2 Brn int a pr family in the early Tang Dynasty, the yung Han Gan had t help supprt his family by wrking in a lcal wine shp. His artistic talent was discvered by accident when he was sent t the pet Wang Wei's huse t cllect payment fr sme wine. While waiting at the gate, Han Gan used a stick t draw pictures in the dirt and was seen by the pet himself.

3 The Tang emperrs were very fnd f hrses. This meant that the animal was a frequent subject fr artists. At that time, the mst cmmn way t study hrse painting was by cpying the wrks f previus painters. Han Gan's methd, hwever, was different——he bserved the animal itself. He was a frequent visitr t the ryal stables and even mved in t live with the stable wrkers fr quite sme time.
The hrses, whether resting r n the mve, ffered him plenty f inspiratin. The mre time he spent bserving these animals, the mre his understanding f them grew. Day after day, Han Gan painted the hrses, his brush presenting every detail that he saw with his wn eyes.
