Wrking frm a black-and-white pht, Petersn chses clrs inspired by life stry, creating a prtrait. He shwed ne man winning his battle with alchlism, fr example, by changing the clrs frm a sad blue t a brilliant red. Petersn sells the picture — signed by bth subject and artist — fr a few thusand dllars, putting half fr his mdel. He then helps peple use the mney t get back n their feet.
“I’ve made s many mistakes thinking. I knew what peple wanted,” Petersn says, “Then I realized: Why dn’t we just ask them?” Anther subject, Kimberly Sndval, had never been able t financially supprt her daughter. She asked, “Can I use the mney t pay my daughter’s rent?” When the check was delivered, “they bth wept in my arms,” Petersn recalls.
In the eight years since Faces f Santa Ana was established, Petersn has painted 41 f these prtraits himself. Many factrs can influence whether a patient lives r dies. Hwever, in data frm different cuntries, patients seen by female dctrs seem t d better than thse seen by male nes.
In 2017, Yusuke Tsugawa f Harvard Medical Schl, and his clleagues in Bstn analyzed the medical recrds f arund 1.5 millin lder adults wh had been in hspital in America between 2011 and 2014. They fund that patients whse treatment had been perfrmed by a female dctr were abut 4% less likely t die than thse whse treatment dctr was a man.
One disadvantage with the study is that it is retrspective, lking back at naturally ccurring data rather than randm experiments. This culd cver any factrs which might be really driving the effect, says Gavin Stewart, an expert at Newcastle University. It culd be that female dctrs tend t be respnsible fr healthier patients than their male clleagues. In an experiment where patients were randmly distributed amng dctrs, female dctrs seem t d better.
Researchers say the next step is t wrk ut why. “I dn’ t think it’s the presence r absence f a Y chrmsme (染色体),” says Dr Christpher Wallis, “I think it’s a series f behaviurs that are linked with gender.” Past research has fund that female dctrs tend t spend mre time with patients, are mre likely t prvide preventive care and tend t stick mre clsely t guidelines than their male clleagues d. This culd reduce the risk f deaths.
Understanding why such difference in care will help all dctrs imprve their practice. Fr all things that advanced medical equipment and new drugs can d, a physician’s judgement seems t be as imprtant.
    8. In which way was the study in 2017 cnducted?
    A. Theretical mdels.B. Statistical methds.
    C. Practical examples.D. Histrical analyses.
    9. What des the underlined wrd “retrspective” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Critical.B. Backtracked.C. Dated.D. Accurate.
    10. Which statement wuld Wallis prbably agree with?
    A. Y chrmsme determines gender differences.
    B. Gender difference in care has different effects.
    C. Female dctrs are always assigned with healthier patients.
    D. Male dctrs culd reduce the ptential risk f deaths.
    11. What can we knw frm the last paragraph?
    A. A dctr’s judgement is as imprtant as ther factrs.
    B. Gender difference can’t help imprve dctrs’ treatment.
    C. We shuld ntice gender difference in dctrs’ treatment.
    D. We culd use dctrs’ judgement t imprve his treatment.
    D
Breakdancing (it was cined by jurnalists) has brken int the Olympics; it is the nly new event at this year’s games. Yet despite its stress n dance “battles”, breaking has tended t take the sign f “sprt” uneasily.
Indeed breakers never sught a place at the games. They will cmpete thanks t the Wrld DanceSprt Federatin (WDSF). In the past the WDSF fcused its effrts n getting ballrm dancing int the Olympics and hired Jean-Laurent Burquin. Mr Burquin said he suggested the WDSF deliver what the Olympics were seeking: an event that wuld attract yung viewers.
Televisin viewership (收视率) f the games has decreased fr years. S the Internatinal Olympic Cmmittee (IOC) has tried t attract new audiences with extreme sprts such as climbing and skatebarding. Breaking ffers the benefits f being bth impressive and easy t fllw. It was included in the Yuth Olympic Games in Buens Aires in 2018, where it was a success.
Many breakers have been unenthusiastic abut the Olympics. They have wrried that breaking culture will be misunderstanding in the turnament. Others have criticized that a ballrm-dance rganizatin pushes int breaking. In 2017 breakers criticized the WDSF fr trying t “explit breaking as a Trjan hrse t get its ft in the dr f the Olympics”.
But many breakers have recgnized the bright side f the Olympics. Nw firms including Nike and Ralph Lauren are spnsring dancers. The games will attract many yung peple t dance. Hwever, breaking will nt return in Ls Angeles in 2028, as the IOC limits the number f athletes at 10500. But what matters t breakers is using the publicity frm Paris t bring mre mney int the sprts. “It’s just ging t be less struggling fr everybdy,” says Lgan Edra, “Medal r nt, that is a prize wrth cmpeting fr.”
    12. What can we learn frm paragraph 2 and paragraph 3?
    A. Why breakers never welcme the Olympics.
    B. Why WDSF puts breaking int the Olympics.
    C. Why TV viewership f the Olympics is in decline.
    D. Why IOC is willing t receive breaking as an event.
    13. What was WDSF blamed fr?
    A. Pushing breaking int the Olympics.B. Never cnsidering the feeling f breakers.
    C. Making breaking culture misunderstanding.D. Using breaking as a passprt t the Olympics.
    14. What is the Lgan Edra’s attitude twards breakdancing int the Olympics?
    A. Optimistic.B. Negative.C. Neutral.D. Indifferent.
    15. Why has breaking tended t be a “sprt” uneasily?
    A. Because the IOC limits the number f athletes.
    B. Because it was a hit in the Yuth Olympic Games.
    C. Because many breakers hpe t preserve its culture.
    D. Because yung peple are attracted t dance in the games.
