Fr peple wh aren't fans f winter, animals that hibernate seem t have the right idea: It's the same f sleeping all day lng withut eating until spring cmes—isn't it? Nt exactly.
"Mst f the physilgical functins(生理机能) are greatly slwed dwn," says Marina Blanc, a prfessr at the Duke Lemur(狐猴)Center in Nrth Carlina. Fr example, when lemurs hibernate, they reduce their heart rates frm ver 300 beats per minute t fewer than six, says Blanc. And instead f breathing abut every secnd, they can g up t 10 minutes withut taking a breath. Their brain activity "becmes undetectable(难以检测的)." This is very different frm sleep, which is gentle resting situatin where uncnscius functins are still wrking.
Put simply: "Hibernatin is a way f energy saving," says Kelly Drew, wh studies the brain chemistry f hibernating Arctic grund squirrel at the University f Alaska Fairbanks. While hibernatin is ften seen as a seasnal behavir, it's nt nly fr cld-weather animals. There are trpical hibernatrs that may d s t beat the heat. And "sme animals hibernate because f fd shrtages," says Drew. Fr example, echidnas(针鼹)in Australia will hibernate after fires, waiting until they can get enugh fd fr nrmal activities.
T slw their metablism(新陈代谢), animals cl their bdies by 5 t 10℃ n average. The Arctic grund squirrels can take this much further. Drew's research has shwn that cling is likely cntrlled by levels f adensine(腺苷)in the brain. Nt nly des adensine increase in winter in grund squirrels, the receptrs fr the mlecule becme mre sensitive t it.
But animals dn't always stay in their cld, sleeping state while hibernating. Abut 80 percent f their energy is spent intermittently(间歇地)waking and warming up. Why they d this is "ne f the greatest mysteries" f the field. Sme think they need t turn back n their immune systems(免疫系统) t fight disease, while thers think they may simply awaken s they can sleep.
One bird, sme insects and many ther kinds f animals like frgs and snakes als have hibernatin-like states. When it cmes t mammals, bears might be the first that cme t mind. Mst mammalian hibernatrs are smaller. "The average hibernatr weighs nly 70 grams," says Drew. That's because little bdies have high surface area t vlume ratis, making it mre difficult fr them t stay warm in cld weather— they need the seasnal energy savings mre than larger animals.
38. Hw des the writer tell the difference between hibernatin and sleep?
A . By shwing facts. B . By explaining meanings. C . By intrducing arguments. D . By cmparing numbers.
39. "Echidnas" in Paragraph 3 is mentined t shw that hibernatin____.
A . can help animals cl their bdies B . is always fr cld-weather animals C . helps fight against fd shrtage D . is thught t be a seasnal behavir
40. The last paragraph is mainly abut____.
A . when certain animals hibernate B . what kinds f animals hibernate C . why sme animals hibernate D . hw animals hibernate
41. We can learn frm the passage that____
A . It is harder fr smaller animals t keep warm in winter. B . The cling f bdies may influence the levels f adensine. C . Scientists dn't agree n the reasns f intermittent hibernatin. D . Bdy functins are still uncnsciusly wrking during hibernatin.
