The Rman Clsseum is a giant amphitheater built tw thusand years ag. Despite its age and an earthquake that kncked dwn its suth side, mst f the 150-sme-ft building is still standing. Like many ancient Rman structures, parts f it were cnstructed using a specific type f cncrete. Scientists and engineers have lng suspected the key t these buildings’ strength is their use f this Rman cncrete. But exactly hw this strng cncrete has cntributed t the architecture’s durability(耐用) has been a mystery t researchers wrldwide.
A team f interdisciplinary(跨学科的) researchers recently discvered a ptential answer t why these ancient Rman buildings have been able t weather the test f time while many mdern, cncrete structures seem t cllapse after a few decades. The answer: self-healing cncrete. The material has three cmpnents: limestne. vlcanic material and water. Fr years, architects and histrians have guessed the vlcanic material is what makes it strng — which it des. But it des nt explain the material’s self-healing ability.
What the researchers fund was that the self-healing prperties might simply be a result f chemistry. The limestne in the cncrete is likely the secret. When the ancient Rmans made mrtar(砂浆), they heated up the lime t turn it int a substance called “ quicklime” — a very reactive chemical sibling t limestne. And, because they intrduced water t the quickli me during mixing, the heat it prduced set up a chemical fundatin that culd strengthen the cncrete later. When tiny cracks start t frm later, the quicklime stps them frm becming bigger. When it rains, the lime quickly fills the crack r reacts with the vlcanic ash t“heal”the material.
Fr materials scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding f ancient Rman cn crete is a welcme discvery. “This is ne way that the material can be greener,” says Ramirez.“It’s srt f like a message in a bttle. The Rmans made the material. We had t kind f figure ut hw they did it s that we can make better materials — and then in turn, attend t ur envirnment better.”
28. Why is the Rman Clsseum mentined in paragraph 1?
A. T shw many wnderful ancient Rman structures.
B. T prvide a clue fr studying ancient Rman structures.
C. T disclse t the wrld the mystery f ancient Rman structures.
D. T start the intrductin f the durability f ancient Rman structures.
29. What des the underlined wrd “weather” in paragraph 2mean?
A. Change. B. Prve. C. Stand. D. Suffer
30. What might accunt fr the architecture’ s self-healing ability?
A. A material called quicklime. B. A chemical fundatin.
C. The vlcanic material. D. The water in the crack.
31. What is implied in Ainissa Ramirez’s wrds?
A. Rman cncrete was made like a message in a bttle.
B. Rman cncrete was aimed at prtecting the envirnment.
C. Further study f Rman material will be carried ut sn.
D. The way t make Rman material can be practical nwadays.

S far, use f underwater cameras has been limited.. Sme must be stuck t pwer wires. Others rely n batteries, which dn’t tend t last lng. Such limits have kept scientists frm explring mst f the cean wrld. But nw researchers have fund a way arund these prblems — underwater cameras can get a new pwer surce frm sund.
The camera has tw sensrs n the bttm. Each is made f multiple layers f a piezelectric material. When sund travels thrugh the water, it creates waves f pressure, which cause the material t vibrate (振动). And the material changes these vibratins int electrical energy and stres it in a capacitr. Once the capacitr has enugh energy, it turns n the camera and takes a picture. Then, it lets the secnd sensr tap int mre sund energy t send the picture. In this way, the sensrs nt nly pwer the camera, but bradcast the data carrying its images.
Any sund can pwer it — frm swimming fish t a passing ship. One f the sensrs can fcus n cllecting energy fr the camera while the ther fcuses n cmmunicatin. Hw quickly the system takes t recharge depends n hw lud and clse the sund is. In a quiet setting, the camera will take abut 10 t 12 secnds. With imprved sensrs, the camera will charge in less than a secnd by using sunds frm mre than 100 meters away.
T recrd an image, the camera flashes a series f red, blue and green lights. The system then cmbines what it sees int a single clr pht. T cmmunicate, the camera has an internal switch, which cntrls whether a sensr uses incming sund fr bradcasting. That switch is like a mirrr being mved int and ut f psitin. When that switch is in psitin, the system will use sme sund t carry the pht’s digital data t a receiver. That receiver picks up the camera’s bradcast and assembles the data int an image. And then the undersea pht sht is dne.
32. Where is the electrical energy kept?
A. In a sensr. B. In a capacitr. C. In a switch. D. In a receiver.
33. Which f the fllwing determines the time t recharge the system?
A. The quality and surce f a sund.
B. The flexibility f the sensrs.
C. The quiet setting f a sund.
D. The ludness and lcatin f a sund.
34. What is mainly stressed in the last paragraph?
A. Hw different clrs are cmbined.
B. Hw sensrs cmmunicate thrugh images.
C. Hw the undersea camera wrks.
D. Hw the new system uses sunds.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Cllecting Pwer frm Varius Creatures
B. Develping a New Camera thrugh Sunds
C. Pwering a New Camera with Ocean Sunds
D. Prviding New Functins fr a New Camera
