Tp scientists have emphasized the imprtance f frest carbn sinks as having an irreplaceable rle in reducing carbn in the atmsphere and ultimately cmbating climate change.
Yin Weilun, an academician f the Chinese Academy f Engineering and frmer principal f Beijing Frestry University, said that frests and grasslands hld a unique psitin in cmbating glbal climate change.
Frest carbn sinks are plants that absrb carbn dixide frm the atmsphere and fix it in vegetatin r sil, thereby reducing cncentratin f the gas, Yin said.
Speaking n Tuesday at the Frestry and Grassland Carbn Sink Innvatin Internatinal Frum, which is running parallel t the Zhngguancun Frum held in Beijing frm Thursday t Tuesday, the scientist said that gd frest management can increase carbn absrptin capability.
Yin called fr mre research in frest management t ensure the sustainability f frests and their carbn sink capacity.
“The grwth and develpment cycle f each tree species is different. Fr example, pplars (白杨木) reach their peak height in abut 20 years. After that, they are unlikely t grw and the tree tp will rt away.”
T use land efficiently, frest managers must cut dwn sme rtten trees and replace them with yung nes s that the frest system can maintain its ability t reprduce and act as a carbn sink, he said.
Yin als stressed the need fr increasing frest reserves, grasslands and wetlands t enhance their ability t absrb carbn.
At the frum, Du Xiangwan, frmer deputy head f the Chinese Academy f Engineering, said frests and grasslands can make multiple cntributins t climate change mitigatin as each cubic meter f wd grwth can absrb an average f 1.83 metric tns f carbn dixide, he said.
In additin, affrestatin, grassland and wetland restratin, and desertificatin cntrl nt nly prtect bidiversity but als prvide slutins fr climate change adaptatin and mitigatin, he added.
Last year, the Natinal Frestry and Grassland Administratin set up a carbn sink research institute t study the cuntry’s ptential fr carbn sinks thrugh frests and grasslands.
This research wrk will assess the spatial distributin f carbn sinks with the aim f understanding hw t increase them, the administratin said.
    1. Hw des frest carbn sink functin ?
    A. By reducing carbn in the sky.B. By absrbing carbn dixide frm the atmsphere.
    C. By absrbing carbn dixide in vegetatin r sil.D. By reducing the spread f the gases
    2. Gd frest management is s imprtant because .
    A. it can prevent tree cut.B. it can ensure land availability.
    C. it can maintain frest reprductin.D. it can increase carbn absrptin capability.
    3. It can be inferred frm the passage that .
    A. Frest carbn sinks can never be replaced in cmbating climate change.
    B. If necessary, sme trees must be cut dwn fr the yung grwth.
C The climate change is underging the wrst situatin in China.
    D. Mre researches are needed t d fr the frest management.

As a kid, I ften gt nsebleeds. My parents blamed all the fruits I ate that gave me “excessive heat”— especially the manges, my favrite. It didn’t stp me frm wlfing them dwn by the dzens.
As I’ve grwn lder, my fixatin n extic (奇异的) fruit has intensified — the weirder, the better. The disadvantage f being an armchair pmlgist (果树栽培学家) in Canada is that mst f ur fresh fruit is imprted. The silver lining is that almst everything in my lcal stres qualifies as extic and interesting. Trying a new fruit expands my understanding f the wrld and enriches my experience within it. “What lasted is what the sul ate,” Jack Gilbert nce wrte, “The way a child knws the wrld by putting part by part int his muth.” I think f these lines when I prepare t eat a new fruit. Each tasting is a chance t be reunited with my inner child, t be wide-eyed and wrdless as I get t knw it.
Thse tasked with naming these fruits appear t be equally under a spell, prducing names as simplistic as they are charming. Cttn candy grapes. Ice cream bean. Dragnfruit.
Mst fruits I try nly a cuple f times, but there’s ne I keep returning t: the sursp. At ideal ripeness, the sursp tastes like the ideal trpical fruit. Wait just a day, thugh, and it smells mre like feet than fruit. This rapid rt cmfrts me, incredibly. Watching a belved fruit transfrm frm unripe ne t sticky flesh feels like witnessing an act f living. The plant sacrifices fruit in hpes f spreading its seed; life was always the pint. An appraching expiratin date is nly encuragement t enjy these accessible jys as they cme. We, t, will sn find ur bdies sftened and bruised. Will we have let ur sweetest days g t waste?
    4. Why des the authr like extic fruit?
    A. She is a famus pmlgist.B. It helps braden her hrizns.
    C. It reminds her f her hmetwn.D. She nly likes strange-lking fruit.
    5. What des the authr think f the fruit names in Paragraph 3?
    A. Funny.B. Useful.C. Appealing.D. Pwerful.
    6. What des the authr imply in the last paragraph?
    A. Never judge a bk by its cver.
    B. Time and tide wait fr n man.
    C. An apple a day keeps the dctr away.
    D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
    7. What’s this text mainly abut?
    A. Benefits f eating fresh fruit.
    B. Memries f the carefree childhd.
    C. Explratins f the natural wrld.
    D. Experiences f trying extic fruit.
    C
Lng-term expsure t lw-frequency nise can cause many health prblems, but the slutin may be fund in an unexpected bject, a ping-png ball. Cnventinally thught f as the plastic balls that speed thrugh the air during a fast-speed game f table tennis, with a few changes, ping-png balls can help absrb the city nise.
