    Nt Waving but Drwning
    Stevie Smith (1902-1971)
Nbdy heard him, the dead man, but still he lay maning:
I was much further ut than yu thught, and nt waving but drwning.
Pr chap, he always lved larking, and nw he's dead.
It must have been t cld fr him, his heart gave away, they said.
Oh, n n n, it was t cld always (Still the dead ne lay maning).
I was much t far ut all my life, and nt waving but drwning.
‘Nt Waving But Drwning’ by Stevie Smith describes the emtinal situatin f a speaker whse true sufferings g unnticed by all thse arund her. The pem begins with the speaker stating that there is a dead man wh is nt really dead. He is nt dead because his stry has mre t ffer t the wrld. His death came at the hands f apathy. The speaker knws this t be true as she is struggling ut in the cean waters. She’s trying desperately t get smene’s attentin but all the nlkers believe her t be “waving” rather than “drwning”. Then the speaker criticizes the emtinless reactin f the beach-gers by describing their wrds regarding the dead man. They see him, attempt t recall smething abut his life, and then declare him dead casually. They believe that it must have been “t cld” fr him and that his heart gave ut. The speaker cntinues t say that it has always been “t cld” fr her. She has always been t far ut t the sea t make peple understand her, especially nw when she needs understanding the mst.
On the surface the pem is abut a man wh drwns because his mvements are mistaken fr friendly waving. Taken less literally, hwever, it speaks t the pain f being misunderstd and the frequent failure f cmmunicatin between human beings, clsely related t which is its ptential suggestin f mental illness. That is, the pem can be taken as an extended metaphr fr the specific pain f diseases like depressin, which makes the man feel like “drwning” yet unable t effectively ask fr help. It’s wrth nting here that Smith herself struggled with depressin fr much f her life, and her wn experience likely infrmed the pem. The man’s mistaken gestures, in this reading, indicate the divide between appearance and reality, between hw peple dealing with such illness are feeling inside and hw the wrld sees them r hw they present themselves t the wrld.
    19. What’s the first paragraph mainly abut?
    A. An intrductin f the pet herself.
    B. An explanatin f the pem’s cntent.
    C. An appreciatin f the pem’s images.
    D. An analysis f the pem’s creatin backgrund.
    20. What des the underlined wrd pssibly mean?
    A. Indifference.B. Sympathy.C. Integrity.D. Impatience.
    21. What brader theme des the pem explre?
    A. The dangers f drwning fr a lng time.
    B. The imprtance f using crrect mvements.
    C. The cnsequences f making mistakes frequently.
    D. The struggle t cmmunicate with peple effectively.
    22. What can we infer frm this text?
    A. Peple usually believe what they see and hear.
    B. Peple can’t turn a blind eye t whever is in truble.
    C. Peple shuld relate t what thse in need truly need.
    D. Peple with mental illnesses must help themselves ut.
    C
“The wrld’s envirnment is surprisingly healthy. Discuss.” If that were an examinatin tpic, mst students wuld tear it apart, ffering a lng list f cmplaints: frm lcal smg t glbal climate change, frm …. The list wuld largely be accurate, the cncern reasnable. Yet the students wh shuld be given the highest marks wuld actually be thse wh agreed with the statement. The surprise is hw gd things are, nt hw bad.
After all, the wrld’s ppulatin has mre than tripled during this century, and wrld utput has risen hugely, s yu wuld expect the earth itself t have been affected. Indeed, if peple lived, cnsumed, and prduced things in the same way as they did in 1900 (r 1950, r indeed 1980), the wrld by nw wuld be a pretty disgusting place: smelly, dirty, txic and dangerus. But they dn’t. The reasns why they dn’t and why the envirnment has nt been ruined, have t d with prices, technlgical advances, scial change and gvernment regulatin in respnse t ppular pressure. That is why tday’s envirnmental prblems in the pr cuntries ught, in principle, t be slvable.
