My parents bught a huse in Verna, New Jersey, in 1946 when I was 5. My sister, Merry, was brn tw years later. Our huse was set far back frm the rad. It felt safe and adventurus with a big back yard and suburban wildlife. The main attractin fr me, by far, was the massive tree in the frnt yard, which rse higher than I culd see. We called it Old Oak. An arbrist (树艺师) wh checked Old Oak fr my parents after the snwstrm f 1947 had prnunced it 300 years ld.
Playing beneath Old Oak, my best friend, Justine, and I made ty hrses. Frm Old Oak’s lwest branch, my dad hung a wden bard n a chain fr a swing. The back-and-frth mtin f the swing and rhythmic clicking f the chain cmfrted me. I’d lie under the green umbrella, admiring Old Oak’s height — my prtectr. Time passed. I was swinging less under the tree and mre n the dance flr. Lng after my father sld the huse, Merry and I visited Old Oak when attending Verna High reunins.
Justine called last Octber. A new wner had bught the prperty and taken dwn the tree. I fund the real estate (房产) pht. In frnt f the huse lay tw huge lengths f trunk. I’d have t act fast t get a piece fr Merry and me. The agent invlved in the sale said that he wuld try t talk with the new wner. Hwever, that attempt failed. Then I turned t Jhn Zelenka, an artful arbrist, fr help. Frtunately, he sent phts f the remaining trunk pieces, cntacted the wner, and suggested slices fr my wdwrking hbbyist sn in New Hampshire.
On a cld April mrning, my husband and I met Zelenka t examine the pieces he’d cut after transprting the trunk. I culdn’t call Merry fast enugh. She was excited. Trees give us such gifts frm flwers t shade. My relatinship with Old Oak has taken n a new frm.

A trustwrthy press helps infrm peple and mnitr all levels f gvernment. That is essential t a natin. Yet this useful establishment is grwing increasingly unppular. Accrding t the University f Nrth Carlina (UNC), newsrm jbs acrss the cuntry are fewer than half what they were 10 years ag. And n many cllege campuses, the news abut the news is bleak t.
Take the Syracuse, New Yrk, student-run newspaper The Daily Orange: It isn’t daily anymre. The paper prints just three times each week. Next year, The Diamndback f the University f Maryland will be nline nly. Half the newspapers that still exist n paper say they dn’t print as many cpies. And UNC’s The Daily Tar Heel has cut staff pay and rented cheaper ffices t make its budget.
Cnsidering the prblems in jurnalism, it’s surprising that the enrllment (注册人数) in cllege jurnalism prgrams is up. The Daily Orange managing editr Catherine Leffert calls the layffs and cutbacks disheartening. “But what keeps me wanting t be a jurnalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” she says.
But jurnalism educatrs wnder, “Are we preparing yung peple fr a dying industry?” Years ag, jurnalism graduates tk lw-level reprter jbs at newspapers r televisin statins. That still happens. But tday’s jbs mre ften invlve digital editing, scial media prductin, and vide streaming. Sme universities are taking actin. The University f Flrida ffers a sprts media prgram. Several schls highlight statistics-driven data jurnalism.
The news isn’t all bad. Jurnalism prfessr Kathleen Culver says, “When I lk at 18–and 20-year-lds in jurnalism and see what they want t d, I’m ptimistic.” Maddy Arrwd is the student editr f The Daily Tar Heel. She says her experience makes her mre interested in a jurnalism career, nt less. Her ptimism “cmes frm knwing that peple still need news. They still need infrmatin.”

Researchers fund that they culd accurately predict hw clse tw peple were based nly n their brain activity in respnse t a series f unfamiliar vide clips. Simply put: Yu and yur best friends really d think alike. Accrding t a Dartmuth study finding, friends have similar neural (神经的) respnses t real-wrld stimuli (刺激) and these similarities can be used t predict wh yur friends are. The study reveals that friends have the mst similar neural activity patterns, fllwed by friends-f-friends wh, in turn, have mre similar neural activity than peple three degrees remved (friends-f-friends-f-friends).
Published in Nature Cmmunicatins the study is the first f its kind t examine the cnnectins between the neural reactin f peple within a real-wrld scial netwrk. “Neural respnses t dynamic, naturalistic stimuli, like vides, can give us a windw int peple’s unlimited, unplanned thught prcesses as they unfld. Our results suggest that friends prcess the wrld arund them in exceptinally similar ways,” says lead authr Carlyn Parkinsn.
The study analyzed the friendships r scial ties within a grup f 280 graduate students. The researchers estimated the scial distance between pairs f individuals based n mutually (相互地)
reprted scial ties. Frty-tw f the students were asked t watch a range f vides while their neural activity was recrded in a functinal magnetic resnance imaging (fMRI) scanner. The vides cvered a range f tpics and genres, including plitics, science, cmedy and music vides, fr which a range f respnses was expected. Each participant watched the same vides in the same rder, with the same instructins. The researchers then cmpared the neural respnses pairwise acrss the set f students t determine if pairs f students wh were friends had mre similar brain activity than pairs further remved frm each ther in their scial netwrk.
The findings revealed that neural respnse similarity was strngest amng friends, and this pattern appeared acrss brain regins invlved in emtinal respnding and high-level reasning. Even when the researchers cntrlled variables, including left-handedness r right-handedness, age, gender, race, and natinality, the analgy in neural activity amng friends was still evident. The team als fund that fMRI respnse similarities culd be used t predict nt nly if a pair were friends but als the scial distance between the tw.
12. What can we learn abut the study mentined in the text?
A. It is riginal and checks peple’s neural respnses.
B. It has yet t win recgnitin frm the academic wrld.
C. It invlved mre than 200 students watching varius vides.
D. It required a prfessinal device t analyze participants’ cnversatin.
13. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
A. The design f the study.B. The prcess f the study.
C. The findings f the study.D. The innvatin f the study.
14. What is the authr’s attitude twards the findings f the study?
A. Skeptical.B. Supprtive.C. Indifferent.D. Neutral.
15. What might be the best title fr the passage?
A. Neural Respnses Shape Scial Bnds
B. Hw Vides Cnnect Peple’s Minds
C. The Science Behind Scial Netwrks.
D. Friendship Seen Thrugh Neural Patterns.
