The Sahara Desert is unsurprisingly seen as a wasteland. But actually there is a variety f life frms, accrding t André Vicente Liz, a dctral candidate at the University f Prt in Prtugal, wh led a study explring Saharan animal species.
In the desert, cld-blded creatures grw well because their bdy temperatures adjust t the temperature f their surrundings as they mve frm intense sunlight int cl undergrund hles. Liz has bserved many small lizard (蜥蜴) species alng with snakes, beetles, ants, and even frgs. Besides them, antelpes, camels, cheetahs and desert fxes are just sme f the warm-blded animals that can survive in the Sahara. But what leads t the vast bidiversity f the Sahara?
One factr is the big changes in the desert’s climate. Abut 6,000 years ag, there was abundant rainfall in certain areas f the Sahara. Grasslands and lakes made ideal living places fr animals and humans. Due t climate changes, the grasslands changed t a desert later, which made it impssible fr humans t exist there. Hwever, many animals still survived there.
Anther ne is its diverse landscapes. There are sme areas, such as rck pls knwn as “gueltas”, where bidiversity is especially high because they act as shelter fr species that have t flee frm their habitats due t a sudden, intlerable change in weather. In the face f climate change, Liz and his clleagues are studying “gueltas” clsely t find ut what makes them gd spts fr survival. “These areas are knwn as gathering places fr bidiversity and are especially interesting fr cnservatin planning in the current cntext f climate emergency, where they can play a key rle in supprting varius species,” Liz said.
Deserts may seem lifeless, but in fact many species have develped special ways t survive in the tugh envirnments.
    24. What did Liz find abut the Sahara Desert?
    A. It is hme t diverse creatures.
    B. It has rws f undergrund hles.
    C. It is experiencing a great change in climate.
    D. It has a lnger histry than previusly thught.
    25. Why can “gueltas” act as shelter?
    A. They are abundant in life frms.
    B. They are usually near animals’ habitats.
    C. They are less affected by climate change.
    D. They are rck pls with high bidiversity.
    26. What des André Vicente Liz prbably think f studying “gueltas”?
    A. Bring. B. Meaningful. C. Challenging D. Creative.
    27. Which f the fllwing shws the structure f the whle text?

Engaging yur brain actively at wrk can benefit yu in mre ways than just advancing yur career— it may als safeguard yur cgnitive(认知的) abilities and help prevent dementia(痴呆症) as yu get lder, a new study fund.
The study, published in Neurlgy, analyzed health and ccupatinal data n 7,000 Nrwegians wh were fllwed frm their 30s until they retired in their 60s.“ Many ther studies n this tpic have lked at the mst recent jbs that peple have,” said lead authr Dr. Trine Edwin, a researcher at University f Osl,“ but due t the natinal database we have in Nrway. we were able t fllw peple ver much f their lifetimes.”
T d the analysis, Edwin categrized the cgnitive demands f 305 ccupatins in Nrway. Mre cgnitively demanding jbs were nt based n rutine tasks, even thugh repetitin was required at times.“ There were lawyers, dctrs, accuntants, and peple in public service in this grup, but the mst cmmn ccupatin was teaching,” Edwin said,“ as effective cmmunicatin utside f the classrm and schl matters. It always depends n teachers' understandings f students' different situatins and teachers' empathy.”
Having a rutine jb with little mental stimulatin during yur 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s is linked t a 66% higher risk f mild cgnitive impairment(损伤) and a 37% greater risk f dementia after the age f 70, when cmpared with having an ccupatin - that requires mre cmplex thinking.“ The ccupatinal envirnment is paramunt in prmting cgnitive well- being.” said Edwin.“ Similarly, just like we can use physical exercise t grw and maintain ur muscles, exercising ur brain thrugh mre challenging wrk assignments seems t help fight dementia.”
“ While I'd guess that peple at risk fr dementia wuld be well served by taking advantage f prfessinal advancement pprtunities, learning new jb tasks, and refining(改进) their skills at wrk ver a perid f time, further studies will need t clarify which specific activities have the mst brain healthy benefits,” Edwin added.
    28. Why is Edwin's research remarkable?
    A. Because it fcused n emerging industries.
    B. Because it tracked a lng- term ccupatin impact.
    C. Because it nly studied Nrwegians f a certain age.
    D. Because it drew much inspiratin frm past studies.
    29. What makes teaching a cgnitively demanding jb?
    A. The cmplete lack f repetitive tasks.
    B. The number f students and parents.
    C. The harmnius relatinship it creates.
    D. The emtinal labr it invlves.
    30. What des“ paramunt” underlined in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Vital. B. Urgent.
    C. Realistic. D. Sufficient.
31.Wat des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
    A. activities that can refine peple's skills at wrk.
B.. A recmmendatin fr future research directins.
    C. Tips fr peple wh want prfessinal advancement.
    D. Disadvantages f rutine jbs that need further prf.

