In the study cnducted at Virginia Plytechnic Institute and State University, fur vlunteers were asked t wear a sleeve befre and after washing with fur different brands f sap. The researchers then watched female msquites-as nly females feed n bld- landing n the fabric sample t shw their preference. They fund that sme peple washing with sme brands f sap, increased their attractiveness t msquites, while washing with ther brands f sap tended t repel(驱除)msquites. The repellent effect f sme sap may be due t its ccnut scent, as ccnut il is knwn t act as a natural msquit repellent.
The reasn behind this attractin is believed t be related t msquites’ sugar intake. When msquites are nt feeding n bld, they add their diet with plant juice r sweet water frm flwers. “The fact that we are taking thse flwery and fruity smells and putting them n ur bdies means that nw the same bject smells like a flwer and a persn at the same time,” said Clément Vinauger, wh led the study. “It wuld be like waking up and smelling the smell f cffee and bread. Very attractive.”
Interestingly, the effects f the sap varied amng peple, pssibly due t the interactin (相互作用)between the sap and each persn’s unique bdy scent. “It’s remarkable that the same persn that is extremely attractive t msquites when he is unwashed can becme even mre attractive t msquites with ne sap, and then becme repellent t msquites with anther sap,” said Vinauger. By adding certain parts f the DNA frm shining mushrms t rdinary tbacc plants, the researchers were able t create plants that culd make their wn luciferins. The scientists reprted that the light was abut 10 times brighter than in earlier shining plants.
The researchers believe that shining plants culd help scientists learn mre abut the way plants wrk. Fr example, the mving patterns r waves f light in the plants may shw activities in plants that nrmally can’t be seen. The shining als helps reveal hw plants may be affected by things arund them.
