Rising levels f carbn dixide in the atmsphere are a majr cause f climate change, and nw a new study has cnfirmed that atmspheric CO2 is als affecting the cean chemistry and ptentially harming sea life.
Mntana State University scientist Rbert Dre has been researching the water in the Pacific Ocean fr almst tw decades.
“We’ve been ging t the same spt in the Pacific Ocean, and we try and characterize lng-term change in the pen cean envirnment. And ne f the key things that we measure is CO2 levels. And we’ve been able t recrd this increasing quantity f atmspheric CO2 int the cean.”
Scientists expected that as atmspheric CO2 increased, mre and mre f the carbn dixide wuld be absrbed int the cean, affecting the chemical balance f the sea water, with a ptentially harmful impact n shellfish and cral in particular.
“As carbn dixide disslves (溶解) in the water, r seawater in this case, it frms a weak acid (酸), carbnic acid, ” Dre explains. “And therefre, as the cncentratin f CO2 in the atmsphere ges up and that exchanges with the surface seawater, it drives the pH dwn, and makes it mre acidic.”
The seawater Dre and his clleagues have analyzed cnfirms what the thery predicts.
The effect was particularly striking at abut 250 meters dwn, and again at 500 meters. Dre and his clleagues came up with tw pssible explanatins. It culd be that surface water picked up CO2 and then mved t thse depths. Or there culd be a bilgical explanatin.
