There is an embridered (刺绣的) saying that has hung n the wall in my parents’ huse, declaring “I hpe my children lk back n tday and see a parent wh had time t play. There will be years fr cleaning and cking, but children grw up when we’re nt lking.”
The saying made me uneasy as a parent, particularly during the year I turned 38 with my wn three daughters, since I culd be bth aware f the future ‒ when my children will leave ‒ and yet unable t appreciate every single mment.
Parents admit that they are nt always lking. Yet the mther in the embridery is fully present with her children. She has left the husewrk at hme and cme ut here t be with her three children, wh are thrwing red and gld leaves at her, like the pht my father tk fr us n a weekend uting. All f us are laughing heartily.
My mther said she sewed the embridery because she embraced the philsphy and spent time playing with her children. Yet I remember my mther driving me t the mall, the mvies, the friends’ huses but I struggle t remember her playing with me. I nce tk my yung children t the library strytimes, t the children’s museum and I dutifully fllwed them arund. Hwever, they recall nne f it. All thse years I invested in making my children feel lved and nne f the memries have stayed with them.
Then there are years fr cleaning and cking, and I d nt always have time t play. Cleaning and cking is part f being a parent, part f caretaking, part f hw I shw lve. I remember my mther cleaning and cking. When I think f all the meals she made fr us and ur clthes she washed, I knw that’s a mther’s lve language.
I suppse that is why the embridery exists. The embridered saying is a mther’s lve fr her children, which is always lking.

A. Her regrets abut her life. B. The time wasted n the children.
C. Her mther’s false memry. D. A mther’s unremembered devtin.
26. Hw des the authr view cleaning and cking as a mther?
A. Necessary tasks that she wishes she culd avid.
B. Burdens that take away frm time with her children.
C. A way t express her lve and care fr her family.
D. A surce f happy memries frm her childhd.
27. Which f the fllwing is the best title f this text?
A. She Is Always Lking B. An Inspiring Saying

If yu were like the 847 U.S. cnsumers surveyed in a University f Massachusetts Amherst study, yu’d prefer glass and believe it was the mst sustainable chice. And yu all wuld be mistaken.
“Glass was the mst sught-after and mst highly valued packaging type,” says Nmzam Dlamini, lead authr f the paper and a Ph.D. schlar in fd science. “Hwever, it turns ut that glass is amng the least sustainable.”
Cnsumers ranked packaging chices frm mst t least sustainable as fllws: glass, cartn (纸板), canned, and plastic. But in the case f single-serve range juice, the mst sustainable chice is actually a cartn, fllwed by plastic, then canned, and finally, glass, despite that fd packaging sustainability can vary depending n ther factrs like cntainer and weight.
Lifecycle assessments by experts indicate that prducing and recycling glass requires significantly mre energy cmpared t plastic, which nt nly has lwer prductin and end-f-life impacts but is als lighter, reducing transprtatin energy. Additinally, the steam aseptic sealing (无菌密封) prcess fr plastic cntainers is mre energy-efficient cmpared t the retrt (蒸馏) system used fr glass.
Using a questinnaire that mdels real-life situatins where cnsumers evaluate varius ptins and make trade-ffs, Dlamini aimed t figure ut what cnsumers believe and prefer abut packaging chices.
Dlamini pints ut a mismatch: while many cnsumers intend t purchase sustainable packaging, in the end the tp mtivating factr was price—particularly the lwest price—fllwed by packaging type, prduct claim and packaging claim. S, the ideal range juice ptin fr cnsumers, based n the survey, is priced at $1.10 per 12 z, packaged in glass, lcally prduced and labelled as 100% recyclable.
The message t the fd industry is that cnsumers are mtivated t chse sustainable packaging, as lng as the price is right. “These ptins shuld be distinctly marked as envirnmentally friendly, effective and affrdable t increase cnsumers’ mtivatin and adptin f sustainable packaging fr fd and drinks,” the paper states.
What was believed t be the least sustainable packaging ptin by US cnsumers?
A. Canned. B. Glass.C. Plastic. D. Cartn.
What is a feature f plastic accrding t Paragraph 4?
A. It is cheap t prduce.B. It allws light t pass thrugh.C. It takes less energy t recycle.D. It is mre flexible t be packed.
Accrding t Paragraph 6, there is a disagreement between _______.
A. packaging claim and scientific facts.
B. high price and unsatisfactry quality.
C. prduct claim and their practical perfrmance.
D. cnsumers’ intentins and their actual behavir.
What des Dlamini suggest the fd industry d in the last paragraph?
A. Price smartly and prmte widely.
B. Label clearly and price reasnably.
C. Package securely and deliver quickly.
D. Research effectively and invest wisely.

