Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone is open year-round to visitors, though experiences differ depending on the season you visit.
March-May: Snow can continue to fall into March and many of the roads may remain closed, with ploughing usually beginning some time in April. Hiking conditions at this time are wet. You won’t find many crowds, for good reason.
June-August: The busiest time of year in the park is July and August, as families arrive in their droves and temperatures rise up into the mid-20s (℃). Backcountry trails are fully open and this is the ideal time to go hiking.
September-October: By September, the weather is pretty mild (highs of 19℃ in September). Bears can be spotted by roadside as they try desperately to fatten up before winter.
November-February: Temperatures can drop below zero, but this also yields some unique experiences. Elk and bison are already migrating in impressive herds and this is a great time for wolf spotting-their dark coats are much easier to see against a white backdrop of snow. Wolf-tracking trips are a must.
Cost of travel
Entrance fees for Yellowstone are £16 for individuals and an additional £30 for a car. Campsites vary in price, costing as little as £12.50 per night.
Accommodation
During the peak summer months, prices rise and rooms are booked up long in advance. In winter just a handful of the park’s lodges remain open.
21. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A research report. B. A science newspaper.
C. A travel brochure. D. A geography textbook.
22. Which month is most suitable for hiking in Yellowstone National Park?
A. July. B. April. C. October. D. November.
23. How much should a couple driving a car pay for entrance fees?
A. £46. B. £44.5. C. £32. D. £62.

From his uptown Manhattan home, Samir Kumar can usually see skyscrapers downtown. But this week, as smoke from wildfires raging in the western United States and Canada stretched all the way to the East Coast, the city skyline was invisible.
Currently, nearly 300 wildfires are burning in British Columbia and about 80 are blazing through states in the U.S. West. The fires get worse due to heat waves and prolonged drought in the west, two weather patterns made more extreme by climate change.
As the smoke spreads across the country and exposes millions of people, the health impact becomes more widespread among the most vulnerable. In addition to causing respiratory (呼吸的) problems, the smoke can lead to poor heart health. What’s more, smoke from wildfires could make it harder for people to fight off COVID-19 infections and the emerging variants because their immune systems are already battling pollution. Studies have shown that people exposed to air pollution are more likely to die from COVID-19.
For the first time in its history as a state, California’s population is decreasing. Falling birth rates, high housing prices, and high taxes have been factors for years, and COVID-19 has exacerbated the trend, delaying planned moves into the state. Many survivors of wildfires have also chosen to rebuild indifferent states. “If I was starting to raise children...I probably would leave this state,” says Hertz-Picciotto, a director of the university’s health science center. She plans to spend several weeks during the height of wildfire season in August away from her home in northern California, where wildfires have become common.
Reducing air pollution from wildfire smoke in California and the rest of the country will require reducing the number and size of wildfires themselves. Lawmakers have introduced laws aimed at better managing forests, training more firefighters, and making infrastructure more fire resistant.
“Ultimately until we stop burning fossil fuels, I don’t see why it’s not going to get worse. It certainly can’t get better,” says Hertz-Picciotto.
24. What’s the function of Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the spread of wildfires. B. To demonstrate the threat of wildfires.
C. To describe the situation of wildfires. D. To explain the concern of wildfires.
25. What worsens wildfires?
A. Extreme weather. B. Climate types.
C. Human activities. D. Climate models.
26. What is the effect of wildfire smoke according to the text?
A. Common respiratory issues. B. Emerging infectious diseases.
C. Strong immune systems. D. California’s population growth.
27. What is advised to tackle wildfires?
A. Fighting fire with fire. B. Moving away from home.
C. Avoiding exposure to fires. D. Prohibiting fossil fuels use.
C
Whether or not you want an electric vehicle in your driveway, you might soon spot one showing up on your neighborhood.
All major delivery companies are starting to replace their gas-powered fleets (车队) with electric or low-emission vehicles, a switch that companies say will boost their bottom lines, while also fighting climate change and urban pollution.
UPS has placed an order for 10,000 electric delivery vehicles. Amazon is buying 100,000 from the start-up Rivian. DHL says zero-emission vehicles make up a fifth of its fleet, with more to come. And FedEx has just been seeking the goal of replacing 100% of its pickup and delivery fleet with battery-powered vehicles by 2040.
“I think we’ve just started to reach the turning point where we are slowly getting rid of gas-powered delivery trucks and vans,” Mitch Jackson, the chief sustainability officer for FedEx, says.
Switching to electric vehicles for shorter distances makes a lot of sense for companies like FedEx.
Compared to the 18-wheelers that carry packages between states, delivery vehicles — typically vans and smaller trucks — are much easier to electrify, with current battery technology providing enough range for many routes. And companies also have plenty of charging time. Jackson calls it an “ideal situation.”
“If you think about it, our vehicles operate throughout the day picking up and delivering our customers goods,” Jackson says. “And in the evening, they come back to our stations and they’ll be parked there overnight.”
And, while electric vehicles are still expensive up front, Jackson says this switch will also serve the bottom line. Electric vehicles save money on fuel, and because they have fewer moving parts, they’re also cheaper to maintain, which means they are profitable in the long run “And for sure, they emit zero green-house gases. Our community will definitely love them,” adds Jackson.
