My passin fr the field f dietetics (营养学) started at a very yung age. Ever since I can remember, I have been dreaming f becming a pastry chef.
I grew up being part f varius sprts teams. As I grew lder, I nticed hw fd influenced my perfrmance as an athlete. I started reading mre abut nutritin and signed up fr an intrductry nutritin curse during my first year f cllege.
Hwever, I nticed when I entered my dietetics classes, that I lked quite different frm mst students. I was the nly ethnically diverse student in my classes.
My mm was brn in Austria and my father in Iran. They met in Austria and mved t the U. S. befre my brther and I were brn. They expsed us t their wn traditinal cultural fds, and I grew up eating a cmbinatin f Iranian and Austrian dishes.
I remember never having a taste fr schl cafeteria fd, s I always requested my mm pack me lunch. She wuld pack me leftvers frm dinner, such as a kuku sabzi, a Persian egg and herb frittata, r schnitzel with dartffelsalat, a typical Austrian dish f fried breaded chicken. At times, I felt embarrassed abut my meals, and wuld hide these frm my peers t avid the hrrible questin f, “Ew, what is that?” Hwever, ver time, and nce I became a qualified RD (注册营养师), I realized my unique backgrund allwed me t cnnect mre deeply with thers frm different cultures.
I encuraged my clients t share what they grew up eating and what fds were custmary t their unique upbringing. I develped nutritin recmmendatins fr my clients that included traditinal fd frm their heritage culture. These experiences and my dual heritage backgrund empwered me t encurage my clients and ther RDs t prudly share their unique cultural fds, t stp feeling embarrassed, but instead embrace ur differences and increase cultural awareness in the field f dietetics.

As cities balln with grwth, access t nature fr peple living in urban areas is becming harder t find. If yu’re lucky, there might be a pcket park near where yu live, but it’s unusual t find places in a city that are relatively wild.
Past research has fund health and wellness benefits f nature fr humans, but a new study shws that wildness in urban areas is extremely imprtant fr human well-being.
The research team fcused n a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-gers, asking them t submit a written summary nline f a meaningful interactin they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissins, cding (编码) experiences int different categries. Fr example, ne participant’s experience f “We sat and listened t the waves at the beach fr a while” was assigned the categries “sitting at beach” and “listening t waves.”
Acrss the 320 submissins, a pattern f categries the researchers call a “nature language” began t emerge. After the cding f all submissins, half a dzen categries were nted mst ften as imprtant t visitrs. These include encuntering wildlife, walking alng the edge f water, and fllwing an established trail.
Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps peple recgnize and take part in the activities that are mst satisfying and meaningful t them. Fr example, the experience f walking alng the edge f water might be satisfying fr a yung prfessinal n a weekend hike in the park. Back dwntwn during a wrkday, they can enjy a mre dmestic frm f this interactin by walking alng a funtain n their lunch break.
“We’re trying t generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactins back int ur daily lives. And fr that t happen, we als need t prtect nature s that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senir authr f the study.

Rughly 42% f Americans are nearsighted tday, cmpared t 25% in 1971. The WHO predicts that abut half f the wrld’s ppulatin will have mypia, r nearsightedness, by 2050. It’s clear that ur visin is becming increasingly blurry.
On seeing this, while ur first reactin is t blame the increased use f screens, experts believe the real reasn is nt that, exactly, but it’s related: namely less time spent utdrs. Ideally, kids shuld get at least tw hurs f natural light a day.
Still, ur increased use f screens is a prblem. Mst screens are high cntrast — like black text n a white page, r light text n a dark backgrund. It’s still a thery, but sme scientists think that the cntrast f reading a bk r lking at a bright screen in a dark rm might be verstimulating ur retinas (视网膜), causing mre eye grwth prblems in children. A 2018 study in Scientific Recrds analyzed the retinal pathways when lking at black text n white backgrunds cmpared t natural envirnments, and cncluded the cntrast culd stimulate mypia. Clse wrk, like reading and lking clsely at screens, has als been shwn t cause mypia.
Researchers are wrking n ways t slw dwn rising mypia rates. A recent clinical trial fund eye-drps with a lw dse f atrpine can slw mypia in kids. There’s als sme early evidence that peripheral defcus lenses (周边离焦透镜) might help stp nearsightedness frm wrsening.
It’s strngly recmmended that regular eye examinatins shuld be a must, fr peple with mypia are at a higher risk f develping eye issues as they age, such as glaucma, early cataracts and macular degeneratin. Yu can als reduce eye pressure by making a few simple lifestyle changes, such as ensuring that yu are reading r wrking in gd light, and taking frequent breaks, etc.
    12. What des the underlined wrd “blurry” in paragraph1 mean?
    A. UnclearB. NrmalC. BrightD. Imprtant
    13. What’s the real reasn why s many peple are nearsighted?
    A. Dramatically increased use f screens.B. Lking at screens at a shrt distance.
    C. Nt enugh expsure t natural light.D. Nt having enugh breaks when wrking.
    14. Why des the authr mentin the 2018 study in Scientific Recrds?
    A. T call n readers t remve their incrrect eye habits.
    B. T prve t readers the seriusness f nearsightedness.
    C. T supprt the link between high cntrast and mypia.
    D. T shw he is well-infrmed f the advances in this field.
    15. What’s the main structure f this passage?
    A. Questins— answers.B. Prblem— reasns— slutins.
    C. Prblem— changes— effects.D. Viewpint— arguments— cnclusin.
