    When Caster Pettway, 67, was a girl, there were always quilts (被子) arund. They were n the beds and sfas in her huse. Smetimes, her mther wuld hang a quilt utside t shw it ff t the neighbrs. She always seemed t be making a new ne. “And everybdy in every huse did the same thing,” Pettway says.
    Pettway grew up in the 1960s in Gee’s Bend, Alabama, a tiny cmmunity n the Alabama River. Nw, it is seen as the birthplace f an imprtant art frm.
    Wmen in Gee’s Bend tk up quilting smetime in the 1800s. They made quilts ut f necessity: They needed them t keep warm. They didn’t have prper fabric (织物), s they cut up ld clthing and sewed the pieces tgether. They didn’t use designs seen in traditinal quilts. They cut their fabric int large, ften irregular (不规则的) shapes. Their large, beautiful quilts were unlike any thers in the wrld.
