It was the summer f 1979, Laurie, my wife, and I were excited t spend tw weeks explring Africa. Our adventures led us t a city called Tétuan in Mrcc. We were walking in the marketplace when I saw her.
She was abut 20 feet frm us, lying flat n her stmach, pulling herself acrss the streets. Her hands were dirty and bldied, cvered with cuts. Peple were rushing past her. She was almst invisible t everyne arund her. The crwd was sweeping us dwn the street, little fazed by the wman’s situatin.

Many years later, as I walked thrugh ur living rm past an ld wheelchair, I suddenly stpped dead in my tracks. My thughts flew back t that wman in the marketplace. I wndered if there was a way t make a wheelchair that wuld be durable (耐用的) yet lightweight, easy t prduce, and affrdable t transprt. I began t draw designs fr a prttype (样品) . Several materials crssed my mind: steel, irn, and plastic. But fr the lngest time, I was stuck. We were appraching the end f lawn (草坪) furniture seasn in Califrnia when the answer suddenly came ut f the blue. The white resin (树脂) lawn chair.
In 2001, ur humanitarian nnprfit, Free Wheelchair Missin, was brn. Over the past tw decades, we have given away wheelchairs t ver 1.3 millin peple acrss five cntinents. Smetimes it seems anti-pllutin and recycling effrts are a lng rad t nwhere. That’s hw engineer Tby McCartney felt, until visiting India in 2016. While n the trip he wrked with a grup filling hles n rads using a makeshift (权宜的) methd cmbining waste plastics, diesel fuel (柴油), and fire. Plastic has been used t cnstruct rads in India since the turn f the century — and McCartney realized the idea culd be applied t rad cnstructin in ther cuntries, “t slve tw wrld prblems : plastic waste, and n the ther side the pr quality f rads we have t drive n tday.”
Upn returning hme t Sctland, he and tw friends started experimenting, melting dwn varius cmbinatins f cnsumer plastics n his kitchen stve (炉子). After ging thrugh ver 500 different cmbinatins f waste plastics, they fund materials that wrked and funded a cmpany, named MacRebur, t start building their plastic-enhanced rads.
In MacRebur, waste plastics are brken dwn int small pieces and replace 20% f the sticky il-based bitumen (沥青) that is used n traditinal rads. The mixed material is up t 60% strnger, up t three times lnger-lasting, and has huge envirnmental benefits. Accrding t McCartney, each mile f rad laid with his cmpany’s prduct uses almst 1.2 millin single-use plastic bags r 80,000 plastic bttles. Fr every ne-mile rad, there’s a carbn reductin f abut 33 tns.
McCartney is sure that plastics in rads will nt wash back int ur rivers and ceans when it rains. Since the plastic is safely sandwiched between stne and bitumen, it can’t easily reenter the envirnment. “All ur plastics are heated t arund180 degrees,” says McCartney. “They then fully mix with the remaining bitumen in the rad, s there is n micr-plastic present in any f ur rads.”
“At the end f the day plastic is a great prduct,” McCartney says. “It lasts lng, which is a prblem if it’s a waste prduct, but nt a prblem if we want it t last.”

Standing utside my hspital the ther day, I was struck by a sight. In fact, it’s a sight we’ve all seen cuntless times: bese (肥胖的) nurses standing arund utside a hspital. It is estimated that ne in fur nurses is bese, with nearly tw-thirds being verweight.

It’s a serius prfessinal failing, because it sends the disastrus message f “d as I say nt as I d”, which is never ging t result in smene changing their ways. Yu wuldn’t take advice abut reducing yur drinking frm an alchlic, wuld yu? S why shuld yu be expected t listen t an verweight healthcare prfessinal wh is telling yu t lse a few punds?
Of curse, there are lts f instances when a dctr r nurse’s persnal struggles can really help. Fr example, I used t smke and I find this actually helps me because I can relate t patients—I knw their struggles, I knw their cncerns and I knw the things they say t themselves t avid quitting. Knwing that I used t smke helps me cme acrss as mre human t my patients—I’ve dne silly things but I’ve changed and s can they.
Similarly, a nurse wh was previusly bese but has nw lst weight culd be a real mtivatin fr patients. But until they have lst weight and can demnstrate that they practise what they prmte, they risk alienating (使疏远) the very patients they are charged with helping.
