smething special.
      10. Why will the first 3D-printed huse be cmpleted in a lng time?
      A. T better learn the new technlgy. B. T save the cst f building.
      C. T free labur cmpletely. D. T make the machine have breaks.
      11. What des Mr Zerbe think f 3D printing in huses?
      A. Risky. B. Harmful. C. Prmising. D. Changeable.

Accrding t a study published this week, habitual napping (打盹) appears t be assciated with a large brain
vlume (体积) in adults althugh experts stressed that further research was needed. It reduces the cst caused frm
the lst time and the fatigue-related errrs. The wrk fllwed previus studies that suggested a brief nap culd
      imprve peple’s ability t learn.
Arianna Huffingtn, a c-funder f Huff Pst and the funder and chief executive f Thrive Glbal, said,
“Given the latest science n the effectiveness f napping and the clear link between emplyees feeling well rested
and their prductivity, it’s lng past time that businesses embrace shrt naps at wrk.”
Sme businesses, including Thrive Glbal, have already intrduced facilities fr emplyees t take naps.
Ggle intrduced sleep pds as far back as 2014 and cmpanies like Nike and Ben & Jerry’s intrduced nap
      第 6页/共 12页
rms. The practice has even been adpted by the NHS, with a grwing number f hspitals intrducing sleep pds
fr staff in an effrt t help them get mre rest. Emplyees, it seems, are enthusiastic. Sean Greenwd, f Ben &
Jerry’s, said, “If a quick nap gets emplyees mre invlved and creative, we’re happy t prvide that fr ur team
      members.”
Unfrtunately, the practice f napping still suffers frm ur cllective cncept that sleep equals weakness and
laziness. Hwever, the perfrmance-enhancing benefits f naps have been n secret t many leaders thrughut
histry. It als gives the higher-ups the chance t acknwledge the 24/7 culture and cme up with tp-dwn
slutins that encurage wrkers t take care f themselves in and ut f wrk.
While sleep experts stressed that a daytime nap culd be beneficial, they said it was crucial t get enugh
shut-eye (睡眠) at the end f a day. It is the late stage f sleep, smetimes missed by early risers, that strengthens
the nerve circuits that make fr learning and memry, allwing the brain t make and cnslidate new neutral
cnnectins. Additinally, priritizing sufficient sleep during the regular nightly sleep perid is essential fr verall
      well-being.
      12. What is paragraph 1 mainly abut?
      A. Wrk stress. B. A research finding. C. Learning abilities. D. The brain vlume.
      13. What is Arianna Huffingtn’s attitude tward napping?
      A. Indifferent. B. Unclear. C. Apprving. D. Critical.
      14. Why are s many cmpanies mentined in the passage?
      A. T present the current situatin. B. T praise creative emplyees.
      C. T cmpare the differences. D. T advcate enugh rest.
      15. What will pssibly be discussed in the paragraph that fllws?
      A. The benefits f memry. B. The imprtance f napping.
      C. The secrets t well-being. D. The appraches t shut-eye.