28 Which of the following is NOT a delivery company?
A. UPS. B. Rivian. C. DHL. D. FedEx.
29. Which of the following statements may Mitch Jackson agree to?
A. Electric vehicles like the 18-wheelers can carry more and be easily charged.
B. Electric vehicles are charged during the parking time.
C Electric vehicles need improve their battery technology badly.
D. Electric vehicles discourage delivery companies due to their cost.
30. The underlined phrase “the bottom line” in the last paragraph means .
A. the final profit B. the final goal to pursue
C. the last thing to bear D. the most important point
31. What is the writing purpose of this passage?
A. To prove an idea. B. To confirm a concept.
C To introduce a trend. D. To describe an event.
D
Playing a rhythm-based game for eight weeks helps non-musicians become better at remembering recently seen faces. This suggests that learning to play an instrument could improve short-term memory for non-musical tasks.
There have been several studies showing that musicians tend to have better short-term memory than non-musicians when it comes to music-related tasks, such as remembering musical sequences. It is less clear whether these benefits carry over to non-musical tasks or to non-musicians who are learning to play an instrument, and how these changes might actually be seen in the brain.
Theodore Zanto at the University of California, San Francisco, and his colleagues, randomly assigned a group of 47 non-musicians, aged between 60 and 79, to play either a tablet-based musical rhythm training game, which emulates (模仿) learning to hit a drum in time with a teacher, or a word game for eight weeks.
At the start and end of the eight weeks, participants took a short-term memory test to measure their ability to remember a face they saw seconds before. Only the group who played the rhythm training game showed an improvement on their initial scores of around 4 percent. This suggests, says Zanto, that the rhythm training is improving the brain’s ability to focus attention on a task to get it ready for transforming what you are doing into memory.
The ability to remember and recognise faces tends to decline as we age, so any possible mechanism to turn that the opposite way is important, says Josh Davis at the University of Greenwich, UK. However, the effect demonstrated in this study needs to be shown in real-world facial recognition scenarios as well as in lab-based tests to be completely convincing, says Davis. Theodore Zanto hopes that extending training period beyond eight weeks may lead to a stronger effect on memory recall.
32. What can we know in the first two paragraphs?
A. Musicians are good at remembering tasks.
B. Musicians can easily change their memory.
C. Musicians are more likely to memorize musical tasks.
D. Musicians have better memories than non-musicians.
33. Why can rhythmed games benefit memory improvement?
A. The control of attentional aspect of memory.
B. The enhancement of the brain’s ability to focus on a task.
C. The increase of the ability to remember and recognize face.
D. The transformation of what people do into memory.
34. What can we infer from Josh Davis’ comments?
A. The rhythm games are sure to boost memory.
B. Measures have been taken to avoid memory loss.
C. The effect of playing instruments remains to be seen.
D. The extending training can certainly affect memory.
35 What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Playing musical games improves the memory.
B. Playing musical games stops memory decline.
C. Playing an instrument benefits face recognition.
D. Playing an instrument boosts short-term memory.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a warm summer evening in Surat, my wife and I were on our way to the grocery store, when I noticed a man sitting on the pavement under a street light. Something about him made me stop. He sat motionless, his steady gaze fixed on an object only he could see. His beard was long and untidy, much like the matted hair on his head. An abandoned advertisement banner(横幅) hung loosely around his waist was his only protection from the environment. The vacant look in his eyes indicated he was possibly incapable of normal mental function.
We tried asking him a few questions, but he showed no signs of having heard or understood us. He just sat there, staring into the darkness, unaware of our presence. It was quite apparent that he was in need of help and we thought a while about what we could do. “He looks hungry,” my wife remarked, “but there is no point in giving him money.” I agreed. “Let’s buy him a loaf of bread instead,” I suggested.
It took us a while to finish our shopping. When we returned to the spot where we had first seen the man, he wasn’t there. We looked around, but there was no sign of him. Disappointed, we decided to go home, wondering what to do with the loaf of bread.
We’d barely gone a hundred meters when we spotted him. Driven by hunger, he had crossed the road and was seated with a family of migrant labours, who had camped there. They were workers who were tired out from a long day work under the boiling summer sun and struggled to support family. Surprisingly, none of the family members seemed to mind his presence. In fact, he looked to be quite welcome. The family had accepted him without question, just as they would a visiting relative or a close friend. Curious, I stopped my motorcycle in the shadows and watched.

I feel so honored/privileged to deliver a speech themed Living With Exam Anxiety.
Almost everyone will feel nervous when faced with an exam. Too much anxiety affects our academic performance. For example, we find it hard to focus on questions, or demonstrate our knowledge during the exam.
Therefore, I suggest getting regular sleep and exercise, which is vital for concentration and memory. In addition, we should get rid of negative thoughts so that we can manage our stress when taking an exam. Thank you. (88 words)
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】It was dinner time when a lady was roasting meat over an open fire with her family. As she rolled and roasted more meat, she handed the beggar a share, keeping an eye on him to make sure that his plate was not empty. The beggar was eating hungrily from an aluminum plate. She smiled as she watched him dig into the food clumsily, dropping every other share on to his chest and then to the ground. The other members of the family chatted happily as they ate, the meat disappearing faster than the cheerful lady could make them. (82 words)