We live in an imprtant time fr language revitalizatin (复兴). Mre than half the wrld’s languages are in danger f being swallwed by dminant languages within this century. That’s why the United Natins declared 2022 - 2032 the Internatinal Decade f Indigenus (本土的) Languages.
But turning the trend f language extinctin is n easy task. We knw that t keep languages alive, we have t create an immersive envirnment. A gd example f the immersin methd is “language nests”, where little kids and ther beginners learn frm fluent elders n a regular basis. One f the first language nests was started in New Zealand in 1982 by Mari elders wh wrried that their language, culture, and even pride were disappearing. The elders decided t teach children their native tngue thrugh culturally relevant sng and play.
The language nest mdel was s successful that it migrated t Hawaii and then thrughut the wrld. Language nests are typically physical spaces but can als be fund nline.
While immersin prgrams can have excellent utcmes, they require significant funding and resurces t remain sustainable ver time. The lack f capacity makes it hard: nt enugh cntent, training, and teachers. Peple dn’t realize the cst f revitalizing languages and what it wuld cst t run entire educatinal systems in these languages. T establish the institutins, t train the peple, and t make sure the prper techniques are in place t write and read in the languages are huge challenges.
Areas where ne indigenus language has the mst influence — such as Mari r Hawaiian may have an advantage because they begin with a fairly large speaker base and can fcus funding, teacher training, and resurces n that language. But cuntries with a high level f language diversity face a serius challenge. Hwever, whatever it takes, it’s wrthwhile fr cmmunities t preserve their ancestral tngues fr generatins t cme.
    32. What’s a language nest?
    A. It’s the cultural cntents a language carries.
    B. It’s a place where diverse languages are spken.
    C. It’s an immersive language learning envirnment
    D. It’s an area whse indigenus language is endangered.
    33. What des paragraph 4 mainly tell us abut the immersin prgrams?
    A. Their ppularity.B. Their significance.
    C. Their challenges.D. Their cnsequences.
    34. As fr language revitalizatin, which area is disadvantaged?
    A. An area where funding is evenly distributed.
    B. An area with a high level f language diversity.
    C. An area with a passin fr multiple ancestral tngues.
    D. An area where ne indigenus language has the greatest influence.
    35. What’s the best title f the text?
    A. Revitalizing Rare LanguagesB. Adpting Language Nests
    C. Swallwing Minr LanguagesD. Creating New Language Prgrams

The Summer I Learned t Really See
It was a muggy(闷热)end-f-summer dg day in Missuri. I was preparing t g after the mail—abut a mile's distance, thrugh fields and frests, acrss a river, frm ur farmhuse, in which three generatins f my family lived.
“Take the bucket with yu,” my grandmther said, handing me the very familiar bucket.
“What fr?” I asked, petulantly(使小性子). The berries had been picked, and it was t early fr wild grapes, t late fr rasting ears(穗).
“Yu'll find smething t fill it with,” she said, her blue eyes sparkling with anticipatin.
I didn't want t take the bucket. It wuld be a burden t me. Twice a day I'd carried a bucket fr milking. With it I'd carried feed t the chickens, salt t the cws, sugar t the neighbrs. I'd had enugh with carrying with the bucket!
Nevertheless, I tk the bucket. Halfway t the mailbx, I set it dwn beneath a pkeberry bush(胡桃树). I needn't carry it the whle way, I reasned. There was n mail. When I gt back t the bucket, I saw that a few ripe pkeberries had fallen int it. With childish ill humr, I picked ff enugh clusters(花串) t fill the bucket, even thugh I thught they were gd fr nthing.
“Aren't they just lvely!” Grandma exclaimed admiringly when I set them n the kitchen table. She squeezed ut the juice f the berries and we used the lvely red ink t paint rings n ur fingers and pen letters t distant cusins.
When I went t mail the letters the next day, Grandma again tld me t take the bucket alng. This time I carried the bucket a little farther than the previus day befre setting it dwn. There was nly a sale catalgue in the mail. When I gt back t the bucket, I drpped it in. But I felt vaguely uncmfrtable, remembering the pkeberries. I caught sight f a bunch f peppermint(薄荷) grwing clse t the path. Funny, I had passed it every day and never nticed it befre. Peppermint just desn't spring up vernight. I picked a bucketful, its fragrance seeming t cl the day. Grandma was pleased with the peppermint. She liked t chew it and make tea with it.