Raw materials have nt run ut and shw n sign f ding s. Lgically, ne day they must: the planet is a finite place. Yet it is als very big, and man is very intelligent. What has happened is that every time a material seems t be running shrt, the price has risen and, in respnse, peple have lked fr new surces f supply, tried t find ways t use less f the material, r lked fr a new substitute. Fr this reasn, prices fr energy and fr minerals have actually fallen during the century. The same is true fr fd. Prices fluctuate (波动), in respnse t harvests, natural disasters and plitical instability; and when they rise, it takes sme time befre new surces f supply becme available. But they always d, assisted by new farming and crp technlgy. The lng-term trend has been dwnwards.
It is where prices and markets d nt perate prperly that this sund trend begins t fail, and the genuine prblems arise. Markets cannt always keep the envirnment healthy. If n ne wns the resurce cncerned, n ne has an interest in cnserving it r fstering it.
    23. Accrding t the authr, mst students_________________.
    A. believe the wrld's envirnment is in an undesirable cnditin
    B. get high marks fr their gd knwledge f the wrld's envirnment
    C. agree that the envirnment f the wrld is nt as bad as it is thught t be
    D. appear smewhat uncncerned abut the state f the wrld's envirnment
    24. What des Paragraph 2 imply?
    A. The envirnment remains relatively healthy.
    B. The wrld is heavily plluted by txic and dangerus air.
    C. Envirnmental prblems in pr cuntries are nt likely t be slved.
    D. The earth are seriusly affected by grwing ppulatins and rising utput.
    25. Why have energy and mineral prices generally fallen during the century?
    A. The planet has unlimited raw materials.
    B. New surces and substitutes are fund.
    C. Gvernment regulated prices heavily.
    D. Demand fr these materials hardly decreased.
    26. What is the primary slutin t envirnmental prblems?
    A. Limiting cnsumptin f natural resurces.
    B. Allwing market frces t functin prperly.
    C. Cntrlling the grwth f the wrld ppulatin.
    D. Sharing the wnership f resurces amng the public.

Black taxis have been a cmmn sight in Lndn fr many years. Nw these taxis and their drivers have becme the fcus f a new study int Alzheimer’s (阿尔兹海默症). Fr thse n the utside, it may seem that behind the wheel f these black taxis are just cmmn peple wh help mve us t ur places. But hidden within their brains is a map f Lndn’s streets that has put GPS technlgy t shame fr many years.
“The Knwledge”, a test fr Lndn’s taxi drivers, stands amng the hardest tests ne culd ever experience. University Cllege Lndn and Alzheimer’s Research UK are cming tgether t study these taxi drivers’ brains. And the taxi drivers’ hippcampi cntinue t grw as they g n ding the jb fr mre years. This suggests that perhaps there’s smething we can d t reprduce the influence n the general ppulatin.
Lead researcher Hug Spiers was part f the team which 20 years ag fund that, like birds’, the taxi drivers’ hippcampi slwly gt bigger. In fact, research has fund fr years that any animal that requires detailed spatial knwledge f their land experiences grwth in the hippcampus.
Spiers’ team hpes t deal with Alzheimer’s by studying the taxi drivers’ brains, since the hippcampus becmes smaller with the develpment f Alzheimer’s. T cllect mre infrmatin, Spiers has asked thirty Lndn’s taxi drivers cnnected t an MRI machine t drive arund. The machine will allw the researchers t keep a real-time watch n the wrkings f the hippcampus. “It’s been a jy t help scientists fight the disease,” said taxi driver Rbert Lrdan.
    27. What can we learn abut “The Knwledge”?
    A. It lasts fr a few minutes nly.
    B. It invites sme residents t be testers.
    C. It is a great challenge t peple’s memry.
    D. It includes minimal infrmatin n Lndn’s streets.
    28. What has been fund abut the taxi drivers’ hippcampi?
    A. They are imprved thanks t daily talks.
    B. They grw during the taxi drivers’ careers.
    C. They fail t cntrl shrt-term memry.
    D. They are mre likely t be influenced by Alzheimer’s.
    29. What des the research n animals shw?
    A. Their hippcampi shrink with age.
    B. Their hippcampi are different frm humans’.
    C. They navigate arund like taxi drivers.
    D. Spatial knwledge enlarges their hippcampi.
    30. What is the passage mainly abut?
    A. The histry f black taxis and drivers.
    B. The effects f the hippcampus n spatial memry.
    C. A study n taxi drivers’ brains and Alzheimer’s.
