Largely cut ff frm e-mail, Twitter and my favrite newspaper websites, I had few ways t cnnect t the wrld except fr radi and hw much radi can ne listen t, really? I had t d what I had planned t all alng: read bks.
This experience has had a happy ending. With determinatin and the strng supprt f my wife, I wn in my vacatin struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, nt the iPad, that was the prblem. I knew I had wn when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted t stp t use the Wi-Fi. “ I dn’t need it,” I said.
Hwever, as we return t pst -vacatin life, a harder test begins: Can I cntinue when I’m back at wrk? There are times when the need t knw what’s being said right nw is great. And I have n intentin f giving up my cnvenience cmpletely. But I hpe t resist the temptatin (诱惑) t check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads t checking my Twitter feed and a website r tw.
I think a vacatin is suppsed t help yu reset yur brain t becme mre prductive. Here I hpe this ne wrked.

T develp ne’s taste in English, the mst effective way is t read English bks extensively. Hwever, ne may be at a lss t chse the apprpriate bks, especially as a beginner.I wuld like t share sme f my experience.
My first English nvel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recmmended by many English teachers and prfessrs as an ideal bk fr English learners. But I had great difficulty in understanding the nvel, let alne enjying it. It’s nt the vcabulary that trubled me,but rather the way Austen cnstructs sentences, and her way f thinking, which seemed t remte t me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recvered after reading Hemingway’s nvel Farewell t Arms. I particularly liked his brief and lively style. S my first suggestin is,as a beginner, yu’d better chse cntemprary nvels instead f classical nes.
Hwever, reading nvels is nt the nly way t imprve yur English. English essays can at nce infrm yu,entertain yu, and imprve yur taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s wrk. Its language is plain, yet yu cannt help feeling the elegance and the unique sense f humr. His simple language enables his philsphy(哲理) within the reach f rdinary peple. Here cmes my secnd suggestin—essays are indispensable.
Never fllw ther’s pinins blindly, hwever famus r influential the persn might be. As a saying ges,ne man’s meat is anther man’s pisn. With that in mind,we are sure t find ut ur favrite writers thrugh reading and develp ur fine taste in English.
      32. What made the authr’s first English nvel hard t understand?
      A. Cmplex cnversatins.B. Nt knwing the scial backgrund.
      C. The ld-fashined vcabulary.D. Sentences and Austen’s thinking pattern.
      33. Which can best replace the underlined wrd“ indispensable”?
      A. necessary B. challenging C. relatedD. bring
      34. What advice des the authr give in the last paragraph?
      A. Chse interesting bks.
      B. Read bks f gd quality.
      C. Dn’t be easily affected by ther’s chices.
      D. Cmpare the prices f bks befre buying.
      35. What is the authr’s purpse f writing the passage?
      A. Give cmments n literature wrks.
      B. Tell beginners hw t chse English bks.
      C. Encurage peple t read mre English bks.
      D. Recmmend first-class bks t English learners.