Lw-frequency nise is everywhere in cities, near rads, and by airprts. Thugh ptentially heard as backgrund in the acustic (声学的) landscape, it can lead t earaches, breathing prblems and ther lng-term harmful effects. Because it is prduced by a range f surces and is less affected by structures than higher-frequency sund, lw-frequency nise can be challenging t avid.
In Jurnal f Applied Physics, researchers frm the University f Lille and the Natinal Technical University f Athens describe an acustic metasurface (超表面) that uses ping-png balls t prevent sund passing thrugh.
“Ping-png balls are well-knwn, everyday bjects, present in large numbers all ver the wrld,” said authr Rbine Sabat. “Our mtivatin was t use these easily accessible bjects t create a lw-frequency sundprf panel structure. Ping-png balls therefre present a suitable alternative t sund insulatrs.”
Acustic metasurfaces are materials specially engineered t handle sund waves. This metasurface uses ping-png balls with small hles, acting as Helmhltz resnatrs (共振器). Mre resnant frequencies meant the device was able t absrb mre sund. At the success f tw cupled resnatrs, the researchers added mre, until their device lked like a square sheet f ping-png balls cvered with hles, multiplying the number f resnant frequencies that culd be absrbed.
By adjusting the number f balls, number f hles, and hle sizes, the researchers culd change the metasurface’s acustic prperties, prving it is pssible t design a sund absrptin panel withut expensive materials.
“The ptential f this metasurface extends beynd sund absrptin,” said Sabat. “It can be bradened t achieve varius functins similar t ther metasurfaces. These functinalities include sund fcusing, uncnventinal sund reflectin and mre.”
8 What makes lw-frequency nise hard t avid?
    A. Its dull backgrund.B. Its cvering range.
    C. Its varius surces.D. Its surrunding structures.
    9. What des the underlined wrd “insulatrs” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
    A. Surces.B. Levels.C. Effects.D. Barriers.
    10. What is an advantage f the newly develped metasurface?
    A. It csts little t make.B. It has light weight.
    C. It is cnvenient t use.D. It is envirnmentally friendly.
    11. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Lw-frequency Nise Can Cause Diseases
    B. Ping-png Balls Functin Well as Sund Absrbers
    C. Acustic Metasurface Can Address Nise Prblem
    D. Ping-png Balls Shw Ptential in Many Research Fields
    D
As e-cigarettes becme mre ppular, fewer peple are taking up smking traditinal cigarettes. But can e-cigarettes, an electrnic nictine delivery system, help peple quit smking altgether? The answer is prbably yes. A study led by Matthew Carpenter, a prfessr at the Medical University f Suth Carlina fund that e-smkers tend t smke less and have increased quit attempts.
In the pilt study, Carpenter evaluated e-cigarettes in terms f usage, prduct preference, changes in smking behavirs and nictine expsure. Ninety subjects were evaluated:45 were randmized t use e-cigarettes, and 45 were randmized t a cntrl grup. Everyne was fllwed ver a perid f fur mnths. The study was published in Cancer Epidemilgy in Nvember and is ne f the few randmized studies in the U. S. t examine the effects f e-cigarettes.
Results shwed that when smkers were given e-cigarettes, uptake was strng. Many participants rated the e-cigarettes similar t their usual prduct, suggesting that e-cigarettes might give smkers a suitable alternative t cmbustible(燃烧的)cigarettes. E-cigarettes ffer significantly less expsure t harmful txicants and therefre are safer. Peple using e-cigarettes thrughut the study smked an average f 37 percent fewer cigarettes, as cmpared t thse in the cntrl grup, shwing a psitive effect when making the switch and ptentially serving as a tl t help smkers quit.
That's gd news fr Carpenter and his clleagues. Smking is the leading cause f cancer and has a negative impact n the effectiveness f cancer treatments. Peple wh quit smking regardless f their ages, have substantial gains in life expectancy(预期寿命)cmpared with thse wh cntinue t smke.
Carpenter cautins that while e-cigarettes may help peple smke less r even quit, they are nt fr everyne. "It is imprtant t prtect nn-smkers, particularly adlescents, frm starting any nictine-cntaining prduct. "
Mre than 1,500 varieties f e-cigarettes are nw available, including different lks, high-tech pwer settings and many flavrs. All these make them mre appealing t kids. In fact, e-cigarettes are mre ppular than cnventinal cigarettes amng yuth. "All these shuld raise ur alarm bells," he said.
E-cigarettes were nly recently regulated by the Fd and Drug Administratin. Largely manufactured verseas, the quality cntrl prcess varies, he says. Withut enugh infrmatin t answer the lng-term public health issues f e-cigarettes, researchers like Carpenter are aware f the imprtance f further studies n the latest tbacc trends. Cmbustible cigarettes have been arund fr many decades. E-cigarettes have nt, and the science has a lt f questins left t answer, he said.
    12. Which f the fllwing is TRUE abut Prfessr Carpenter's experiment n e-cigarettes?
    A. The test grups include cnventinal smkers, e-smkers and nn-smkers.
    B. E-cigarettes expse smkers t fewer pisnus substances.
C Many participants dn't think e-cigarettes as gd as traditinal nes.
    D. It is ne f the few studies t test the effects f smking.
