Decades ag, my friend Caetlin received a special assignment frm the pet Rbert L. Hass, wh was then her undergraduate literature prfessr. He instructed each student t memrize three pems frm The Nrtn Anthlgy f American Literature — nt fr any urgent exam reasn, he claimed, but instead t prepare them fr their unavidable future slitude (孤独). At sme pint, Caetlin recalls him saying, yu’re ging t be alne, and petry is ging t be all yu have.
If the task was a strange ne, it’s because the act f memrizing a pem feels curiusly ld-fashined in an era when few f us encunter petry at all. When I was in graduate schl, wrking tward a degree in English literature, I mstly limited myself t prse. It was nly in my 40s that I began t change my ways.
It happened in a flight t Seattle. Fr hurs, I read nthing else but a pem. Smetimes I spke its lines alud, my vice masked by the airplane’s thrum (嗡嗡响). Smetimes I went thrugh the whle pem at nce, and smetimes I repeated a single stanza (诗节) ver and ver, and by the time my plane landed n the West Cast, I had the whle thing, all 40 lines f it, in my head. Because the prcess is as simple as it is very bring, memrizing a great pem always begins as a crime. The bredm f repetitin reduces the great charm it has. But as yu run yur hands thrugh the bk, the lines at last cme tgether again, and the scattered text transfrms back int a treasure, ften a mre valuable ne than it was befre.
In ther wrds, petry survives cntinuusly by becming a part f thse wh read it. It can d s nly because it is s specific, s entirely different frm us, that taking it in expands ur wn sense f what we are.
Sme f the pems I’ve memrized are already fading, and that’s fine. I knw that if I spend a little time with them, they’ll sing in me again. Others keep thumping in me like a new pulse. I wn’t prmise yu that memrizing petry will make yur life better, but it will make yu mre: mre in tuch with language, with ther minds, maybe with what yu might yet becme.
56.Why did Rbert L. Hass advise students t read pems?
A.T becme literature prfessrs.B.T prepare fr the cming exams.
C.T cmpse mre riginal pems.D.T relieve their future lneliness.

A.It’s ut f date t recite pems. B.Repetitin wastes a lt f time.
C.Repetitin destrys the pem’s beauty. D.It’s a shame t read pems n plane.
59.Hw des understanding petry influence us?
A.By bradening self-understanding. B.By refreshing ur gd memries.
C.By helping us survive the hard life. D.By reminding us t frget the past.
60.What is the authr’s attitude twards memrizing petry in the last paragraph?
A.Dubtful.B.Appreciative.C.Dismissive.D.Critical.

A new finding frm Cambridge scientists has shwn that an artificial intelligent (AI) system can acquire features f the brains f humans in rder t slve tasks.
“Nt nly is the brain great at slving cmplex prblems, but it des s while using very little energy. In ur new wrk we shw that cnsidering the brains’ prblem-slving abilities alngside its gal f spending as few resurces as pssible can help us understand why brains lk like they d, ” said Jascha Achterberg, a schlar at the University f Cambridge.
In a study published in Nature Machine Intelligence, Achterberg and his clleagues created an artificial system intended t mdel a simplified versin f the brain. Instead f real neurns (神经元) in brains, the system used cmputatinal ndes(节点).
The researchers gave the system a simple task t cmplete, where it had t cmbine multiple pieces f infrmatin t decide upn the shrtest rute t get t the destinatin. One f the reasns the team chse this particular task is that t cmplete it, the system needs t maintain a number f elements-start lcatin, end lcatin and intermediate steps-and nce it has learned t d the task reliably, it is pssible t bserve, at different mments in a trial, which ndes are imprtant.
Initially, the system des nt knw hw t cmplete the task and makes mistakes. But when it is given feedback it gradually learns t get better at the task. The system then repeats the task until eventually it learns t perfrm it crrectly.
C-authr Prfessr Duncan Astle said, “This simple task frces artificial systems t prduce sme quite cmplicated characteristics. Interestingly, they are characteristics shared by bilgical systems. I think that tells us smething fundamental abut why ur brains are rganised the way they are.” The team als believes their findings are likely t be f interest t the AI cmmunity, t, where they culd allw fr the develpment f mre efficient systems.

Prgress is smething that everyne lks frward t, whether in persnal life r in sciety. It represents ur ability t change and imprve the way we live. Prgress is ften linked t better ways f ding things. Hwever, this idea f prgress hlds true nly if we embrace technlgy and cntinuusly seek mre efficient ways f ding things.
Yet, fr many peple, especially thse wh lng fr the “gd ld days”, prgress inevitably cmes with sacrifices. With the rise f new technlgy, efficiency has greatly imprved. Cmmunicatin, fr example, has becme much mre efficient. Tday, peple can cnnect with each ther instantly, n matter where they are in the wrld. With just a click f a buttn, we can talk r even see each ther withut leaving ur hmes. Persnal visits, where we spend time tgether in real life, have becme less cmmn. With mbile phnes and tablets, peple ften n lnger make the effrt t visit friends and family in persn, even thugh face-t-face interactins hld unique value in building clser relatinships.
Anther area where prgress brings bth benefits and challenges is in mass prductin. Factries tday are much mre efficient, thanks t machines and autmatin. This has allwed gds t be prduced in large quantities with greater accuracy than human hands culd ever achieve. Hwever, the dwnside is that this efficiency ften cmes at the cst f the “persnal tuch”. Many items that were nce handcrafted are nw prduced in factries. While mass prductin allws supply t meet demand quickly, it ften leads t a decrease in quality. Handcrafted items, fr example, are unique and full f character, but mass-prduced versins lack individuality and the same level f craftsmanship.
Despite these challenges, it is imprtant nt t view prgress frm a ne-sided perspective. In fact, prgress has als allwed traditin t survive. Mdern technlgy can help preserve ld prducts and techniques, ensuring that traditinal crafts are nt lst. Thrugh new technlgy, many ld prducts can be revived and brught back t their riginal state.
Ultimately, it is peple’s attitude twards prgress that determines the influence technlgy has n sciety. Technlgy itself is flexible — it can be used in varius ways depending n hw we chse t apply it. The greatest challenges f prgress cme frm thse wh are unwilling t adapt their mindset and embrace new ideas. When we use prgress in a way that fits ur needs, we can create a new future while still respecting the past.
66.Accrding t Paragraph 1, what is necessary fr prgress t ccur?
A.Rejecting new ideas.
B.Hlding n t traditinal ways.
C.Pursuing cmfrt ver innvatin.
D.Accepting technlgy and advances steadily.

A.efficiency imprvements ften cme with a price
B.technlgy presents few significant drawbacks
C.the “gd ld days” ffered greater efficiency
D.face-t-face interactins are unnecessary
68.What des the authr say abut mass prductin?
A.It has lacked great accuracy.
B.It has increased prduct csts.
C.It has reduced individuality in prducts.
D.It has entirely replaced handcrafted items.
69.What is the authr’s view n the relatinship between prgress and traditin?
A.Prgress ften destrys traditin. B.Prgress can help prtect traditin.
C.Prgress weakens traditinal values.D.Prgress and traditin cannt exist tgether.
70.What is the main idea f the last paragraph?
A.Technlgy must be applied in a fixed manner.
B.Prgress shuld be adapted t meet scietal needs.
C.Peple tend t lk back n the past with deep regret.
D.The impact f technlgy depends n peple’s attitude.
