Sme earlier studies had fund n clear clr preference amng msquites (蚊子). One study fund they prefer blue, anther that they prefer yellw-green. What shuld peple make f such cnflicting results?
The apparent clr f an bject desn't just depend n the wavelengths f light it gives ff, Claire Rusch explains, wh studies msquites fr years. It als can be affected by the brightness f that light and its cntrast against surrunding clrs. Humans see an bject's clr largely in terms f the wavelengths f light it gives ff. But ther creatures' eyes may be mre sensitive t cntrast r brightness. “We needed t cntrl all f thse variables (变量) t really be sure a msquit's preferences came frm the wavelength f the bject,”Rusch says.
T d this, she designed a test chamber (室) that was 450 msquit-bdy-lengths lng in her experiment. Lined with cameras, it recrded the insects' flight patterns. Tw small clred disks laid n the flr f the chamber.
Since the researchers wanted t knw if msquites were attracted t certain clrs, the disks culdn't be the darkest r brightest bjects in the chamber. Otherwise, it wuld be unclear if the msquites were attracted t the disks' clr, cntrast r brightness. S, the researchers prjected a chessbard pattern nt the flr f the chamber and gray alng the walls. That way, if the msquites went t the clred disks, it culd nly be due t the disks' clr.
The researchers released abut 50 hungry msquites int the chamber at a time. Because msquites dn't start hunting until they've sensed CO₂, s the team sprayed (喷)CO₂ inside the chamber. They fund befre CO₂ was sprayed, the msquites ignred all the clr ed disks. With CO₂, msquites ignred any disk that was green, blue r purple. But the insects did fly tward disks that were red, range r light blue. They seemed t especially like red.
T further investigate that, the team placed disks with different skin tnes. But the msquites didn't seem t prefer any particular skin clrs. All were equally attractive.
28. What can be inferred abut msquites frm the first tw paragraphs?
A. The wavelengths determine the clr f an bject.
B. The backgrund clr affects msquites' eyesight.
&. Msquites' eyes are nt sensitive t clr cntrast.
D. Testing their clr preference is nt s easy.
29. What might affect the result f the experiment?
A. The length f the chamber. B. The number f msquites.
C. The brightness f the disks. D. The pattern f the chessbard.
30. Why is CO₂ used in the experiment?
A. T take clearer phts f msquites. B. T drive msquites t lk fr fd.
C. T slw dwn the speed f msquites. D. T raise the temperature in the chamber.
31. What can be Rusch's research finding?
A. Cl clrs can drive msquites away.
B. Skin clrs are msquites' favrite.
C. Peple in red may attract mst msquites.
D. All clrs are equally attractive t msquites.
D
“I like pigs,” Winstn Churchill suppsedly nce said .“Dgs lk up t us. Cats lk dwn n us. Pigs treat us as equals.” Whether Churchill's cntemprary Gerge Orwell als liked pigs is less clear. But he, t, surely saw smething in them that was lacking in many dmestic (驯养的)animals, fr it was they wh ended up running the shw in his nvel, Animal Farm. Pigs, then, are intelligent scial creatures.
And, like all animals, they smetimes fight. Sme pigs tend t be attackers; thers tend t be victims. Wh is what depends largely n weight. Amng pigs, punds mean pwer. The attacker might bite, kick r push the victim. Mst cnflicts end in secnds, but sme last a minute r tw.
In mst animal species fights wuld be like that. Hwever, many f the cnflicts amng pigs Dr. Nrscia, a bilgist, bserved had interested parties beynd the fighters. He therefre wanted t understand the rle f these bystanders in slving cnflicts—and what this says abut pigs 'cgnitive (认知的) abilities.
Since there was usually nt enugh time fr a bystander pig t becme invlved in the heat f a cnflict, thugh this did ccur, Dr. Nrscia lked at what happened in the three minutes immediately fllwing a fight. Smetimes, he fund, the fighters were recnciled with each ther n their wn. The mre distantly related the fighters were, the mre frequently this happened. Dr.Nrscia guessed that relatins between clse relatives are mre secure t start with, s rebuilding friendly relatins rapidly is less necessary fr them.
On ther ccasins, hwever, a third pi g stepped in. Smetimes this bystander interacted with the attacker t reduce the number f attacks cming after. Smetimes, the bystander interacted with the victim. This appeared t calm the victim dwn, fr it reduced anxiety-related behavir.
Scial intelligence need nt, thugh, be entirely selfless. Pigs are mre likely t step in after a cnflict if they are clsely related t either the attacker r the victim. This is prbably an example f kin selectin(亲属选择), which favrs the develpment f behavir.
32. Why are Churchill and Orwell mentined at the beginning?
A. T shw their preference fr pigs. B. T add sme related backgrunds.
C. T intrduce the tpic f the text. D. T present their attitude t animals.
33. What can we learn abut pigs' fights?
A T hey last a little bit lnger.
B. They happen mre ften in the wild.
G:Pigs with mre punds tend t be the victims.
D. There wuld nrmally be audiences during the fights.
34. What des the underlined wrd “recnciled” prbably mean in paragraph 4?
A. caught up. B. made up. C. kept in tuch. D. changed in tune.
35. Which f the fllwing reflects pigs' scial intelligence?
A. Offering cmfrt t victim pigs.
B. Frming special bnds with strangers.
C. Adjusting their behavir accrdingly.
D. Caring fr thers with selfless devtin.
