“Tw rads diverged in a wd, and I—
I tk the ne less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. ”
As Rbert Frst reminded us, chices are ften difficult and will bring bth a gain and a lss. Shuld I spend
my Sunday playing glf r taking a day trip t the Nrth Frk with my wife?
If yu are a glfer as I am, yu will say “Certainly, g playing glf. ” Glf is perhaps the greatest challenge t
self-imprvement. In glf, every swing is cunted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the glfers as they lie
in bed that evening, and therefre, self-imprvement is pursued.
Nw let us return t the questin at hand. Yu will nt be surprised t hear that I did in fact g t the Nrth
Frk. But, hw has that imprved me? Can this be quantified (量化)? In glf, whse gal is t cmplete the game
with as few shts as pssible, if I average 80 and I sht a 76, I knw that fr that day at least I have imprved
upn my frmer self and thus feel satisfied.
第 2页/共 10页
Yu may argue that travel is nt abut self-imprvement at all but just abut having grand experiences. I beg
t differ. It des matter hw these things change and imprve me. Seeing the flks dancing in the streets shuld
change yu. And talking t the manager f the biscuit shp, ught t change yu. I think travel des change us, but
it’s very hard t say just hw. Hw des ne quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or hw d yu quantify the tasty
taste f the scnes (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning f Rbert Frst’s pem. T be hnest, I wuld say all
f us have a hard time analyzing ur wish t travel t faraway places. I am nt sure what the answer is t this tricky
questin. I may nt have made any hle-in-nes n the Nrth Frk but I did enjy thse scnes.
4. Why des the authr qute the pem?
A. T express the meaning f life. B. T explain the challenges the pet met.
C. T shw the impact f chices. D. T intrduce the general views t chices.
5. What des the authr think f playing glf?
A. Its result is measurable. B. It is the mst challenging sprts.

Expecting pleasure r pain befre tasting ht sauce (酱料) appears t influence hw the brain respnds t the
spicy (辣的) flavur. Brain scans f peple tasting drps f ht sauce have revealed hw psitive and negative
expectatins can influence brain activity patterns fr pleasure and pain.
Yi Lu at East China Nrmal University and her clleagues emplyed 47 vlunteers — rughly half liked
spicy fds and half didn’t — t receive drps f bth mild and strng ht sauce in their muths while lying
inside a brain imaging scanner. Cmputer cntrlled the liquids sent ut nt-s-spicy and very spicy sauce, as well
as water t clean their muths, thrugh a bunch f three really lng tubes that went right int the participants’
muths. The researchers cnducted ne rund f experiments withut setting expectatins. But in the secnd run,
they signaled t participants what intensity ht sauce they wuld get using different-clured shapes. An image f
tw red peppers, fr example, signaled the httest sauce, while ne red and ne blue pepper signaled the mildest.
第 3页/共 10页
The brain scans shwed that, fr ht haters, the negative expectatin f receiving a spicy sample enlarged
activity in brain regins that prcess pain. This prvides a “critical warning” fr hw medical patients’ negative
expectatins culd increase pain, says Luana Cllca at the University f Maryland. By cmparisn, the psitive
expectatin f receiving a spicy treat bsted a pleasure signature in the brain f ht sauce lvers, but nly fr the
mild versin. This represents “parallel subjective realities”, a thery n hw expectatins shape subjective
experiences and perceptins f reality.
“Future studies culd investigate hw strngly such brain patterns track subjective experiences f pain r
pleasure,” says Tr Wager at Dartmuth Cllege in New Hampshire. “The brader implicatins are beynd spicy
fd,” says Yi Lu. “Understanding hw psitive and negative expectatins influence understanding can infrm
appraches in medicine. ”
8. What is the research mainly abut?
A. Hw the brain reacts t fd. B. Hw expectatins affect feelings.
C. Hw spicy flavur influences the brain. D. Hw the brain activity patterns are frmed.
9. What can we learn abut the experiments in paragraph 2?
A. Participants received three tubes f spicy liquid each time.
B. The secnd run was cnducted withut setting expectatins.
C. Participants’ brain activities were mnitred during the trials.
D. Different images were used t cnfuse participants’ expectatins.
10. What can be cncluded frm the result f the experiment?
A. Ht haters raise their negative expectatins.
B. Participants’ expectatins influence their experiences.
C. Ht lvers’ expectatins have little impact n the result.
D. Patients’ increasing pain results in their negative expectatins.
11. Accrding t the text, which area will the research prbably be applied t?
A. Clinical research. B. Psychlgical test.
C. Medical insurance. D. Restaurant industry.

At a crp breeding (培育) center in Shanghai, researchers have successfully harvested rice that was grwn
frm seeds initially bred n China’s space statin, Tiangng. The rice plants have cmpleted a full grwth cycle n
Earth, maturing after mre than 100 days since planting.
第 4页/共 10页
This space-t-grund experiment began with 6 rice seeds sent int rbit in 2022 n the Wentian spacecraft.
Taiknauts nbard Tiangng bred these seeds int 59, which they returned t Earth. Researchers then selected
high-quality seeds, grwing them under cntrlled climate cnditins and prducing arund 10,000 new seeds.
Zheng Huiqing, a lead researcher at the Chinese Academy f Sciences’ Center, shared that the team’s
findings suggest space-bred seeds can reprduce effectively n Earth, suggesting ptential fr future space
agriculture. Zheng highlighted that the space-bred rice pssesses unique traits, such as a higher sugar cntent, with
sugar levels estimated t be five t six times higher than standard rice. The space-bred rice als shwed a slight
increase in prtein cntent. “That means space-bred rice tastes sweeter and has mre energy,” she added.
Space breeding, the methd used in this experiment, expses seeds t space radiatin and micrgravity,
generating gene mutatins (基因突变). These mutatins are carefully assessed upn the seeds’ return t Earth,
smetimes resulting in advantageus traits like shrter grwth times, imprved disease resistance, and higher
utput. Zha Hui, an expert in China Academy f Space Technlgy, emphasized the safety f space-bred fd,
explaining that unlike genetically mdified crps, space-bred seeds naturally mutate withut intrducing freign
genes. Hwever, the space-bred rice has fewer leaves, which cmplicates clse planting. Researchers are planning
further studies t understand these leaf traits and explre pssible genetic changes.
The Tiangng rice experiment marked a milestne fr crp science, as it was the first time that rice had
cmpleted a full life cycle — frm seed germinatin (发芽) t reprductin — in rbit.
12. What can we knw abut the space-t-grund experiment?
A. Seeds grwn in rbit prmise higher crp quality.
B. Seeds bred in space were further grwn successfully n Earth.
C. New species f seeds grwn in space have achieved great success.
D. Climate cnditins were cntrlled when seeds were sent int rbit.
13. What des the underlined wrds “traits” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Materials. B. Arrangements. C. Disadvantages. D. Characteristics.
14. What des Zha Hui stress abut the space-bred rice?
A. Its security. B. Its artificial prcess.
C. Its nutritin. D. Its majr shrtcming.
15. Which f the fllwing is the best title?
A. Organic Farming: High-quality Planting in Space
B. Space Explratin: A Jurney t the Space and Beynd

C. New Planting Apprach: Replacing the Traditinal Farming
D. Space-t-grund Cycle: Prmising Future Space Agriculture
