Haili Smith, a 16-year-ld girl, says she and her 13-year-ld sister Brke have very different tastes in bks. But they share the belief that kids are mre willing t read if they relate t a bk’s characters. That’s why, in 2020, they started Bks Like Me. The vlunteer grup prvided teachers with culturally diverse(不同的) children’s bks.
“We didn’t really like reading a few years ag,” Haili said. “Then we started t lk fr bks that had characters we saw urselves in. It made us want t read mre. We thught we culd share that with students.”
S far, Haili and Brke have given away mre than 16,000 bks. Educatrs say it’s imprtant fr students t read children’s bks with diverse characters. A bk can be a mirrr, letting kids see them reflected in its characters. Or it can be a windw, helping kids see frm the eye f characters with backgrunds and experiences different frm their wn.
Anitra teaches the furth grade at Lckhart Elementary Magnet Schl, in Flrida. She says dnatins frm Bks Like Me have gtten her students excited abut reading. “There’s s much that we can learn when we read abut ther cultures,” she says.
Over the years, Haili and Brke have been invited t speak with educatrs abut the imprtance f culturally diverse bks. They’ve als taken bks directly t students. At a bk fair in Flrida, students all lked happy and interested when they fund the diverse children’s bks.
