Fr many mnths after skin cancer surgery, which included remving a large part f her nse, Linda Pitcher culdn’t leave the huse. She avided answering the frnt dr, and if she had t g int her lcal village, she wre a hat and pulled it lw, afraid f interacting with thers.
Desperate fr a way ut, Pitcher received psychlgical treatment. “What d yu miss?” her dctr asked. “Drawing n lcatin,” Pitcher replied. She wrked hard at schl when she was yung but never gt satisfying results, which upset her. Hwever, she always gravitated t drawing.
At 58, encuraged by her dctr, Pitcher studied fr a degree in cntemprary design crafts at Herefrd Cllege f Arts. She was ging t becme a printer initially but ended up cheerfully saying, “There’s smething special abut ceramics (陶瓷). I culd see a path ahead, which I never thught I wuld attain.” And she gt a degree!
Pitcher lves the ceramic. “It’s having the resilience (韧性) because when things g wrng when yu’re thrwing, yu have t rethrw r the pts will stress-crack (应力破裂). It’s like me,” she says. “Yu keep ging. Exactly the same every day. Yu lift yur head up and g.”
Pitcher’s fcus is n drawing n the ceramic in a way that peple can see the drawing. This is the prblem Pitcher wrks thrugh, ut n lcatin, in Herefrd, Lndn r Bath, while strangers stp t chat. “Peple give their life stries. Yu are n lnger the fcus. As yu draw, yu’re listening. Yu catch the speed f it,” she says.
Nw, at 61, Pitcher still finds “every day a struggle”, but smething has changed. “Nw, when I talk, I lk at peple. And I frget I’m ding it,” says Pitcher, wh is taking part in her first ceramics exhibitin. “I will lk visitrs in the eye. Thugh nervus, I’m ging,” she says. “Ceramics has reminded me f my wrth, mtivatin and cnfidence. It has given me my life back.”

Grabbing a meal with a friend is better than dining alne — and killer whales agree. The whales prefer t hunt fr herring in pairs, researchers reprt in Current Bilgy.
Every winter, a huge number f herring swim t Nrwegian waters t reprduce, attracting grups f killer whales eager fr a generus meal. T catch these lng silver-clred fish, the whales slap (拍打) the creatures with their tails t knck them ut.
In the new study, zlgist and eclgist Pal Dmenici and his c-wrkers fllwed 26 killer whales using camera-equipped drnes (无人机). Larger, prbably lder, killer whales tend t pair up with smaller, yunger nes t hunt, the team fund. As a pair prepares t attack, the larger whale — the striker — mves its bdy tward its smaller partner — the helper — wh stays, n average, abut ne-and-a-half bdy lengths away and acts as a barrier t fish trying t swim away. This frmatin helps the tw maximize the catch, which they then share.
“Scientists have suspected that killer whale ppulatins ften have specific hunting rles, but there has been little data t back that up,” says eclgist Jared Twers, wh was nt invlved in the new study. “This study nw prves that. Plus, the use f drnes is excellent as it desn’t disturb the ecsystem.”
Dmenici’s team fund that the striker and the helper maintain a fairly precise pattern while hunting. “During the tail slap, the tw meet at a rughly 40-degree angle, n average, each with their bdy turned abut 70 degrees relative t the ther, frming a ‘V’ that pints t the fish. The level f cperatin is similar t what can be seen in team sprts,” Dmenici says. “They have t be very cperative and well psitined t scre.”
These killer whales hunt near the castline and in very shallw waters, abut 5 meters deep. “That’s an area that may be subject t human-related disturbances,” Dmenici says. “Understanding hw these killer whales hunt when there is minimal interventin culd help scientists ntice when disturbances, such as bats r ther human activities, affect their feeding behavir. We need t knw what the regular behavir is in rder t be able t prtect them.”
      8. What rle des the yung whale play during the hunting task?
      A. It fllws clsely behind the striker.B. It decides hw t share the final catch.
      C. It tries t stp target fish frm escaping.D. It acts as a barrier t ther larger whales.
      9. What des Jared Twers say abut the new study?
      A. It leads t technlgical advances.B. It damages a balanced ecsystem.
      C. It receives criticism frm scientists.D. It cnfirms a previus assumptin.
      10. What des the wrd “scre” underlined in paragraph 5 actually mean?
      A. Beat an rganized sprts team.B. Achieve success in hunting.
      C. Keep a recrd f a number f fish.D. Maintain a cperative relatinship.
      11. What can be learned abut killer whales frm the last paragraph?
      A. Their feeding behavir is hard t ntice.
      B. Human disturbances seldm affect them.
      C. Hunting near the cast carries certain risks.
      D. They are expected t hunt smewhere else.
      D
Grwing up in Argentina and Brazil, I lived in a culture in which ftball is mre than a sprt — it’s a natinal passin and a surce f cllective identity. As a scientist, I’m impressed by hw cuntries with limited resurces have cnsistently prduced wrld-class players. The key is the availability f pprtunity. Everywhere, yu can find sprts fields, and netwrks f caches help t identify and train sprts talents. Shuldn’t we d the same fr science?
Every persn with a curius mind — regardless f gender, gegraphy r sciecnmic status — shuld have a real chance f becming a scientist. Science benefits human beings by addressing the wrld’s envirnmental, health, technlgical and scial challenges. It shuld be widely seen as a career t lng fr and a surce f pride fr families and cmmunities.
Building scientific capacity in the Glbal Suth (ften referring t sme cuntries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Oceania) is crucial. But thse wh d becme scientists will face numerus barriers: insufficient facilities, limited funding and exclusin frm internatinal scientific discussins.
Sme effrts are already underway. I witness hw scientific excellence can shine if given the pprtunity. With even mdest investments, scientists can establish labratries, develp technlgies, advance public health, drive climate adaptatin and push research bundaries. In Dakar, Senegal, physicist Balla Dip Ngm at Cheikh Anta Dip University makes batteries frm peanut shells, and virlgist (病毒学家) Ndeye Sakha Bb at the Pasteur Institute’s lcal branch is wrking twards much-needed rapid diagnstic (诊断) tests fr dengue, a viral disease.
But t build a truly glbal scientific ecsystem, there’s still mre wrk t d. First, sciety at large must prtect academic freedm and the institutins that sustain science. It’s als crucial t encurage the scientists wh receive supprt t g n t run institutins and instruct new generatins f scientists. And natins must advcate scientific cperatin t address shared challenges and build internatinal relatinships.
Prviding pprtunities fr scientists in the Glbal Suth is nt an act f charity. It is a strategic, frward-lking respnse t a mre cmplex and demanding future. By fully unearthing human ptential, we equip urselves t face the future tgether.
      12. Why des the authr talk abut ftball in paragraph 1?
      A. T make a pint n science.B. T highlight scientists’ pride.
      C. T reveal the histry f sprts.D. T define the cre f a cuntry.
      13. Hw des the authr supprt his pinin in paragraph 4?
      A. By making cmparisns.B. By prviding examples.
      C. By telling his persnal stries.D. By referring t experts’ qutes.
      14. What is the authr’s view n a truly glbal scientific ecsystem?
      A. It is the pririty f charity wrk.B. It is far frm pssible t build ne.
      C. Rich cuntries hld leading rles.D. Mre effrts shuld be made fr it.
      15. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. Similarities between mdern science and sprts.
      B. Challenges facing new generatins f scientists.
      C. Shaping a mre cmplex and demanding future.
      D. Building scientific capacity in the Glbal Suth.
