Kevlar (纤维B), a very strng artificial material which high temperature desn’t damage, is fund tday in hundreds f prducts. It was invented by a research chemist named Stephanie Kwlek. In her jb, she develped the first liquid crystal plymer (聚合体), a chemical prduct that frmed the basis fr Kevlar. In 1946 she gt a jb with the DuPnt chemical cmpany and jined a DuPnt research grup in 1960 t search fr a way t make a material strng enugh t use n autmbile tyres. If tyres culd be imprved, autmbiles wuld need less fuel. Ms Kwlek needed a new way t make stiff and resistant fibers fr the jb. Her experiments n the prject shuld prduce a clear substance similar t thick syrup(糖浆). Instead, she prduced a cludy r milky liquid, which was mre firm than anything she had made befre. The substance passed the test. Kwlek was afraid there might have been a mistake. Repeating testing it, hwever, she didn’t find anything wrng. She and her grup wrked t imprve the discvery. DuPnt first manufactured large amunts f Kevlar
    in 1971.
Getting Kevlar placed in prtective clthing resulted mainly frm the wrk f Lester Shubin and Nichlas Mntanarelli. In the 1970s, the tw Amercians were wrking fr the United States army. They were searching fr a way t prtect peple in public life frm gunfire. Mr. Mntanarelli knew abut DuPnt’s recently develped fiber, and the tw men decided t test it. The men fired handguns at several materials which were prtected by Kevlar. The material changed the shape f the bullets. It seemed a gd candidate t help defend plice fficers and sldiers. S thusands f plice fficers in many cities began t wear the vests. But it was difficult t get cmpanies t make them, because cmpanies feared legal actin if the vests shuld fail. Then in December, 1975 a gunman sht at a pliceman in Seattle. One bullet struck the fficer’s chest but didn’t enter his bdy. The incident made manufacturers begin t prduce masses f the vests.
Tday, abut three thusand peple are members f the Kevlar Survivrs’ Club. All the members have escaped injury r death because f Kevlar.

A United Natins news service reprted in Octber that Niger's gvernment said the campaign had already reclaimed three millin hectares (公顷). Teams f wrkers have used simple methds such as planting trees and prtecting natural vegetatin t save land frm being lst t desert. Ten t twenty times mre trees were reprted in parts f suthern Niger in 2005 than there were thirty years earlier.
Sme reclaimed land can nw be farmed again. The land became infertile during the 1970’s and early 80’s. But abut twenty years ag,lcal farmers recgnized that their nce-prductive sil was being carried away by severe winds.
Trees were traditinally cut dwn fr firewd r cleared fr agriculture. Instead f clearing trees, farmers began t let them grw amng their crps. At the same time, rainfall levels began t rise after a lng dry perid. Tday, the rate f desert expansin in Niger is drpping and the amunt f harvested crps is up.
The success f the effrt suggests that earlier damage t the Sahel may nt have been permanent. And sme say it culd put Niger in a better psitin t deal with whatever effects climate change might bring.
