As a yung girl grwing up in France, Sarah Tumi dreamed f becming a leader wh culd make the wrld a better place. Her passin t help thers was awakened when, frm the age f nine, she accmpanied her Tunisian father t his birthplace in the east f the cuntry during hlidays. There she rganized hmewrk clubs and activities fr children.
Tumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect f desertificatin (沙漠化). “Within 10 years rich farmers became wrse ff, and in 10 years frm nw they will be pr. I wanted t stp the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity f drughts have led t an estimated 75 percent f Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertificatin.
Tumi recgnized that farming practices needed t change. She is cnfident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able t adapt by planting sustainable crps, using new technlgies fr water treatment and fcusing n natural prducts and fertilizers rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Tumi cnslidated (巩固) her dream f fighting the desert. She mved t Tunisia, and set up a prgramme named Acacias fr All t put her sustainable farming philsphy (理念) int actin. “I want t shw yung peple in rural areas that they can create pprtunities where they are. Nbdy is better able t understand the impact f desertificatin and climate change than smebdy wh is living with n access t water.”
By September 2016, mre than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted n 20 pilt farms, with farmers recrding a 60 percent survival rate. Tumi estimates that sme 3 millin acacia trees are needed t prtect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects t plant 1 millin trees by 2018. In the next cuple f years, Tumi hpes t extend the prgramme t Algeria and Mrcc.

With a brain the size f a pinhead, insects pssess a great sense f directin. They manage t lcate themselves and mve thrugh small penings. Hw d they d this with their limited brain pwer? Understanding the inner wrkings f an insect’s brain can help us in ur search twards energy-efficient cmputing, physicist Elisabetta Chicca f the University f Grningen shws with her mst recent result: a rbt that acts like an insect.
It’s nt easy t make use f the images that cme in thrugh yur eyes when deciding what yur feet r wings shuld d. A key aspect here is the apparent mtin f things as yu mve. “Like when yu're n a train,” Chicca explains. “The trees nearby appear t mve faster than the huses far away.” Insects use this infrmatin t infer hw far away things are. This wrks well when mving in a straight line, but reality is nt that simple. T keep things manageable fr their limited brain pwer, they adjust their behaviur: they fly in a straight line, make a turn, then make anther straight line.
In search f the neural mechanism (神经机制) that drives insect behaviur, PhD student Thrben Schepe develped a mdel f its neurnal activity and a small rbt that uses this mdel t find the psitin. His mdel is based n ne main principle: always head twards the area with the least apparent mtin. He had his rbt drive thrugh a lng passage cnsisting f tw walls and the rbt centred in the middle f the passage, as insects tend t d. In ther virtual envirnments, such as a space with small penings, his mdel als shwed similar behaviur t insects.
The fact that a rbt can find its psitin in a realistic envirnment is nt new. Rather, the mdel gives insight int hw insects d the jb, and hw they manage t d things s efficiently. In a similar way, yu culd make cmputers mre efficient.
In the future, Chicca hpes t apply this specific insect behaviur t a chip as well. “Instead f using a general-purpse cmputer with all its pssibilities, yu can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that des the jb, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient.” She cmments.
8. Why is “a train” mentined in Paragraph 2?
A. T illustrate the principle f train mtin.B. T highlight why human visin is limited.
C. T explain hw insects perceive distances.D. T cmpare the mvement f trees and huses.
9. What des Paragraph 3 mainly talk abut cncerning Schepe’s mdel?
A. Its nvel design.B. Its theretical basis.
C. Its pssible applicatin.D. Its wrking mechanism.
10. What d the researchers think f the finding?
A. Amusing.B. Discuraging.C. Prmising.D. Cntradictry.
11. What will Chicca’s fllw-up study fcus n?
A. Inventing insect-like chips.B. Studying general-purpse rbts.
C. Creating insect-inspired cmputers.D. Develping energy-efficient hardware.

While stress is an unavidable aspect f life, studies cntinue t shw t much stress can have a bad impact n bth health and well- being. Mre specifically, excess stress can lead t high bld pressure, increasing heart disease risk. With all that in mind, researchers frm the Universities f Maynth and Limerick set ut t better understand hw reactins t stressful events impact ur future health, as well as if there are any factrs that can play key stress- buffering (缓解压力) rles.
The research team suggests that previus research has shwn that gratitude and affect- balance (balance f psitive t negative emtins) play key stress- buffering rles. Hwever, up until nw there have been few studies examining the impact f these variables n cardivascular (心血管) recvery frm severe psychlgical stress. Researchers chse t fcus n this cnsideratin, as well as whether r nt affect- balance mderates the relatinship between gratitude and cardivascular reactins t severe psychlgical stress.
The actual research prtin f this prject tk place at Maynth University and invlved a ttal f 68 undergrad students (24 men, 44 wmen) between the ages f 18 and 57. The experiment featured lab tasks which caused stress amng the participants, while researchers measured cardivascular reactivity and recvery in respnse t the stress.
The ensuing results reveal that a state f gratitude predicts lwer systlic (收缩的) bld pressure respnses thrughut the stress- testing perid. This means, researchers say, that gratitude prmtes a unique stress- buffering effect n bth reactins t and recvery frm severe psychlgical stress. The team als fund that affect- balance increases the effects f grateful feelings.
In cnclusin, researchers believe these findings hld clinical (临床的) usefulness. There are many lw- cst ways t develp grateful feelings that can help prmte imprved well- being. Fr instance, ne earlier study fund cardiac patients wh make use f gratitude jurnals have better cardivascular utcmes than thse wh d nt. Thse earlier prjects, in cmbinatin with these latest findings, strngly suggest that gratitude is a useful tl in the fight against stress and pr cardivascular health.
12. What may high bld pressure result in accrding t paragraph 1?
A. A headache.B. A sleep disrder.
C. Heart disease.D. Difficult breathing.
13. Hw might the participants feel abut the lab tasks?
A. Mved.B. Thankful.C. Disappinted.D. Anxius.
14. Why des the authr give the example in the last paragraph?
A. T shw gratitude is easy t practice.
B. T suggest we shuld learn mre ways t relieve stress.
C. T explain why the findings are meaningful.
D. T shw hspitals shuld use mre treatment ways.
15. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The appraches t cping with stress.
B. The cnnectin between stress and heart disease.
C. The benefits f being thankful.
D. The cnnectin between gratitude and stress relief.
