It is easy fr us t tell wh ur family members are, but d plants recgnize their wn family? Sme d, scientists say, accrding t a reprt by Science News in early 2010.
Guillerm P. Murphy and Susan Dudley are tw plant scientists frm McMaster University in Hamiltn, Canada. They did a few experiments with Jewelweeds, a kind f flwer that grws in wet, shady spts. They fund that the flwers seem t knw their wn flwer family. In their experiments, Murphy and Dudley planted jewelweeds in pts with either siblings (同属) r strangers.
When jewelweeds were planted in pts with strangers, the plants started t grw mre leaves than if they had been planted alne. This respnse suggests that plants are cmpeting with strangers fr sunlight, since a plant with mre leaves can receive mre light and make mre fd. Jewelweeds nrmally grw in the shade, where sunlight is scarce.
When jewelweed seedlings were planted with siblings, they grew a few mre branches than they nrmally wuld if they were alne – but they did nt start grwing lts f extra leaves. This behavir suggests the plants are mre likely t share resurces, rather than cmpete.
Accrding t the Science News reprt, Jewelweeds are nt the first plants that plant scientists have studied fr family recgnitin. In 2007, Dudley and her team studied the Great Lakes sea rcket, a plant that grws n the beach – where it may be hard t get fresh water. In that experiment, the scientists bserved that when sea rckets were planted with siblings, they tlerated each ther. But when they were planted with strangers, the sea rckets reacted by wrking extra hard t grw lts f rts.
Dudley says this behavir makes sense because sea rckets, n the beach, get plenty f sun but struggle fr water – s when they’re threatened, they cmpete fr water. Jewelweeds have plenty f water but have t cmpete fr sunshine, s they grw mre leaves.
    52. When the McMaster University scientists experimented with Jewelweeds, they __________.
    A. planted Jewelweeds alne
    B. separated jewelweeds frm their siblings
    C. planted Jewelweeds in an unusual envirnment

    C. cannt recgnize their siblings D. grw mre leaves when planted with strangers
