Despite the hpes f bth astrnmers and science fictin fans alike, Venus may never have been habitable t life. This is the cnclusin f a new study ut f the University f Cambridge, which has been published in the jurnal Nature Astrnmy.
Tday, Venus is an extremely ht planet, with surface temperatures arund 867 °F, a thick atmsphere made mstly f carbn dixide (CO2), and a surface pressure 92 times that f Earth. Yet the planet has been lng therized t have been habitable many millins f years ag, with ceans f liquid water.
The researchers, hwever, fund that Venus’s atmsphere is t dry t have supprted ceans. The planet’s atmsphere lacks enugh water, which wuld have evaprated (蒸发) as the planet warmed ver time.
There are tw main theries abut Venus’s histry: Either the planet has always been as ht as it is tday, s water never existed in liquid frm, r Venus gradually became htter due t the greenhuse effect, causing any water t evaprate. The Cambridge team tk a different apprach by studying Venus’s current atmspheric chemistry. They calculated (计算) the rates at which water and ther gases are destryed in Venus’s atmsphere. Unlike Earth’s vlcanes, which release mstly water vapr, Venus’s vlcanes release nly abut 6% water. This suggests that Venus’s vlcanic magma cntains very little water.
The study als highlighted that, unlike Earth and Mars, Venus shws n signs f ersin (侵蚀) caused by liquid water. Since liquid water is necessary fr life as we knw it, the lack f such evidence makes it unlikely that Venus ever supprted Earth-like life.
While we may nt knw fr certain if Venus ever supprted life, the study suggests that it likely never had ceans. This discvery affects the search fr life n ther planets, especially thse similar t Venus.
NASA’s DAVINCI missin, expected t reach Venus later this decade, may prvide further answers. Understanding Venus’s histry can help guide the search fr life beynd Earth.
8.What is a misunderstanding abut Venus frm paragraph 2?
A.It is packed with a wide range f wildlife.
B.It is habitable with ceans f liquid water.
C.It becmes htter due t the greenhuse effect.
D.It has a thinner atmsphere than that f Earth.
9.Hw did the Cambridge team cnduct the study?
A.By referring t previusly published articles.
B.By analyzing Venus’s atmspheric chemistry.
C.By creating an envirnment similar t Venus’s.
D.By cperating with the scientists frm NASA.
10.What is the authr’s attitude t NASA’s DAVINCI missin?

This is nt the first time that animals r peple have becme ill after cnsuming kd millet. In human infectin cases, treatment with stmach washing helped peple recver, but animals like dgs and elephants did nt survive after eating the millet. In 1985, a case f kd millet pisning in humans led researchers t investigate. They fund that the millet was infected by tw types f fungi which prduce a txin (毒素) called cyclpiaznic acid (CPA). Later studies shwed that ther types f fungi can als prduce this txin.
Back in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, researchers believe that these fungi caused the recent deaths f the elephants. Tests n the elephants’ bdies fund high levels f CPA in their stmachs.
Myclgist Kaustuv Sanyal explained that fungi release spres (孢子) that spread thrugh the air. These spres favur wet cnditins, which is why fungal grwth increases after rain. The regin arund the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve has heavy rains and a lng rainy seasn, creating a cnducive envirnment fr the fungus t grw n the millet.
Despite the serius effects f the txin n animals and humans, the fungi d nt harm the plants. Researchers are still studying hw the fungi affect plants. Althugh there are the high levels f CPA in the elephants’ bdies, the exact cause has nt been cnfirmed. Frest fficials plan t send millet samples (样品) frm the area t experts fr further testing. This culd help determine if the fungi were respnsible fr the deaths f the elephants.
