400 millin tns f plastic are generated annually, mst f which cmes frm single-use plastic While cuntries are making prgress in reducing this waste thrugh paper bags and straws, there are still applicatins where the prperties f plastic are necessary.
Transparent (透明的) wd is an alternative fr such applicatins and is highly preferred since it prevents the harm f petrleum-derived (石油衍生的) plastic prducts. German scientist Siegfried Fink first created transparent wd in the year 1992, and ver the past three decades it has been significantly imprved by ther researchers as well.
In its natural frm, wd is nt transparent. Hwever, researchers have fund that remving lignin, a naturally ccurring biplymer that prvides structural supprt fr the plant tissue, can make it transparent. T d s, the wd is saked in a warm slutin cnsisting f multiple chemicals, fllwed by biling it in anther slutin. This remves the lignin cmpletely and turns the wd white. Hwever, the space that was ccupied by lignin needs t be filled up t maintain structural integrity. This prcess is dne by using a resin (树脂) at a temperature f 185 Fahrenheit (85℃).
The final prduct can have as much as 90 transparency, and it desn’t break easily. Mre imprtantly, it is mre bidegradable than glass r plastic.
While transparent wd isn’t cmmercial yet, it has been emplyed in a wide variety f applicatins ranging frm cnstructin t energy strage, making flexible electrnics and packaging.
The researchers at the Indian Institute f Technlgy ( IIT) cnducted a life-cycle analysis (LCA) f transparent wd t determine the envirnmental impact f its prductin and end-f-life (EOL) cycle. The study fund that using hydrgen perxide fr delignificatin, fllwed by using epxy fr infiltratin, was the mst ec-friendly. When scaled up fr industrial prductin, the frmer methd wuld lwer electricity cnsumptin by as much as 98. 8 percent.
EOL analysis shwed that transparent wd had a reduced eclgical impact cmpared t plyethylene (聚乙烯), paving the way fr it t be cmmercially adapted t replace the petrleum-based material.
8. Why is transparent wd preferred cmpared t plastic?
A. It is easier t make.B. It is envirnmentally friendly.
C. It can be used lnger.D. It can be used repeatedly.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?

The fruit-tree pinhle brer (针孔蛀虫), as its name implies, makes hles in fruit trees. It lays its eggs and raises its yung in the galleries thus created . Yet the beetles (甲虫) d nt feed directly n the wd they bre int. Instead, they devur fungi (真菌) that grw n the wd thus expsed.
Researchers have lng suspected that this is a frm f farming, because they have evidence that the beetles carry spres (孢子) f their preferred crp, R. sulphurea, int their smallhldings — in effect, swing it there.
Observatins f natural fruit-tree pinhle-bre r dwellings suggest that R. sulphurea grws in them mre abundantly (大量地) than might be expected, given all the fungal cmpetitin arund — but nt why. T check whether the beetles are, indeed, weeding their crp, Janina Diehl and Peter Biedermann f the University f Freiburg did an experiment.
In the labratry, they had mther beetles f the little wd bre restablish nests, in which the typical fungal gardens frmed. But befre the beetles had started laying their eggs, they cllected all f the beetles and then returned half t their dwellings while leaving the ther nests empty. Genetic analysis f the fungal gardens after 40 days shwed that the presence f the beetles had greatly changed the fungal cmmunity. Twenty days after that, they sampled the gallery walls fr fungi.
As they had hped and expected, R. sulphurea was much mre abundant in beetle-tended galleries than in thse withut residents. In the frmer, it made up half f the fungal mass extracted. In the latter, less than a third. These beetles are indeed weeding their crp.
“Further research int hw exactly the beetles suppress the grwth f weed fungi culd alsprvide wrthwhile insights fr human agriculture, which is struggling with weed resistance, fr example,” says Biedermann. “It’s highly exciting fr us t see hw nature has been ding this fr 60 millin years. We humans can still learn smething frm these mechanisms.”
12. What des the underlined wrd “devur” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Sw.B. Tend.C. Eat.D. Mve.
13. In which aspect were the tw grups f nests different?
A. The number f the mther beetles.B. The presence f the beetles.
C. The quality f fd fungi.D. The types f weed fungi.
14. What did Diehl find abut the fruit-tree pinhle brer?
A. They weed crps.B. They feed n fruit.
C. They live in grups.D. They lay eggs in trees.
15. What can be learned frm Biedermann’s wrds?
A. The research findings are f little value.
B. Measures shuld be taken t prtect the beetles.
C. Fungi cause much damage t human agriculture.
D. Further research t the beetles might benefit farmers.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D
