Such a rapid reactin by plants t sund had never previusly been reprted. Just t cmpare, the researchers als tried a higher frequency nise-like that made by a msquit r a bat- and the flwers did nt respnd.
This is nt the first time that they’ve reacted t what they’re hearing arund them. In a 2009 study, Britain’s Ryal Hrticultural Sciety fund that wmen’s vices helped make plants grw faster. In that experiment, tmat plants were fund t grw up t tw inches taller when they were tended t by a female gardener. Mre recently, an Australian study fund that sme flwers were able t sense nises, such as the flw f water thrugh a pipe.

What if we tld yu that a ptat chip bag left n the flr f a break rm culd listen in n ffice gssip? Yu’d think we were crazy, right? Think again. Researchers fund that as peple were talking arund the ptat chip bag, they were sending teeny-tiny sund vibratins (振动) int the air. Thse vibratins then hit inanimate bjects arund the rm. S next time yu’re at the gardens r in a grcery, be careful with what yu say. Smething might be listening.
    28. What did Israeli scientists discver in their research?

A grwing bdy f research is revealing assciatins between birth defects (缺陷) and a father’s age, alchl use and envirnmental factrs, say researchers at Gergetwn University Medical Center. They say these defects result frm epigenetic changes that can ptentially affect multiple generatins.
The study, published in the American Jurnal f Stem Cells, suggest bth parents cntribute t the health status f their ffspring — a cmmn sense cnclusin which science is nly nw beginning t demnstrate, says the study’s senir investigatr, Janna Kitlinska, PhD, an assciate prfessr in bichemistry, and mlecular and cellular bilgy.
“We knw the nutritinal, hrmnal and psychlgical envirnment prvided by the mther permanently influences rgan structure, cellular respnse and gene expressin in her ffspring,” she says.
“But ur study shws the same thing t be true with fathers — his lifestyle, and hw ld he is, can be reflected in mlecules that cntrl gene functin,” she says. “In this way, a father can affect nt nly his immediate ffspring, but future generatins as well.”
Fr example, a newbrn can be diagnsed with fetal (胎儿的) alchl spectrum disrder (FASD), even thugh the mther has never cnsumed alchl, Kitlinska says. “Up t 75 percent f children with FASD have bilgical fathers wh are alchlics, suggesting that precnceptual paternal alchl cnsumptin negatively impacts their ffspring.”
Advanced age f a father is crrelated with elevated rates f certain diseases, and birth defects in his children. A limited diet during a father’s preadlescence has been linked t reduced risk f cardivascular death in his children and grandchildren. Paternal besity is linked t enlarged fat cells, changes in metablic regulatin, diabetes, besity and develpment f brain cancer. Psychscial stress n the father is linked t defective behaviral traits in his ffspring. And paternal alchl use leads t decreased newbrn birth weight, marked reductin in verall brain size and impaired cgnitive functin.
“This new field f inherited paternal epigenetics needs t be rganized int clinically applicable recmmendatins and lifestyle alternatins,” Kitlinska says. “And t really understand the epigenetic influences f a child, we need t study the interplay between maternal and paternal effects, as ppsed t cnsidering each in islatin.”
    32. What’s the message the writer cnveys in the passage?
    A. Bth parents cntribute t the health status f their ffspring.
    B. Father’s age and lifestyle are tied t birth defects.
    C. Father plays a mre critical rle in birth defects.
    D. Birth defects can ptentially affect multiple generatins.
    33. What can we infer frm the example in Paragraph 5?
    A. FASD can nly be diagnsed in a newbrn whse father is addicted t alchl.
    B. A newbrn will nt cntract FASD if his mther has never cnsumed alchl.
    C. A father’s lifestyle can negatively impact his ffspring.
    D. Mst children have bilgical fathers wh are alchlics.
    34. Which f the fllwing situatins is less likely t lead t children’s birth defects?
    A. Having a father with a limited diet. B. Having a father wh is an alchlic.
    C. Having an verweight father. D. Having a father with psychscial stress.
    35. What will the research prbably cntinue t fcus n in the part that fllws?
    A. The maternal epigenetic influences f a child.
    B. The ways t avid negative paternal influence n children.
    C. The clinical applicatin f the research findings.
    D. The interactin between maternal and paternal effects.
