An artificial intelligence can decde (解码) wrds and sentences frm brain activity with surprising accuracy.
Using nly a few secnds f brain activity data, the AI guesses what a persn has heard. It lists the crrect answer

Develped by the parent cmpany f Facebk, Meta, the AI culd eventually be used t help thusands f

Mst existing technlgies t help such patients cmmunicate require risky brain surgeries t put in electrdes

cmputatinal tl, als knwn as a language mdel, t detect wrds and sentences n 56,000 hurs f speech
recrdings frm 53 languages. The team applied an AI with this language mdel t databases frm fur institutins
that included brain activity frm 169 vlunteers. In these databases, participants listened t varius stries and
sentences, while the peple’s brains were scanned by magnetencephalgraphy (MEG) (脑磁图).
Then with the help f a cmputatinal methd that helps accunt fr physical differences amng actual brains,
the team tried t decde what participants had heard using just three secnds f brain activity data frm each persn.
The team instructed the AI t match up the speech sunds frm the stry recrdings with patterns f brain activity
that the AI cmputed as crrespnding t what peple were hearing. It then made predictins abut what the persn
might have been hearing during that shrt time, given mre than 1,000 pssibilities. Using MEG, the crrect
answer was in the AI’s tp 10 guesses, the researchers fund.
“The new study is the decding f speech recgnitin, nt prductin,” King agrees. “Thugh speech

Psychlgists have defined nstalgia (怀 旧 ) as self-cnscius, scially emtinal, bittersweet but mainly
psitive. It develps ut f happy memries mixed with a lnging fr the past and the clse relatinships we had
back then. Often, nstalgia invlves five senses. Fr example, the smell f autumn leaves might spark an intense
lnging fr yur childhd hme.
Almst everyne experiences nstalgia, althugh its bject tends t vary thrughut life. One survey
cnducted by the psychlgist Krystine Irene Batch fund that yunger peple felt mre nstalgia fr pets, tys,
and hlidays than did lder peple, wh felt it mre strngly fr music. I came f age in the 1980s, and even sngs
I fund hpelessly annying back then can fill me with nstalgic emtins.
As my clleague Julie Beck has written, nstalgia was riginally viewed as an emtinal disrder when it was
第 6页/共 12页
first defined in the late 17th century. And, crucially, it ften ccurs when peple are experiencing negative mds
r having bad experiences. Lneliness can be a trigger, as researchers fund in 2008. Anther is bad weather.
Hwever, despite its assciatin with negative emtins, nstalgia des nt cause r increase unhappiness.
Rather, nstalgia is a defense respnse t unhappiness, ne that brings relief frm a negative md. Psychlgists
writing in the Jurnal f Persnality and Scial Psychlgy in 2006 fund that stirring nstalgia in experiments
strengthened peple’s scial bnds, bsted their psitive feelings abut themselves, and imprved their md.
Similar research has shwn that when peple feel nstalgia, it can fire their sense f life’s meaning, lwer an
existential (存在主义的) reactin t the idea f death, increase spirituality, and raise ptimism.
Schlars aren’t sure exactly why nstalgia wrks; sme have inferred that recalling happy memries
strengthens “valued aspects f the self” in situatins when we might therwise feel lnely r unwrthy. Either way,
its emtinal intensity allws the jy f the past t verpwer the unpleasantness f the present, a little escapism
that helps get us thrugh the bad times.
12. What d the psychlgists think f nstalgia?
A. Always painful. B. Primarily psitive.
C. Seldm intense. D. Usually uncnscius.
13. Why is the authr’s experience mentined in paragraph 2?
A. T shw the bjects f nstalgia change with age.
B. T illustrate annying music ften leads t nstalgia.
C. T highlight the yung are mre likely t be nstalgic.
D. T demnstrate nstalgia has an impact n emtins.
14. In which situatin may peple easily feel nstalgia?
A. Attending a lively class. B. Engaging in a family reunin.
C. Staying alne in an empty rm. D. Jining in a jyful birthday party.
15. What may be a benefit f nstalgia?
A. Maintaining self-respect. B. Shaping persnal insights.
C. Escaping frm daily chas. D. Enhancing ne’s self-wrth.
