Dan Sudran has taken it upn himself t help clse the gap. Grwing up a gd, studius kid in Kansas, he fllwed the rules and went t cllege, then law schl. But he was cnfused. "I culdn’t really figure ut what I was r what I was suppsed t be," Sudran says. Sudran finally had his answer in his late 30s. He started taking apart electrnics and cllecting materials frm the beach. In schl, science had held n interest fr him at all. But ut in the real wrld, it turned ut t be the thing he’d been missing all alng. "My life becmes better since I gt int science," Sudran says.
And that inspired him. What if he culd give children the same experience he’d waited 30 years t discver? S Sudran gt a cllege t dnate sme space and equipment. Pretty sn, a small nnprfit prject called the Cmmunity Science Wrkshp Netwrk was brn.
Tday there are six wrkshps, almst all in lw-incme neighbrhds arund Califrnia. One f the wrkshps is filled with stuff: micrscpes, pwer tls, even a turtle and a snake. There’s n curriculum, nthing t memrize but tls t play and experiment with. Eighth-grader Jse Vega is wrking hard at building a rbt while Esteban Espinza, 6, is getting tadples (蝌蚪) ut f a tank t examine them under a micrscpe. One grup f kids are spreading ut n the flr, trying t figure ut hw t build a ht air balln.

During the starvatin event in 2022, nearly 800 brwn pelicans were admitted t wildlife nursing centers and received cnsiderate care, with nly 394 eventually returned t the wild, accrding t the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The cause f the current crisis remains largely unknwn, but sme interesting guesses are flying abut. At ne pint, the birds were checked fr the flu that has newly infected s many animals this year. Luckily, nne f the sick pelicans tested psitive fr it. "We dn’t have any indicatin that it’s directly human-caused, either," says Henkel, a senir envirnmental scientist. "It’s nt a human actin f any kind that we’re aware f."
One thery is that pwerful winds may be t blame, as lw visibility culd be preventing the pelicans frm diving well enugh t catch their meals, and hungry birds ften get trapped in fishing lines. The evidence pinting t starvatin as the cause may als better explain why the pelicans cme in with injuries.
Thse invlved in brwn pelican recvery effrts nte that while yu shuld keep yur distance frm them, humans can be f assistance by immediately reprting an animal sighting t a lcal rescue center and keeping an eye n it until help arrives. Such an urgent respnse can ften mean the difference between life and death fr a pelican that needs life-saving care. Yu are mre likely t think f the infrmatin that is repeated t be true than the infrmatin yu hear nly nce. Yu assume that if peple are ging t put in effrt t repeat a statement, this reflects the truth f the statement.
Simply repeating sme pieces f infrmatin des nt actually make it true, but this tendency — als called the illusry (错觉的) truth effect — is a prejudice that can lead yu t draw the wrng cnclusins. An imprtant step in decreasing the negative influence f prejudices in thinking is t be aware f them. T what degree are peple aware f the illusry truth effect? This questin was addressed in the jurnal Cgnitin by Simne Mattavelli.
In the critical study, participants did tw sessins. In ne sessin, they read abut a study in which peple were expsed t trivia (琐事) statements and then were asked whether bth statements they had heard befre as well as new statements were true. They were asked t predict the percentage f each statement that wuld be judged as true. At anther sessin a few days later, participants actually perfrmed this study, reading a set f 20 trivia statements and then judging the truth f 40 statements, half f which were the nes they saw earlier and the ther half f which were new.
This study replicated the illusry truth effect. Peple were mre likely t judge statements they had seen befre as true than statements that were new. Tw interesting findings emerged frm the predictins. First, participants tended t underestimate the size f the illusry truth effect fr everyne. Secnd, participants were mre wrng when predicting their wn perfrmance cmpared t predicting the perfrmance f anther persn.
This wrk is particularly imprtant in light f the amunt f misinfrmatin presented in scial media. Many peple are influencing public pinins abut plitical and ecnmic matters. Scial media websites with misinfrmatin will lead peple t believe this infrmatin is true just because it is stated.
32. What is Simne’s study mainly abut cncerning the illusry truth effect?
A.Peple’s awareness f it.
B.Peple’s reactin t it.
C.Its causes.
D.Its prcess.
33. Hw did the participants engage in the first sessin f the study?
A.Reading, repeating and judging.
B.Reading, assessing and frecasting.
C.Recrding, judging and predicting.
D.Predicting, bserving and reflecting.
34. What des the underlined wrd "replicate" in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Crrespnd with.
B.Be cntrary t.
C.Put frward.
D.Accunt fr.
35. What is the authr’s attitude tward Simne’s study?