“Hliday” r “vacatin,” “my friend’s cat” r “the cat f my friend” — in ur language, there are different ways f expressing the same things and cncepts. But can these chices affect ur inclinatin t cperate with certain individuals? A research team led by Theresa Matzinger frm the University f Vienna investigated this and fund that peple are mre likely t team up with thse wh use similar linguistic (语言的) expressins in a cnversatin.
In an experiment, 100 English-speaking study participants each described pictures fr tw cnversatin partners. The pictures shwed situatins that the participants culd describe using tw different grammatical cnstructins that meant the same thing, such as “Jhn gives Mary the bk” r “Jhn gives the bk t Mary.” Next, the participants’ rles were switched and they received picture descriptins f their partners. Finally, when they had t decide whm they wanted t cperate with fr a subsequent game, mst participants chse peple wh spke similarly and used the same grammatical cnstructin.
In a fllw-up experiment with the same participants, researchers tried t get a better sense f this phenmenn. They questined whether it was due t recgnizing similar speakers as part f their scial grup, which enhanced cperatin, r because similar speech indicated a willingness t adjust ne’s behavir t fit with thers. This time, participants had t name pictures using the grammatical cnstructin that sunded less natural t them. When chsing cperatin partners afterward, they favred thse wh matched their natural language use ver thse wh resembled (相似) the language they used in the experiment. This suggests that a sense f belnging t the same scial grup, based n natural linguistic expressin, is the mre decisive factr in chsing cperatin partners.
“Our study shws that even small linguistic differences can affect the way we recgnize and respnd t thers,” Matzinger summarizes. The researchers hpe t use the results t better understand hw cperative decisins are made within linguistically diverse grups and help reduce prejudices against peple wh speak differently.
What des the underlined wrd “inclinatin” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. technique B. preference
C. perfrmance D. respnsibility
What can be learned abut the first experiment?
A. It allws the use f multiple languages.
B. It prvides pictures with pen interpretatins.
C. It evaluates participants n their grammar use.
D. It invlves taking turns with picture descriptins.
What des similar language use indicate cncerning partners?
A. A friendly character. B. A cperative attitude.
C. A cmmn scial identity. D. A high level f adaptability.
Where can the findings f the study be applied t?
A. Public speeches n TV.B. Crss-cultural team building.
C. Standardized academic exams.D. Human-cmputer cnversatins.

39 Fr instance, the 2012 Lndn Olympics medals featured the River Thames and Lndn skyline. Ri 2016 fcused n sustainability by using leftver mirrrs and X-ray plates. Tky 2020 medals, made frm recycled electrnics, emphasized technlgical innvatin.
Fr the Paris 2024 Olympics, the medals are particularly distinctive. Each features a hexagn (六边形) with the Paris 2024 lg n ne side and Nike, the Greek gddess f victry, in frnt f the Eiffel Twer n the ther. 40 As Thierry Rebul, creative directr f Paris 2024, stated, “These medals ffer athletes a physical piece f Paris t take hme.”

F. Unique t this year, the medals use metal frm the Eiffel Twer.
G. The design f medals reflects the hst city’s distinct style and values.

“Lighten up,” Tyrne cheered me, “It’s suppsed t be fun.”
But fun was the last thing n my mind. I was the newcmer, the city kid wh culdn’t swim like the rest, and my incmpetence was nw csting us the cmpetitin.
The next event, the Ping-Png Derby, was anther disaster. It required bravery fr me even t enter the water f a lake this big, with real live fish and a dirty bttm. I always held my breath whenever I stuck my tes in. I culdn’t relax lng enugh t blw the silly ball t my teammate. Standing next t my tw expert friends, I felt like that green sticky stuff in the water: unwanted, and nt particularly useful.
Just then, Captain Dale checked his clipbard (写字夹板) and then annunced ludly, “Final race is wrth twenty-five pints. It decides the winner. That’s the Alligatr Race!”
I was met with a mix f dread and curisity.
“Dn’t wrry t much,” Tyrne said. “Here’s the deal. Three kids are n their backs, hanging n t each ther. The first guy uses his arms. The secnd hlds his legs. The third hlds the secnd guy’s legs but kicks his wn legs. All tgether it lks like a giant alligatr racing in the water. First team acrss the finish line wins.”
“Lk, guys,” I sighed, feeling verwhelmed and wanting t quit, “I have t tell yu smething.”
“We knw,” Tyrne said.
“Yu can’t swim, right?” Brian asked.
I decided t tell the truth. “I can swim-a little. In a pl. Nt t well, but gd enugh. I’m just s nervus here. All I’m ding is hlding my breath and hping fish aren’t —”
Brian bunced arund in excitement, “We’re ging t win!”

Dear Jhn,
Hpe this email finds yu well. I am writing t share my thughts n the prpsed grup presentatin fr the English Literature Mnth.
I believe that a grup presentatin wuld be an excellent way t shwcase ur reading achievements. It encurages cllabratin and allws students t learn frm each ther's perspectives, which can lead t a deeper understanding f the texts. Additinally, wrking in grups helps students develp their cmmunicatin and teamwrk skills, which are invaluable in academic and prfessinal settings.
